Beautiful Field Farm

80%
(5)
63km from French River Provincial Park · 2 sites · Tents, RVs · Naughton, ON
Welcome to Beautiful Field Farm, our family-run orchard and homestead tucked into the quiet forests of Naughton, Ontario. This is more than just a place to camp — it’s a chance to slow down, breathe fresh air, and reconnect with nature in a peaceful farm setting. We’ve created a mix of secluded forest tent clearings and private RV pads, each surrounded by trees for privacy and space. This is primitive, off-grid camping — no hookups, no running water, and no electricity — just the essentials and the stars overhead. For your comfort, we’ve built a brand-new farm outhouse, kept clean and simple. Our guests love to spend time at the farm’s private pond, a half-acre oasis tucked at the back of the property. There are multiple hammocks set up around the water, perfect for reading, napping, or watching the dragonflies dance across the surface. On warm days, bring your chair or blanket and relax by the pond’s edge, or wander the orchard trails and forest paths that weave across the land. In season, you’ll find life on the farm buzzing with energy — fruit trees heavy with apples, bees working the blossoms, and cider pressing in the fall. We often have farm-fresh produce, firewood bundles, and local treats available for guests to purchase, so you can enjoy true farm-to-table experiences right on site. At night, the property comes alive in its own way: clear, dark skies for stargazing, the crackle of campfires in the distance, and the soft rustle of the forest. Whether you’re in a tent, camper, or RV, you’ll find this to be a safe, welcoming, and peaceful base for your getaway. This is simple, authentic camping — the kind that reminds you how good life feels when you unplug. Come pitch your tent, park your van, or set up your camper, and let Beautiful Field Farm be your home in the country. Life on the farm is never lonely — we share our space with a few friendly barn cats who love to wander the orchard and lounge in the sunshine. They’re curious and social, often coming by to say hello to campers. We also keep a lively chicken coop on the farm. Expect to hear the roosters crowing at sunrise — a true country alarm clock! The hens roam and cluck nearby, adding to the authentic farm atmosphere.

Cranberry Camp

92%
(6)
43km from French River Provincial Park · 3 sites · Tents, RVs · Pointe Au Baril Station, ON
Cranberry Camp is located 6 kms past the village of Pointe au Baril. It’s surrounded by Ontario native forest (the “bush”) and wetlands in the hinterlands of Georgian Bay. We are 3kms from Sturgeon bay Provincial Park (a nice beach!) and 3kms from the Bayfield Inlet public launch on Georgian Bay (visit the iconic pink rocks and windswept trees of Georgian Bay). We help people create healthy homes and buildings and sought fresh air and clean water to host workshops and retreats. The property has a small house, a guest lodge for retreats, 2 lovely and private recreational vehicles (a 24’ Jayco & a 27’ Cougar) as well as a tiny home. All spaces are scent-free, low VOC and no WiFi. Hipcamp sites are on hard-packed dirt/gravel on a driveway that runs parallel to the road in front of the former restaurant. There is a composting toilet. We love to host people getting away from the city or taking exploratory road trips. There is water access near here for canoes, kayaks and other boats. Our secondary highway (ON 529) is fairly quiet and decent for cycling. (It's very quietnorth of the ON529A turn-off!). In the spring and fall there is a nice trail through the woods.

The best camping in French River Provincial Park, ON guide

Overview

About

Located just off Hwy. 69, north of Parry Sound, French River Provincial Park is a revered paddling destination with its white waters and interconnecting rivers, lakes, and bays. The French River itself is the star, flowing 105 kilometres from Lake Nipissing to Georgian Bay. Its glacially sculpted waterway and boreal forests are enjoyed by both anglers out for an afternoon of fishing and hardcore paddlers who navigate white waters on multi-day excursions. Don’t have a boat? No problem. Hike the 4-kilometre Recollet Falls Trail that winds through the forest to the edge of a rumbling waterfall, or head to the visitor centre for the Voices of the River exhibit. As all the campsites are backcountry and only accessible by water, your choices will depend largely on your itinerary.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for easy access: Obstacle Island is near the main paddle route and somewhat sheltered from weather.
  • Best for scenic views: Campsite #419 is situated after the Five Mile Rapids section of the Upper French, #633 is on the north side of Pickerel Bay, and #822 is the westernmost campsite in the park.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • No reservations are required for any of the 250 backcountry campsites. They’re strictly first-come, first-served.
  • Permits are needed and can be purchased at the French River Visitor Centre or online up to two weeks in advance of your arrival date.
  • The first digit of each campsite number on the map indicates its zone, so campsite #106 is in Zone 1, campsite #723 in Zone 7, etc.
  • Designated campsites and portages are clearly signed and on the official park map, available for purchase at the visitor centre.

When to go

The park is open from May to October. The water is high in spring, attracting experienced white-water paddlers. July and August are prime times to enjoy summer weather—this is when you’ll find the most people out on the water. Keep in mind that bugs, especially black flies, tend to be worse in June and the beginning of July. September can be incredible with fewer people, cooler temperatures, and fall colours.

Know before you go

  • Otter Bay is the only public access point located within the park. All other access to the park is through private businesses or public boat launches.
  • Paddle safe. Weather and water conditions can change quickly so check often, choose a route that fits your experience level, and consider a guide.
  • Ontario’s only poisonous snake, the Massasauga rattler, inhabits this region so be aware, especially when walking through grassy areas. This non-aggressive, shy species rarely bites unless you step on it or try to pick it up.
