Beautiful beach, difficult campsite
It was magical sitting on the beach with a fire, watching the sun set over Duluth. Really cool to be able to camp right on the beach. However, was it worth the price of a nice hotel? You will have to decide that for yourself. To help you out, there are a few things you need to know: Pack light because it is a steep trek over uneven ground to your site. Site number 1 where we stayed was really not usable, so we ended up moving down to the beach. The wooden platform is the only place to pitch a tent, but there is no place to stake your tent down or even close trees to tie it to. A huge problem if it is windy and rainy like we experienced. The site is really steep, with a huge depression in the middle, and cut or snapped off branches sticking out all over the ground so it is hard to move around in the site or set up anywhere else on the hillside. Also, it is covered in clay, which is really slippery when wet and your shoes will have large cakes of clay stuck to the bottom of them. There is a massive pile of debris at the bottom of the hill made up of driftwood and what looks like vegetation that was bulldozed to clear the campsite. Also, when we arrived there was another couple that had a confirmation that they also had site number one. We had to call John to straighten that out. They apparently had a different site, but it was pretty awkward when we both had gotten confirmation of site number one.
We ended up having a great time because we stayed on the beach instead of the campsite clearing, but I am left wondering why just a little more effort wasn’t put in to make the actual campsite more usable, especially given what we paid to camp there.
