Tom was very communicative and responsive. Although due to travel issues we ended up not being able to make it to his land, he was very patient with our changing plans and went to extra lengths to try and accommodate us. Will definitely attempt to book again the next time I travel that way.

Super remote and beautiful view of the stars! Was a little tricky getting in because the directions aren’t quite what your maps app will tell you (as of 12/2/21)— find the tan house and get in touch with Tom before you try to proceed to a campsite. Once you’re there it’s great, just be prepared to navigate some rocky dirt road!

We enjoyed our stay at the Rocking W Ranch! We arrived later than expected & it was after dark by the time we got there, but Mr. Waterston was graciously waiting for us at the gate & gave us a brief run down of where we could set up camp. We found a spot for the night & set up camp; the next morning when we opened our tent, we saw that there were beautiful mountains all surrounding us, it was absolutely gorgeous!!! The sunrise, over the mountains was recharging & awakening. We drove all over the ranch on the roads Mr. Waterston gave us permission to go on, we're in a jeep, I wouldn't recommend a mini van or sedan try to go up on the trails but if you do, it's so incredible!

Such an amazing place to camp! Definitely need 4WD to get around, but it’s stunning scenery and you feel immediately detached from the world. The hiking and views are also great!

We were unable to get our RV onto the very rocky and unmaintained dirt road of this location. I have a text thread telling me that the road was possible and the sides were flat. That was not true. After several tries we could not get up the rough road. We ended up sleeping in a parking lot that night. The host would not refund us.

I would highly recommend camping at Tom Lee's place. My son and I had a great weekend and enjoyed the scenery as well as exploring the property. Tom Lee was a great host and we appreciated meeting him and learning about the ranch.

Camping at the Rocking W Ranch far exceeded our expectations! We were searching HipCamp for something off-grid, private, with views and hiking. The Rocking W Ranch delivered that and more! With our 4x4 / high clearance, Tom Lee directed us to the road that took us to the highest parts of his ranch. After driving to the top and looking around a bit, we selected a spot that had a phenomenal view of the valley below us and the mountains around us. From that base camp we spent the next 2 days hiking around the ranch, amazed by all the butterflies. We also spent time just sitting and listening to the peaceful silence, and enjoying gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. And the stars! Oh, my. We heard an elk bugle, and watched a mule deer walk right past our camp, while we were sitting in our chairs. We found other potential camping spots with fantastic views, so obviously we will need to go back and try them! As we were leaving, we had a longer conversation with Tom Lee about the ranch and the history. He is very knowledgable and clearly loves the land. Thanks, Tom Lee, for sharing your patch of heaven on earth with us.

This is a great place to camp for new campers. The owner Tom was very helpful in helping us find the entrance and directing us to where we could set up. We went in September and it was warm during the day but at night the temperatures drop quickly. If you are going up the mountain you will absolutely need a 4x4, otherwise a 2WD is fine for camping in the lower area near the house.

This was an amazing area to camp and enjoy the mountains, state park and surrounding towns! Tom Lee greeted us upon arrival in true Texan friendly style and gave us great direction on where to camp! The drive up the mountain was AWESOME but only recommend if you own 4WD! The views were amazing and spectacular! Gods county!

Tom’s place is out of this world. If you like a little adventure and breathtaking views his place needs to be a must on your list! Having the ability to explore the land and picking your own place to camp in something that has been lost in Texas but not here. During the day the views of the Davis Mountains are top notch and at night the star gazing is one of a kind. We had the Milky Way over is all night and so many shooting stars we lost count. The weather is always very mild so this is one of the few places that you can summer camp in Texas and not bake, with places like Balmorhea, The McDonald Observatory, and historic Fort Davis just down the road it’s a perfect vacation spot.
My only small complaint would be the amount of rocks, if you are sleeping in a ground tent make sure you really comb the area and get the rocks out of the way.

Tom is welcoming, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Views are beautiful from the peaks on his land, moderate off roading to get to peak. Great experience.

Tom was very accommodating and helpful with the property. Just a week before our stay the area had severe torrential rain storms that washed a few of his roads out some. A high clearence 4wd vehicle is a must for accessing the majority of the property, but there are areas to camp with a vehicle lacking these features. Unfortunately i learned while there that my vehicle has a vacuum leak and and lacked the power to get up some of the very steep areas it normally should have been able to make it up, but we found a really lovely area we were able to access with really lovely views, huge night sky, and many lightning bugs that came out to greet us before bed. A really special and private camping experience, and I'd love to make it back to access the rest of the property when i get my car taken care of

What a fabulous experience! If you like being away from it all and have high clearance/ 4x4 this place is a must. The host is wonderful, his ranch is beautiful. I can't wait to return.

Tom’s property is something out of a movie. 4x4 is an absolute must, so be sure to drop it into 4H and crawl your way to the top of the ridge overlooking Fort Davis. My wife, dog and I had the best nights sleep camping up there, no joke. Quiet, clean, no bugs, and a star gazers paradise. What else could you ask for? Book now. Tom is an awesome host and a great guy to chat with.

We had a great time here. We were a bit worried that it would get too hot, but we were able to pitch our tent next to a cabin that provided plenty of shade. The property is huge and gorgeous, and we were able to take a short hike in the morning before got too hot. I will definitely camp here again next time I’m passing through the area.

Tom Lee met my husband, 4 dogs & I as soon as we pulled up to his house. Tom Lee swept my husband away in his truck to find us the perfect spot for our 25 ft. off-road camper on his land. We did have a great spot! We let Tom Lee know we were going to be leaving early in the morning so he opened a lower gate for us that lead right to the main road. Tom encouraged us to drive our 4wd truck around his gorgeous property. My husband would love to come back to hunt.

The quietest camp I've ever had. Felt very secluded but safe. Majestic camp in the middle of mountains. Absolutely beautiful landscape with a gorgeous mountain hike. Tom Lee was so hospitable and kind. Def plan on returning.

Rocking W Ranch Camping
Tom’s place is amazing! It’s secluded and beautiful and Tom is such a great host. He has plenty of hiking suggestions and even drove us to the top of the mountain so we could hike down. My husband and I definitely want to come back as soon as possible!

Friendly host with a nice lot. Multiple hike options to get to top of hill with great views. If you have the right vehicle there's a road to the top. I had a Corolla so had to hike about a mile to the top.

It was our 2nd time staying at Rocking W Ranch and we will definitely be coming back again. Tom Lee is very nice and knows his property very well. I definitely recommend it. Having 4x4 is necessary if you want the best views and campsites.

The trails are great quality both going up the mountain as well as coming back down. We found a beautiful area to camp at the top of the mountain. Does get fairly windy by the overlook we camped at. Overall 10/10 would camp here again

Fantastic spot. Pictures really don’t do it justice. Tons of space. Very private. Recommend 4WD for the best camp spots. Tom is a really cool guy and great host.
