39 ft travel trailer · With kids · All the porta potties were not only putrid-smelling before even opening the door, but the liquid inside was orange-brown, with larvae and dead mosquitos. Porta potties are supposed to be filled with blue chemical liquid to keep odor down and break down feces. Industry standard is to pump out every 7-10 days, even with minimal use.
I brought this concern up with Maureen via the HipCamp App. With my previous messages the day before, she responded within 1-2 hours. However, it was almost 36 hours later that we received a visit from Maureen, who said she had been away traveling that day. When my husband brought up the porta potty concern, she responded, “what, you mean the natural bacterial colonies?” We began to explain that they needed to be serviced, and invited her to take a look at the porta potty standing 200 feet away. She refused to look, and responded that she knows the porta potties very well, as she is the one who services them, cleans them, and pumps them out. She continued to explain to us how we were wrong, and she was right, without once acknowledging our concerns or admitting her errors. As a business owner myself, I know that this is not a reasonable or respectful way to communicate and interact with clients. We felt unheard, dismissed, and gaslit.
I took photographs of these porta potties and shared with friends who are septic installers, sewer employees, and public health professors; they all agreed- this is a hazard for human and environmental health.
