About halfway between Adelaide and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, Laura is the perfect spot for a road-trip pitstop—and an ice cream. The town’s Golden North Ice Cream is an iconic South Australian brand, so it would be rude not to sample a cone (or two). While you’re in town, swing by the Beetaloo Reservoir to kayak or fish for Murray Cod, cycle along the historic Stone Hut Rail Trail, or explore the forested bushwalking trails of Wirrabara Range Conservation Park. Just to the north, Mount Remarkable National Park has great hiking and mountain biking in the southern Flinders Ranges, as well as cabin rentals and two campgrounds with shaded tent and caravan campsites. Campers will find several options in and around Laura, too, whether you prefer a back-to-nature bush camping experience, a farm stay, or a family-friendly caravan park with powered sites and plenty of amenities.
