This central location provides an ideal basecamp close to the Terlingua Ghost Town and both Big Bend State and National Parks. The unique geology and topography of the Goat Pens made this a popular movie set and many westerns were filmed here in the 80's and 90's. Come out and enjoy seclusion, peace and quiet, awesome scenery with sunrises and sunsets to die for. All while still being able to easily take advantage of the area's other attractions.
The Goat Pens includes an outdoor events venue that hosts concerts, stargazing parties, festivals and weddings. The Goat Pens also has the only drive-in movie theater in the Big Bend area. Send a text or check The Goat Pens Facebook page (@goatpens) for information and dates of events.
The Goat Pens of Cigar Springs Ranch is a beautiful part of the ranch. It is well known for its scenery and unique topography. The Goat Pens served as a set location for many westerns filmed during the 1980's and 90's.
Remarkable beauty, easy access, centrally located, seclusion, peace and quiet. All add up to an unforgettable vacation experience.

Primitive camping and dry RV sites. Plenty of acreage to explore. The Goat Pens of Cigar Springs Ranch, once part of the historic G4 ranch, are easily accessed and located on South County Road. Since the campground is in the middle of our private ranch the dark skies and starry nights are unlike any other. All while still being able to easily take advantage of the area's other attractions.

The Goat Pens campsite offers a blend of seclusion and convenience, nestled close to Big Bend and Terlingua. Campers frequently mention the clean restrooms and showers, along with the stunning night skies filled with stars. Visitors appreciate the space and privacy the dispersed camping provides, and many highlight the friendly host and his adorable dog, Pepper. However, potential visitors should note the occasional windy conditions and the lack of cell reception.
My husband and I enjoyed camping at The Goat Pens. We were able to have the dispersed camping experience of some of the backcountry sites in Big Bend National Park but without the need for an off-road vehicle. The clean pit toilets and outdoor showers were an added plus. We were also able to walk our dog on the property and were in close proximity to the pet sitter in Terlingua that we used while hiking in Big Bend National Park. Jeff offered to meet us on arrival but the directions on Hipcamp were good enough we didn’t need any assistance. Note that just like dispersed camping in the national park, there is no potable water and no place at camp to throw away trash. We were there 4 nights and during that time there was one other couple camping for one of those nights. If the campground had been full it would have been a much different experience, but as it was it was perfect for us.
What a lovely little place! Far enough from town to feel secluded, but not SO out there that it gets spooky. Solo female traveler approved. Will certainly be back.
Amazing place! My father and I spent nearly a week here and really only have good things to say. You’re surrounded by the raw land here with the option of primitive camping or using the facilities. It was fairly isolated and really comfortable. Really liked it here!
Awesome place to camp very close to Big Bend and Terlingua. Had a great time tent camping. Easy to follow directions and instructions. Would 100% pick this spot again.
I absolutely love this spot. It’s clean, surrounded by nature and mountains, and well-maintained! There was one night we heard coyotes and they were a bit far off but if you’re staying in an on-the ground rig be sure to put your food away where animals can’t get to it! There was also a thunderstorm on our third night here, winds picked up a lot, so be prepared for weather to change fairly quickly. Overall, it’s been an amazing experience and I absolutely love this place and will be back!
I loved camping here when wasn't windy lol that was a little rough the 1st 2 nights but other than that it was amazing how close you are from Terlingua.
This camping site was excellent. The process to get in and get out was simple and efficient, the bathrooms and showers were nice, and the location is stunning and close to Big Bend National Park!
My family loved camping at The Goat Pens, just outside of Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The sunrises were gorgeous. The pit toilets were clean and surprisingly odor-free. The campground is secured behind a locked gate and the sites are dispersed. We will definitely stay here again. My only complaint is the lack of communication and no return phone call after I left multiple voice mails, hoping to ask a question before booking. However, we met the owner on site and he was very welcoming in person.
I loved tent camping on Jeff's land, especially the full view of the night sky. Absolutely amazing. The restrooms and showers were simple and clean, an even had light and running water. Jeff made sure that everything was alright. Great communication and very friendly.
It’s exactly what I was looking for! We brought tents, but had a truck bed lounge for stargazing and ended up sleeping in that every night. You get plenty of space from your neighbors; the bugs weren’t bad, besides a few minutes surrounding sunset; the location is absolute perfection in my opinion; would stay here again.
Found a private area and stayed a second night. Just a heads up, the owner has a dog that loves to run loose and visit everyone. Bathroom clean and stars amazing.
Awesome spot near Study Butte. Perfect for remote camping but with creature comforts like showers and bathrooms. Close to town with options for food and drink as well. About an hour from most popular hiking trails in Big Bend. Jeff met us and was very hospitable when checking in. Couldn’t ask for a better camp spot for Big Bend!! Pepper the camp dog was so sweet to come around and chill with us at night!
This camping area was great! Jeff was super nice and welcoming. Bathrooms and shower were nice and clean. Plenty of spread out sites and lots of room to roam. It was also nice to be able to pick our campsite.
I loved camping at the goat pens! Beautiful scenery and a great place to view the stars. Showers and bathrooms were a great addition to the campsite. Pepper was the cutest and sweetest dog. :)
Great location near gas/ice/water. Warm host and host dog :) awesome skies and serviceable toilets. Really laid back. Lots of families in the Goatpens.
Great stay at the pens. Lots of space for dispersed camping, clean bathrooms and showers, beautiful night skies and very close to Big Bend. Be prepared for no cell reception and possibly a cold shower but gorgeous spot for camping.
Great place to camp near the park. About 10 minutes from entrance, nice and close to restaurants and everything in Terlingua. Nice views, and bathrooms are in great condition. Would definitely stay here again.
My sister and I really enjoyed camping at Goat Pens. The showers were refreshing, and the bathrooms were clean. The downside was that campers nearby were playing loud music until 11:30. It was challenging to contact the host with lack of cell reception, but he was kind when we met him in person!
No goats, was looking forward to seeing them. Bathrooms and showers clean and very nice.
A bit of a dust bowl. It’s located between small hills and the wind just swirled and blew dust and sand everywhere. Many tents were blown over. We have an off-road style teardrop trailer, but wind was rocking us back and forth. Felt like we were inside a tornado. Unable to cook dinner, so ended up in the ghost town and wind was not an issue there. When we checked in guy said wind dies at sunset. It didn’t this week. About 9pm on the first night (reserved for 4nights) we pulled out and ended up in Big Bend ranch state park about 20 miles up the road. Still windy but no dust or blowing sand.
We stopped by the next 2 days in the afternoon and still saw blown over tents and wind still blowing. Besides the wind it seems to be a decent campground
And close to town. Ended up staying in Big Bend ranch state park lower Madeira campground on the river
We booked one night and despite the wind, loved it enough to come back. We found a lovely private spot. One thing to note is that the owner has a dog that is super friendly and off leash. Pepper loves to visit every site.
Tent camping at the Goat Pens was a great experience. It is definitely a great get away from city life! No light pollution so the night sky is spectacular! The host Jeff introduced himself to us on the first day and told us to make ourselves at home. Outdoor showers and pit toilets make for a true camping experience. Only a short drive from Big Bend National Park!
This was our second stay at Goat Pens. Jeff's got a great piece of land here where you're close to everything in Terlingua but it's all tucked into a bowl area where you don't see any surrounding lights from other properties thanks to the low ridge bordering the sites. The dark skies are incredible, and sites, restrooms and shower were super clean.
This is my third time staying at the pens and It was a great stay as always. The bathrooms are clean and the property is beautiful. Can't recommend it enough. Thanks Jeff
