Tucked away amongst the dunes and mallee scrub near Willson River on Kangaroo Island, this is the sort of place where you’ll probably lose phone reception, gain perspective, and spend more time looking at the horizon than your screen. The house is completely off-grid, running on solar power and rainwater, but don’t let that scare you off. It still has all the important luxuries: a hot shower, a comfortable bed, somewhere to cook a decent meal, and a deck that’s perfectly suited to a morning coffee or an afternoon drink. The access track can be a little rough, the wildlife occasionally has right of way, and you’ll quickly discover that “just popping to the shops” isn’t really a thing out here. That’s part of the charm. Days are best spent exploring the property, wandering down to Bore Beach, hunting for rock pools, watching kangaroos graze through the bush, or simply finding a sunny spot and doing absolutely nothing. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear the ocean from the bedroom at night and wake to a dawn chorus instead of an alarm clock. One thing we love about this place is that nature hasn’t been pushed aside to make room for the house. The house sits quietly within it. The surrounding bushland is protected, the stars are ridiculous, and there are very few signs that the rest of the world is carrying on without you. A couple of things worth mentioning: * A 4WD is essential. * The roads are part of the experience. * You may see kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, echidnas and plenty of birdlife. * You may see a snake. They’re locals too. * Mobile reception exists, but it likes to keep you humble. * If you’re looking for a polished resort experience, this probably isn’t it. If, however, you like wild places, salty air, crackling fires, star-filled skies and feeling like you’ve escaped somewhere genuinely remote, we think you’ll love it here. Welcome to our favourite corner of Kangaroo Island.Access to Amenities The main house contains all essential amenities including a fully equipped kitchen, hot water, solar-powered electricity, drinking water, wood heating and a composting toilet.
