Beautiful grounds, pictures are very representative but what they don't show is that you are at the foot of an upswept mountain range. Gorgeous. Johnny and Gigi are awesome hosts and are very knowledgeable. Would recommend.

We booked out all 3 campsites between 3 families (8 people total) the weekend of February 5-7th. We were assured that it would be blocked to any other campers while we were there.
Gig greeted us at the campsite when we arrived. She immediately huddled us all together to "explain the situation". She told us that they have a "land partner" and that they had a falling out and that the "land partner" doesn't like them doing HipCamp. She said that we needed to be secretive about the situation. She said that if anyone askes,, that we were friends of theirs. This was pretty shocking since we had paid over $500 for 2 nights at the campsite.
We set up our tents, had dinner, sat by the campfire,, and were having a good evening. We had gone to bed around 9PM,, when a 10PM,, another truck showed up with 3 people. They were making a lot of noise,, were obviously drunk and high,, and continued to make noise and stay up around the campfire until 3AM,, finally falling asleep in the back of their truck. We all woke up feeling exhausted and very disappointed in the situation as we were assured at the time of booking that there would be no other campers. They left in the morning with the "land partners" dog and were talking about coming back that night.
I spoke to the host Gigi about this and she said that she didn't know who they were and appeared apologetic. She said that they likely knew their land partner and that she couldn't control what they do on the property. We decided to leave and find another place to camp for the night.
Gigi was nice enough to refund us for the night that we didn't stay,, but I have also asked for a partial refund on our first night as we didn't get the entire campsite to ourselves as advertised. She didn't agree.
This campsite is beautiful and has great ocean views at sunset. It is nice to have a flushing toilet and an outdoor kitchen space. That being said,, a night of no sleep with loud strangers hanging out 20 feet from our tent,, made the situation miserable.
My biggest issue with Gigi is that she does not advertise that they don't fully own the property, and promises things that they can't come through with. If you are ok with the uncertainty of this,, by all means,, book away. Kaupo is a magical place.

We stayed three nights at Kaupo Maui Puka au Huhu Farm and with out a doubt the best Hipcamp experience I have ever had. Gigi and Jonny could not have been more friendly and gracious. We shared stories by the campfire every night, leading about the history of the area and the overall history of the farm. The stargazing was out of this world incredible; on a clear night able to see the Milky Way. The location was excellent as a base for the road to Hana, taking only 35 min to get to Hanatown. The addition of the cooking shack, and flushing toilet really made the whole stay feel like a luxurious glamping experience. Overall, I cannot recommend staying at Puka au Huhu farm enough.

This is a beautiful spot with great amenities. Loved the hammock and the ocean view. And enjoyed hanging at the fire pit with Gigi and Johnny

Gigi and Johnny have a beautiful space for a campsite, with excellent views in every direction. We loved our afternoon watching the sunset and using their facilities. We would definitely stay at their place again and recommend that everyone experience the natural beauty of Maui through camping at the Kaupo Maui Puka au Huhu Farm!

Gigi and Johnny were friendly and accommodating hosts. The property is right off the main road in Kaupo. They share it with another person (that they had a falling out with and apparently there is some ill will , although it didn't impact our 1 night stay).
The camping area is a spacious grassy area with some shaded trees, an outdoor kitchen area (available for use as long as the other landowner is not using), a variety of chairs and tables, and some charm (hammock, wooden swing, pergola). You can choose where to pitch your tent and pull up your car (although it's requested to park in separate parking area overnight).
The soft grass has been overtaken by some tough weeds (freshly cut, though), but it wasn't a problem (we use air mattresses). We did see a lot of red ants on the grass but were assured they weren't the biting kind and managed fine, being extra careful to not let our stuff get taken over by them.
Weather was pleasant at night, with a cool breeze; can probably get windy here, and I chose a night with lighter winds, although the howling was still intermittent overnight. They were nice enough to open up just for us despite the long COVID shutdown (we live on Maui), so the outdoor kitchen wasn't as stocked/operational (no propane stove or filtered water, as some other reviews allude to), but that wasn't an issue for us.
The views of the ocean and the craggy volcano (especially at morning light) are special.
As this is a "Residential Area" (per the sign), there are other properties nearby. It is low density with clear rural/rustic/off-the-beaten-path vibe, both this property and presumably those nearby. Sleeping can be a challenge if you are a light sleeper or don't have ear plugs. We heard intermittent barking dogs fairly often and late, some bass/music (it was a Saturday night), roosters in the morning around sunrise, lots of birds, howling of the wind, and cars from the road (Hawaii local vehicles tend to be old and loud), so keep in mind you may not get the solitude of remote camping. We also smelled cigarette smoke a few times, but it didn't last that long and didn't overshadow our stay.
All in all, a good option for breaking up the Road to Hana route with camping.

What an AMAZING place! Gigi and Johnny were wonderful hosts. We had the pleasure of ringing in the New Year with them on their beautiful property. The outdoor kitchen is perfectly appointed and the outdoor bathroom is a treat. We loved hanging out with them by the fire and watching the sun go down.

Gigi and Johnny are very nice and gracious hosts. We camped for 3 days on their property and it was amazing! We were going to travel around the area but decided to stay on the land instead and just relax. We did venture to a near by stream that was running with crystal clear water under a bridge. But otherwise pitched our tent and hung our hammocks between the trees and enjoyed the perfect weather, incredible view and nice breeze. At night we had camp fires and Gig and Johnny supplied wood from nearby piles of old wood. The flushing toilet and Cold but refreshing shower was a plus!

The site and hosts were awesome! This is a beautiful, remote space with no light pollution. We saw billions of stars and woke up to a full rainbow over our breakfast table. We’d come back in a heartbeat! Thank you for hosting us :)

Such a lovely site. Rainbows in the sky every morning, with the mountains reflecting golden sunlight. Gigi and Johnny were such kind hosts. We cooked dinner together one night and they generously shared their food with me. Love the cute little outdoor kitchen, and the convenience of having a toilet and a basic outdoor shower onsite. The drive there is absolutely breathtaking. This side of the island has its own special magic. Please note that because the campsite is located at a remote area, the nearest stores are at least an hr away. I would not recommend driving in that area after dark as the roads are narrow and bumpy at times. Stay here if you’re looking to get away from the touristy areas and have a peaceful time to recharge in nature.

Johnny and Gigi were generous and welcoming hosts. Their piece of land, situated in the remote area of Kaupō, the backslide of Maui, was a true jewel. The gazebo allowed us to cook a delicious meal on a rainy night and Johnny made a fire afterwards so he and Gigi, us, and a amazing couple from Brooklyn, NYC, could relax. This campground was a coup-de-coeur for us. If you decide to visit Johnny and Gigi, you must consider (as clearly indicated in the add) that is a 30 min drive from any store. Also, there is a shower but very low water and it is outdoor, no walls. All things considered, we recommend a one night stay at this camping as a must during your Maui camping trip.

Hosts, setting, and facilities all get 10/10. If you are looking for a unique, adventurous, and secluded way to experience Maui, you’ve found it. Get away from the tourists and bask in the awe inspiring shadow of Haleakala. The kitchen, bathroom, and shower were all very nice touches. Exploring this area was also really fun. Check out the two little churches nearby. If you are up for a challenging hike, you can get into the Haleakala crater by hiking up through the Kaupo gap.

Gigi and Johnny were fabulous hosts, and their property is in a beautiful spot. I was a little nervous about driving the rental car that far past Hana -- but the road wasn't too bad and their home was easy to find. Amazing stars, plenty of space, filtered water, and we saw a moonbow!! Plus staying there allowed us to get to O'heo Gulch and Venus Falls before most others arrived. Highly recommend. Thanks Gigi and Johnny!

Johnny takes his time to explain us all the property. The kitchen (fruits stand) is very convenient to cook everything you want. A propane stove is provided.
I really want to thank Johnny to share his 1M dollars view!!
The mountains and the sea views are amazing!
I'd definitely recommend when you're in the area!

The pictures on the web site were very accurate in detailing the site, and seeing the large grassy area and shade trees certainly is certainly nice. The were 3 in my party and no other campers on the one night I booked, but even if there were others, there is plenty of room. It was great having a propane burner to cook on and the campfire was out of this world, not to mention, on an almost cloudless night, the stars were amazing. I am looking forward to going again and staying 2 nights this time so I can explore around the area.

Great place, remote, green, spacious. The hosts were very nice. We loved it and our kids loved it as well. The kitchen was well equipped, the only drawback was the outdoor shower but it is camping after all:)

Spectacular ocean, Haleakala, and sunset views from your tent! Gigi and Johnny are wonderful hosts who make you feel right at home. There is a cute fruit stand turned into an outdoor kitchen and trees to hang your hammock. The drive from Kula is perfect for photo-ops along the way. This is a side of Maui that is truly special and not very many people get to experience. We will definitely be back!

Very remote but perfect stopover if you're driving the Hana loop or hiking the kaupo gap. Large, open, grassy area with shaded areas to pitch your tent or hang a hammock. The best attribute for this camp site is the endless ocean/island views to the west & the volcano view to the North! Amazing!! Gigi & Johnny are warm & inviting hosts. Highly recommended. : )

I absolutely adored this place! Gigi and Johnny are amazing hosts; so welcoming and kind. Gigi also had great suggestions for places to stop along the drive in. Make sure you check out the Hana Highway during your stay, it's an absolute must to see the waterfalls! The view from their property is so incredible, to the South was the Ocean and to North is the mountain Haleakala. I will definitely be coming back to stay again, this place is so unique. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, this land is so serene and calming. You are completely surrounded by the natural beauty of the Southern part of Maui. The location is about an hour from Kula and Hana, where you might want to stop for groceries. Make sure to check out the winery along the drive from Kula or stop for breakfast at Grandma's. A huge plus of this site is the communal outdoor kitchen in a gazebo that the hosts built, which is fully stocked with cookware and dishware. Gigi and Johnny also have built an AMAZING outdoor bathroom that is nestled in the vegetation at the back of the property. There is plenty of room for tents and would be such an ideal location for a family reunion or larger party. It was so fun to hear the history behind this location and the story of Gigi and Johnny's wedding here back in 2009. Thank you so much for hosting me and I'm so grateful to have met you guys!
