Welcome to Maverick's Rest, a serene escape tucked away on the outskirts of Peterborough, South Australia, and connected with our working alpaca farm and newly planted lavender Only 700m off the main Petersburg Road (entry off Dawson Road), Our bush campsites offer a blend of natural beauty, and rustic charm, with each site positioned amongst old native pines, offering views of both sunrise and sunset, along with the open farmland, distant hills, and animals doing their thing. Each site features a level pad to keep you out of the dirt and the prickles, while defining your spot. There are also firepits and bins on each site. We currently require all campers to be fully self-contained, providing their own toilet, water, and power for a true off-grid experience. We are a work-in-progress and constantly chipping away at making things even better! The centrepiece of the campsite is an absolutely stunning stone ruin. We wish the walls could talk to tell us its story! We are currently working on making this space accessible to all our guests. In the mean time fell free to have a look through, it makes for gorgeous photos. Want more? - Add on an Alpaca Meet and Greet Experience, where you can meet and hand-feed our friendly alpaca herd, and learn about these amazing creatures. During this experience you will meet our alpacas, llamas, camels and others. Book now when you book your site as an add-on for a discounted rate. - Indulge in our breakfast pack, featuring farm-fresh eggs, bacon, and yummy sausages from our award winning butcher. As a working farm, we ask that you refrain from allowing your animals to interact with ours for everyone's safety and peace of mind. Only 2.5km from the centre of the main street, use us as a base to explore Peterborough and surrounds. PS: Maverick was the name of our favourite stud male alpaca, and the dad to many of our babies. He was on TV, in weddings and the star of many a photo shoots. A true character, you would have loved him - just like we hope you love this campsite.

Great value stay in a beautiful country setting. We loved watching the alpacas in the distant paddock. We stayed on site 4 which was a convenient drive-thru and appreciated the supplied firepit and bin onsite. The kids loved the alpaca feeding experience and seeing all the new babies.

This is a place I would love to keep a secret! But my family had such a great stay that I feel I should share our experience. It was so peaceful and quiet yet close to the Peterborough town and alpaca farm. It was clean and a nice hard site so wasn't muddy when it rained. So much wildlife to see. Lovely to wake up to beautiful green fields in winter with soaring eagles and a family of kangaroos live nearby. The alpaca feeding was definitely the highlight for my daughter. They were wonderful, such characters and dolly the big pig. You also must get the breakfast pack or personally vivit the Peterborough butcher for their award winning sausages. I like that the sites aren't too close, lots of room to manoeuvre and the gate is locked. Will stay longer next time. Thankyou to Amee's daughter who delivered the breakfast pack and took time to tell us about the farm. And to tash and her amazing kids who were so welcoming at the alpaca farm 💕

Beautiful sunset, property was well organised with bin, parking area and even fire pit. Close to town but unfortunately missed the cafe as we arrived after 4pm.Make sure you guys reach on time and enjoy the town and cafe. Will visit again Thankyou

Location of Maverick’s Rest area is perfect to sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscape, great sunrises and sunsets, peaceful and flat camp site that is close to the township. It’s also lovely to watch the Alpacas roaming freely in the nearby paddocks

The campsite itself looks beautiful and offers great privacy. However, we decided not to stay after discovering that the alpaca farm is located directly across from a camel slaughterhouse (apparently the biggest one in Australia). We found it too distressing to enjoy our stay and felt it was both contradictory and hypocritical to celebrate and care for alpacas while other animals are being slaughtered right across the street. Unfortunately, the owner did not seem sympathetic and instead defended the slaughterhouse, which we found backward and not aligned with basic ethical standards. We did, however, receive a full refund.

This was our second stay at Mavericks Rest, both overnighters. We really loved the open landscape and peacefulness of being in the countryside. In April 2025 it was very much in drought, while this time it was very green and in good condition. Regardless we loved both times. We’d definitely return if we were passing through. Highly recommended.

The old ruin was a great place to photograph our site. It was quiet and you couldn’t hear the noise from the town. It was lovely to see the cows and their calves come and investigate us. We also loved seeing the alpacas frolic in the paddock. They were very inquisitive and such beautiful colours. Some of the boys got out and it made us google the mating regimes of alpacas. Very interesting.

Such friendly hosts. Aimee and her 2 daughters. We’ve just had 2 nights there and enjoyed every aspect of it. Beautiful setting with a ruin nearby and views out over the surrounding paddocks filled with Alpaca, cows, a couple of camels and a pig. We were able to book an experience to meet and feed the animals (dont try to feed the pig) and visit their art gallery and small shop. Lovely items to look at and buy if you want a momento. Would recommend this place to everyone. Nice level sites all with fire pits and only a few to ensure space. Well thought out. Thanks to our hosts for a lovely stay

Everything was great, from the correspondence with the lovely host to the instructions given finding the place to the actual campsite. Very well done and thought through and a terrific effort by the host family to make the guests feel welcome. Highly recommended and a must visit when in the area!

A great spot to stay over on the way to Findets Ranges. Sites were nice and tidy with a fire pit provided. Amee was a great host. Took the time to tell us all about the resotation of the farm, including the old house and the beautiful alpacas. Highly recommended
