THE CAMPGROUND The Baying Hound Campground is where rural Appalachia meets “keep Asheville weird.” You’ll see sleeping pods decorated by professional artists, structures made from upcycled building materials and permaculture experiments in the making. We’ve been described as “if a European hostel and an Appalachian campground had a baby.” Not quite glamping and definitely not KOA, we're happy to offer you a more social alternative to cookie-cutter lodging without breaking the bank. *Van-lifers, truck-top-tenters and other vehicle dwellers* Y'all are welcome to book this spot! Note that the parking area is SEPARATE from the site pictured and you can NOT drive down to the site. You'll be sleeping in the parking area and still have access to all our facilities. SHARED CAMPGROUND AMENITIES: - Indoor bathroom and sinks - Indoor hangout area - Charging station for your phones and tablets behind our graffiti’d garage - A re-imagined, yet decidedly old-school pit latrine - Outdoor sink with cold running water (seasonal = April-October) - Outdoor shower (seasonal = April-October, CLOSED Nov-March) - Community fire pit with wood for sale for $5 a packet - Community charcoal grill (be sure to bring your own charcoal) + picnic table - Omoplata Overlook hangout area with deck furniture, table, hammock and solar lights - Multiple picnic tables - Wi-Fi zone with varying quality of internet (but you’re camping, so you should enjoy the outdoors and company of your friends :)) - Nearby Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym! Ask us more if you’re interested. - Curiosity Trail :) *FAQ: Is this a good spot to bring my kiddos? Our campground is not equipped to handle the magical, whirlwind force that children release unto the world. There's a lot of breakable stuff, tempting treehouses (that might be occupied by other guests!), sites that are within earshot of each other, and hazards that aren't a good fit for kids. THE NEIGHBORHOOD The campground is located in the "Emma" area of Asheville. Also known as "Wild Wild West Asheville" (to distinguish it from regular West Asheville which is about 5 minutes' drive away), this is the last bastion of non-gentrified Asheville. Emma is completely un-zoned, so you get an interesting mixture of mostly residential and agricultural properties that scatter the area. The campground itself is tucked away in a 2-acre wooded valley. We're about 10-15 minutes' drive away from downtown Asheville and a $12-$15 Uber ride. Unfortunately, public transportation is not very accessible from the campground. WHAT'S NEARBY? - There are approximately a bajillion breweries in Asheville, many of which are within 5-15 minutes away. - Downtown Asheville (~10-15 minutes), West Asheville (~5-10 minutes) and the River Arts District (~5 minutes) are full of city life fun - amazing restaurants, live music, shopping, art galleries and did we mention breweries? -So much hiking! Choose your own adventure - waterfalls, mountain-top views, fog-drenched valleys, rambling rivers. There are some trails about 20 minutes away, but to get to the good stuff, you'll drive 40-90+ minutes. - White water rafting ~60-90 minutes away - Tubing down the French Broad River is the ultimate way to chill out in the sun. French Broad Outfitters, Zen Tubing and Lazy Otter are some companies that can take care of all the details for you. These are all 10-20 minutes away. OUR HISTORY We discovered this property in 2017, and quite by chance! We had finished working a seasonal job in Colorado and were on our way out to the coast to look into starting our own business. We happened to come through Asheville and casually stumbled across this property. Long-story-short, we put in a bid on the property. It was accepted, and now we have a real fixer-upper on our hands! Here's some history on the property as reported by the previous owners: The road you park on was the old county road, a long, long time ago. The couple who sold us the property is elderly, and the blue house you pass on the left on the way to park was where the wife grew up. In fact, that enormous pine tree on your right as you come up the road was the old lady's Christmas tree as a child. The jiu-jitsu gym used to be an auction house. Then it was used as a dance hall. Then it became a cabinet-making space and finally a timber frame-making space. Over the past year we've converted it into a jiu-jitsu gym, although you can still see plenty of "upcycled" remnants of previous uses, all around the gym. The campground area itself was slated to be turned into a trailer park. You can tell that the area was partially graded at one point or another. Thanks to that initiative, we have some convenient paths all around! They decided not to follow through on setting up trailer pads since it was more money than they had bargained for. After that, the space was used as a black-market dump! Luckily the city shut it down, and after two spring seasons of cleaning up back there, we're left with what you see! We're going to continue to pour our hearts, souls, creativity and probably more than just a little money into making "The Baying Hound Campground" a fun place to crash for a couple days while taking in all that is Asheville. The Claude Jean Damme Van is a converted van that permanently lives at the Baying Hound Campground. It's been lovingly painted by a local Asheville artist with the most badass dude of the 80s. Inside, you'll find a comfy mattress where you can set up your sleeping bag and pillows (please bring your own). The windows have insulated curtains for privacy and you can lock the doors while you're inside. Please note that there is NO KEY provided, so no locking it on your way out. :) Valuables should be left in your own vehicle. This is an "off grid" site with no electricity, however the recharging station and bathrooms with outlets are right next to the Damme Van. The indoor bathroom is conveniently just steps away - we provide one private bathroom with a toilet + sink, and two sinks in the hallway. There is an *outdoor* shower with hot water. Lovely, quiet, clean camp!! Everyone was respectful, the amenities were perfection, and I loved the van! The only issue we had was finding where to dispose of non-recyclables. There weren't bins where the directions said they would be. I didn't want to leave things in the wrong place.

Due to leaving Texas later than planned on Friday and bad weather on Saturday during my drive, I didn't end up making it to this campsite. Sounds like it would have been really cool! Hopefully I'll make it another time.

We had a great stay! The campground had excellent amenities — having access to a clean bathroom and a shower with plenty of hot water was a big plus. We also appreciated that firewood was available for purchase, which made it easy to enjoy a cozy campfire in the evenings. The sites themselves were very spacious, with plenty of room for multiple campers or tents without feeling crowded. The only downside was that the walkway was a bit dark at night — a few more lights along the path would make it feel safer and easier to navigate after sunset. Other than that, it was a wonderful experience, and we’d definitely come back.

This area is so cool!! The work they have put into it having its own, unique feel is evident. The shower was good and hot and the spot was fantastic. Got to say I will definitely be back

Really cool campsite!I stayed in the van and it was clean, comfortable and an all around fun experience. Bathrooms were super nice and hangout area was cozy. I recommend :-)

The camp site was cute, small so plan a tent accordingly. You have to contact people to get water turned on though. I also was left to figure out the hot water for the shower, smells like urine by the way. Then half way into my trip i learned my camp site was booked by someone else... so I had to pack up. Being just one woman with physical restrictions i wasnt able to set up camp again at the "valley sites" since you can't drive close to any sites. Not at all for any physical handicap problems. So sad to ruin my getaway..

Overall, the area was beautiful and had a really unique vibe. The valley sites felt private and peaceful, nobody else was around during our stay, so it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We especially loved having the fire pit all to ourselves and stargazing from the valley at night the stars were absolutely stunning. The showers were outdoors (not the indoor ones pictured), and while the nicer indoor shower is reserved for staff, that wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Honestly, the setup is super cool and gives it a rustic charm. A fun surprise: the roosters make the perfect natural alarm clock in the morning! The only thing to note is that WiFi doesn’t reach the valley tent sites, but it works fine up at the common area near the sinks and bathrooms. Overall, it’s a “super lit” little getaway with plenty of character.

Robert and Amanda’s land is such a unique and memorable spot. We stayed at the valley sites, which were wide open, flat, and gave us plenty of space to spread out. The whole property has a really cool hostel-type vibe — social, welcoming, and well set up — but outdoors in nature. The bathrooms and showers were clean and convenient, which made camping here feel comfortable. The location is also a huge plus, with Asheville just a short drive away. One thing to keep in mind: it’s not the most peaceful setting. Dogs barked deeply and often throughout the day and night, and there’s also a rooster that joins in. If quiet and solitude are what you’re after, that might be a drawback. But if you’re okay with some background noise, the land itself and the atmosphere make this a very cool place to stay.

What a weird, fun little camp site. The hammock site was perfect for 2 hammocks. The shared bathroom space is perfect and it was great to have access to an outdoor shower. My only complaint was that the roosters started doing their thing before the sun was up, so just be ok with a chicken alarm clock. We will be back

We liked that we were able to just pull up and sleep in our converted van. Loved that there were communal spaces outside and inside, We also appreciated having access to a clean bathroom and shower. While we didn’t actually sleep in our tent, the site for the tent was perfect, level, and had easy to follow trails leading to and from the site. There also was access to a sink and water near the campsite, as well. Everything we needed to supplement our weekend camping in Asheville. If we are ever camping in Asheville again, we will definitely stay at Baying Hound Campground.

Thanks for the wonderful stay. We were greeted by a fellow camper and found a good flat place to set up camp. Though it appeared we were in overflow camping there was plenty of privacy. Nice clean restroom. We did not meet the host as we arrived around 7:30pm and left by 7a.m.

So I like the location what bothered me was the ants that were crazy in the mulch, which is what they use for keeping the grass from growing and making paths. I also had a duffle bag go missing from the bed of my truck I don't know if it was just locals (kind of a ruff neighborhood according to gas station attendant near by) or staff. No one engaged me in conversation and after spending a month in the woods I was looking forward to some socializing which didn't happen here. The owners tho were open and honest about a network cable that came down due to a branch falling but I think I'll just stay in the woods for now on. I didn't loose anything from my truck out there.

Love this place!! This was my second time here and I will definitely be back again. Super close to everything but feels distant and secluded (while also having an amazing sense of community) 10/10 every time!
