GET AWAY without going FAR AWAY! Feels like the middle of nowhere, but it's only 25 miles to downtown Austin and 15 miles to the charming little town of Bastrop with its eateries, shops and historic buildings. Spend quiet nights in the country listening to the coyotes howl and the owls hoot. Hike the nearby Roughs (trailhead is 2 miles away) or book a river canoe or kayak trip with one of the local outfitters. Bring the family and have a weekend event under the trees and covered shade of our Pony Pavilion! Hollis and her wonderful voice, great stories and powerful ukuleles now offer LIVE MUSIC by your very own campfire, for your private enjoyment. (See the EXTRAS category to book a $20/45 minute/weather-permitting show, or a 1-hour Ukulele lesson, or just get with Hollis when you show up at camp) Enjoy the park trails, the Happy Horse on-site Scavenger Hunt, the delightful maze of campground trails (on your bikes!) and the peace and quiet! Happy Horse Hotel is on 22 acres conveniently located between Austin and Bastrop in the Pope Bend of the Colorado River. LCRA's fabulous McKinney Roughs Nature Park is 2 miles up the road, adjacent to the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort. The camp area is 9 secluded, fenced and wooded acres laced with all-dirt flat biking and walking trails on our property. We encourage you to bring your bicycles along. The bird watching is great!

Basic Site Info:  Sites #1-6 are Deep Woods Primitive Campsites/No electric/No vehicle access, haul your gear in our camp wagons about 50 yds into the Enchanted Forest and park the vehicle up front after unloading gear. Sites #7-10 are RV/Popup/TravelTrailer/Etc Vehicle sites with electric and water hookups, also have space for a tent(s) for combined camping. Site #11 is our darling little air-conditioned and heated cabin that we've just added to our listing!  Sleeps up to 4 in a king and 2 twin beds.  Small kitchen.  Water source on porch, privy and hot water shower outside but near by.  All bedding provided, along with dishes, dining table, etc. Make a Grand Getaway to Happy Horse! We're a small, quiet, privately owned and operated, totally tidy and safe place to spend quality outdoor time alone or with family and friends.  (Please Note:  there is no water access from Happy Horse campground, you must leave the site to swim or fish, and there are several places in Bastrop, a 20 min drive away, to enjoy the water)  In business since 2001 as a camp for traveling horses and their riders who come to ride just up the road on McKinney Roughs amazing trails, we cleared some sites in our dense woods & opened up to tent & RV campers with no horses just a few years ago.  We are located between Austin and Bastrop 4 miles down a quiet dead end road, and only 2 miles from the Pope Bend Trailhead for LCRA's fabulous McKinney Roughs Nature Park and access to the Colorado River. 18 miles of glorious river and highland trails are open to horses, hikers and bicycles now.  There is even a zipline!  The park also offers several kinds of canoe/rafting/kayak guided packages that put into the Colorado river nearly right behind Happy Horse:  contact them for updates on availability.  You are encouraged to call the McKinney Roughs Nature Park office to inquire about these options.  Sorry to say, there is no private access from their site. There are also many nature exhibits up at the park's administration building, just a 6 minute drive from Happy Horse.   Give the kids a peek into the flora and fauna of the glorious river basin system that we are part of!    We offer 6 large Deep Woods private walk-in tent sites (park 50 yds away & haul your gear down wooded trails in our garden wagons!)  All campsites will accommodate 2-6 people each.  #1 and #5 can accommodate up to 10 people.  #6 will only fit 2 people.  We reserve the right to move you to a campsite more appropriate for your group size, once we see who all is coming and what their needs are. There are 4 graveled RV spots (sites #7 - #10) in camp proper with water and 30 amp electric hookups.  One site, which we call BigRigsville, has a 50amp hookup, for the really big motorhomes.  Tent campers may also book these sites if they'd like to park by their tents and have access to electricity. Fire rings, picnic tables, chairs, 3 unique outhouses and 2 enclosed open air hot water showers.   BBQ grills, a covered pavilion area, trails on site (pick dewberries from the mowed trails in the spring!) and time away from the hustle and bustle. We provide an initial supply of firewood at your campsite, but you are encouraged to either bring your own or ask Beaux to bring you a $10-15/bucket of seasoned oak.  Now we purchase wood from the Old Man Wood Lot up on Hwy 71 near here, so you don't have to make the trip!  We have many horse pens and 2 covered stalls for those traveling with horses.  We also are again offering LIVE MUSIC, now by request at your personal campfire!  Hollis, lead singer and songwriter for the Happy Horse Band, has taken up the ukulele and become a solo act (since there is no more Happy Horse Band featured in the Pony Pavilion for gathered Saturday night audiences).  She would be delighted to drive her golf cart stage to your campsite and do a properly distanced acoustic mini-show, featuring her original "adventure" music as well as some favorite old covers.  The children seem to especially enjoy whirling and dancing to Hollis's exuberant rhythms, enchanting stories and strong vocals! Be sure and arrange this in advance, please.  See the DASHBOARD EXTRAS category for more details. On site owners Hollis and Beaux are at your beck and call for whatever you might need. There are also many nature exhibits up at the park's administration building, just a 6 minute drive from Happy Horse.   Give the kids a peek into the flora and fauna of the glorious river basin system that we are part of!    We offer 6 large Deep Woods private walk-in tent sites (park 50 yds away & haul your gear down wooded trails in our garden wagons!)  All campsites will accommodate 2-6 people each.  #1 and #5 can accommodate up to 10 people.  #6 will only fit 2 people.  We reserve the right to move you to a campsite more appropriate for your group size, once we see who all is coming and what their needs are. There are 4 graveled RV spots (sites #7 - #10) in camp proper with water and 30 amp electric hookups.  One site, which we call BigRigsville, has a 50amp hookup, for the really big motorhomes.  Tent campers may also book these sites if they'd like to park by their tents and have access to electricity. We provide an initial supply of firewood at your campsite, but you are encouraged to either bring your own or ask Beaux to bring you a $10-15/bucket of seasoned oak.  Now we purchase wood from the Old Man Wood Lot up on Hwy 71 near here, so you don't have to make the trip!  We have many horse pens and 2 covered stalls for those traveling with horses.  We also are again offering LIVE MUSIC, now by request at your personal campfire!  Hollis, lead singer and songwriter for the Happy Horse Band, has taken up the ukulele and become a solo act (since there is no more Happy Horse Band featured in the Pony Pavilion for gathered Saturday night audiences).  She would be delighted to drive her golf cart stage to your campsite and do a properly distanced acoustic mini-show, featuring her original "adventure" music as well as some favorite old covers.  The children seem to especially enjoy whirling and dancing to Hollis's exuberant rhythms, enchanting stories and strong vocals! The hand-made cabin with a small porch is impeccably appointed with campy decor, a lot of cooking gear, table ware, small fridge, microwave (no stove or oven), electric skillet, inviting beds and linens, an indoor table and chairs, cozy heat and chilly AC.  The darling outdoor privy and hot-water shower are mere yards away!  There is a water source and washing bowl on the front porch for quick rinse-offs and a hot-water sink for dish-washing nearby.  The cabin has a picnic table, fire ring, couple of chairs and a BBQ grill. We have seasoned oak firewood for sale on site, so if you don't have room to bring some, we got you covered for enjoying an evening of s'mores and star-gazing at the dark skies. The Bungalow sleeps 4 with a king and 2 twin beds.  Blankets, towels, pillows and all bed linens are provided.  Cabin is a two-night minimum stay and will be empty for one night before your arrival, as per covid considerations.  Feel free to contact Hollis with any questions you might have.

The Camping Palace is our brand new custom tiny house, nestled under the trees on a shady path that leads to the tent sites, and ever so much nicer than a tent! It's insulated, air conditioned and heated, with 1 big KING bed.  There's a small refrigerator, a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, electric skillet, utensils, towels, plates, bowls, and cups. Like our other NO PETS/NO SMOKING cabin, there is NO INDOOR bathroom/running water, but the darling little outhouse is JUST around the corner from the front porch, and the outdoor hot-water shower is a short walk away. There is a washing bowl on a stand and garden hose located at the back end of the Camping Palace for quick cleanups and rinses. The view out the back window over the horse pasture and setting sun and moon is quite awesome, and the little front porch will provide you with a view through the trees of the rising moon, the pavilion with its twinkle lights and the camp meadow. When you wanna feel like you're camping, but with many of the comforts of home, we highly recommend a couple of nights in this darling 12x20ft/240sq ft Camping Palace! Outside under the trees there is a picnic table, a bbq grill and a firepit. No parking directly in front of the cabin but it's only a short 30 yard flat walk from the parking area in camp proper, and we have big handy wagons for moving your gear from your vehicle to the cabin and back again.

This is our second time here and we always have fun! Our kids didn’t stop till they find all the things in the scavenger hunt in the forest. My younger kid loved yo walk around “The Woods” as he call it. The host is superb!!!! Very helpful and checks out on us on how we are doing and got time to give stickers for the kids. Love this place so much!!!

The camping sites were spacious and the wooded area was really fun to explore, with paths crisscrossing throughout. The bathrooms and the outdoor shower were great. It's just a short distance to a trailhead leading down to the Colorado River which was a beautiful hike. A perfect rustic place to stay just half an hour from downtown Austin.

The trip was so relaxing and I loved the scenery in the early mornings. The camp house was really comfortable and had ample supplies for a welcoming camp weekend. We also took a Harmonica class with Hollis and had a blast learning from such a talented musician. Can’t wait to come again some time!

I had a really great time camping here. Traveled down from Kansas City in my camper van, and was welcomed by both Beaux and Hollis, who were incredibly nice, and accommodating people. They made sure to give me a tour of the campsite, and gave me a list of items to discover in a scavenger hunt through their very well-cared for forest walk, which was full of wildlife and beautiful scenery. As a musician coming through for some rest, and inspiration.. I found The Happy Horse to fit my needs perfectly. This place is truly a gem. I do not even know where to start... Amazing! Peaceful! Perfect! The grounds are beautiful and the hosts are tentative, knowledgeable, and great conversationalist! Chairs, lights, firewood, picnic table, fire ring. Hollis came by right before sunset and turned on all my christmas lights for me. She let me know there would be a late check in as well, as not to spook me when they arrived since I was alone. Bathrooms were all well kept and the shower... the shower. I could write a review on just the shower alone. Highly recommended this little gem of a place.

I would highly recommend staying at the Happy Horse Camp! The cabins have a lovely, quaint vibe and are clean with a solid set of amenities. Showers and bathrooms are available, and the on site nature walk with the scavenger hunt is very fun. Beaux and Hollis went above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable. I proposed to my fiance and they helped set up the proposal location on the nature walk. My fiance was very suprised and it made for a magical day:) Huge thanks to Beaux and Hollis for their help and responsiveness.

What went well? EVERYTHING was better than described or expected. My wife and I were met by Bo (sorry if not the spelling). Smiling from ear to ear and just an overall wonderful person. He helped us take our things to our cabin and described different things that we could do. Everything from a scavenger hunt to harmonica lessons. Beautiful property nestled away from traffic or prying eyes. The cabins are spaced well far apart so you do not feel like others are in your business. I could not believe how well stocked the cabin was. Plenty of blankets, heaters, ceiling fans, air conditioning, cookware, microwave - this was literally the easiest camping experience I've ever had and I'm 55 lol. They also have a fire pit area for each individual cabin to make the experience even nicer. We spent 2 evenings and just had a blast. There are plenty of places to get wonderful food, beverages or any other thing you and your family might need. This is a must stop for camping on a wonderful level. Each cabin also had its own 5 star outhouse and 5 star is the truth! Absolutely cleaner than public restrooms with every necessity. I highly recommend this camping spot!

We absolutely loved camping here. Both Hollis and Beaux are AMAZING hosts. Extremely responsive and kind people. The site was beautiful. We stayed at site 4, surrounded by trees, but still able to see the stars. Beautiful lights wrapped around the tree and equipped with a grill, fire pit, and picnic table. It was truly such an amazing campsite. The outhouses were well maintained and there was even a hot water shower, also well maintained. The whole campgrounds itself is beautiful and has such a wonderful vibe. Can’t recommend this place enough!!

We stayed at one of the tent sites and it was great. Very nice area, surrounded by trees, quiet, dark, perfect. The shower and outhouse were well kept and the hosts were friendly and helpful. I'm very happy we stayed here.

Site 7 - Happy Horse Camping, Cabin, and RV
We loved glamping in our RV at the Happy Horse Ranch. Our hosts were SOOO helpful with maps, recommendations and hospitality. We loved the ukulele song Hollis came and played us at our campsite. She was so talented and created a song based off of our conversation. It was unbelievable. Great people, great place. My family and I will be back.

I absolutely love spending a few days here every year. Quiet and peaceful. Hollis and Beaux are wonderful hosts Can’t recommend enough. :)
