***COVID-19 Guidelines & Protocols***We have set these policies to ensure an enjoyable and safe camping season:

  • Please be prepared for longer wait times at the front gate as we review new protocol and onboarding procedures on site with individual guests. Upon entry at our front gate, please pull over where instructed, and wait in your car to be checked in. In compliance with CDC guidelines, all campers will have their temperature taken remotely from outside the car, and asked a few questions clarifying origin and locations visited that day. We will also record your driver’s license and plate number. Thank you for your patience as we evolve together.
  • Please plan for a completely self-sufficient campout, and BYO EVERYTHING! This includes food, stove, cookware, cups/plates/utensils, ice, napkins, and toilet paper! Please contact us before you arrive if you would like to rent a cooler, and remember that Mendocino Magic does not allow styrofoam anywhere on the property.
  • To minimize contact within Mendocino County, we request that you prepare groceries and supplies within your home county before traveling to the Magic.
  • Maintain a minimum of 10 feet from people outside of your group at all times, especially with use of any commons such as hiking our pathways, swimming in the reservoir, or while playing sports (please bring your own games and floaties-we will not be supplying them this season).
  • Wear a mask when you are not at your campsite.
  • Use the hand wash stations located outside of the portapotties.
  • As always, please pack out all of your waste and dispose of your trash at home. Prepare in advance with cardboard burnable or compostable packaging to minimize waste, as well as a garbage bag to pack out your waste.
  • Any persons seen not complying with these updated guidelines will be asked to leave without a refund. We are not kidding about this!

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Abuelo Camp is a quarter mile hike up from the main lot, by the Reservoir along a footpath. Campers love this site because of its proximity to the Reservoir and it is perfect for smaller camping groups ideally for 3-4 tents maximum.

It is located under a huge oak tree covered in Usnea hirta (also known as OId Man's Beard or Spanish Moss), a stringy type of lichen. We named this site Abuelo (which is Spanish for grandfather) after the two names for the plant. It features a picnic table and flat, grassy ground to pitch your tent on.

Park in the Reservoir Parking Lot near Campers Orchard and plan to walk gear up to this campsite. Because the trail to Abuelo and the reservoir is up a dirt path which may include stairs, we do not recommend use of hand carts for hauling gear and remember to pack light!

There is shade under the oak tree, and the Reservoir is a one minute walk away.  At night, enjoy the incredible view of the stars.

Currently reservation requests for this campsite are set for 5 campers. When booking the site for more than 5 guests please edit your request to reflect accurate headcount information in advance of your arrival. Additional campers are $30 per adult nightly. Currently we can only allow up to 12 campers per one site.

***A NOTE ABOUT FIRES: Some campsites at Mendocino Magic have a firepit, but occasionally during the summer months the state bans fires for campers. ABUELO CAMP DOES NOT HAVE A FIRE PIT. Campers at Abuelo wishing to have a campfire are invited to join us at the communal fire pit (by the Central Camper's Kitchen) where it is safest. We will keep you posted about the status of fires on the property when you book your reservation. Since we would hate to take campfires out of the camping experience, we have started the #onefire campaign to keep campers happy with a fire at our communal cooking area at the Central Camper's Kitchen, where on Friday and Saturday nights there will be a fire for all to enjoy. During a fire ban, please do not start a fire up at any camp's fire ring - guests who do so will be asked to leave without a refund.

Great secluded campsite next to the reservoir lake. You will be camping under a century old oak tree. We had to pick the carts to move our gear up to the campsite. It was really easy walk 2min from the parking space. If you want quiet nights and in a private secluded camp, this is your site. Bring a stove if you want to cook in the site.

You will love Abuelo camp. It is at a close walk from the lake and you will be camping under a century old oak-tree with Spanish mossAbuelo camp faces south east. Perfectly located to enjoy the milky way at night, leave your rainfly out and sleep under the stars on a warm summer night.Abuelo camp provides enough flat areas for for 2 or 3 tentsAbuelo camp is a dry camp under a old oak-tree shade.

We had a great time at Abuelo camp. It was a last minute trip but worked out well. We went kayaking and swimming, grilled out in the communal grill area, and then stared at an amazing night sky from our campsite. Our dogs also loved it!

Abuelo camp is awesome. It's a spacious secluded spot on the way up to the water which is where we spent most of our time. If you're looking for a hike-in spot with great amenities around the property at your disposal, stay here! This spot does get a lot of sun, so come prepared.

Map upon entering the property is so great! Hike up to camp Abuelo Camp

The campsite is a short walk to the lake — which was a deal breaker — as well as a porter potty. There's canoes and paddles available at the lake, first come first serve. The campsite has a picnic bench and enough space for 4-5 tents. There's not a lot of shade at the site so I recommend bringing a shade structure. The site is uphill from the parking lot. There's wagons available for guests to lug gear to the site, which is about a 5-10 min walk on a dirt road.

The overall campsite has a communal fireplace, as well as grills and a seating area. Also, the porter potties and showers were well kept.

This is a great location for quarantine. Enough space to socially distance from other campsites, including the communal spaces. Would go back again!
