Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake

The Ceremony Site is a beautiful area that sits on the banks of what was once the French Mine, now known as the Island Mine. The site is just a short walk down the ridge from the Tripp Mine and mineral area. The site also sits above the massive beaver dam that created the now massive and beautiful beaver lake/pond. The sounds of flowing water at this site is extremely calming. From this site you will be able to hike down the stream that leads down from the lake and feed into a slide water fall and step waterfall. Depending on the weather and vehicle you come with you may need to walk into the site about 5-8 minutes from the main parking area. 4x4 Vehicles should have no problems most of the time getting back there for unloading. If you have questions about this please let us know. We have not had the water tested at the Ceremony site: it is always flowing, however swim and bath at your own risk. There is an abundance of fish as its is surrounded by private land. Based on fish seen in the brooks feeding into it, we suspect it will have trout, bass, catfish, and more. If you do any fishing at the site please let us know, we would love to see pictures of what you catch. For the time being we ask that you release what you catch as long as the fish is healthy enough for release. More info on the Island Mine. Unlike the Tripp Mine, the French Mine is still a closed tunnel and has been flooded, where as the Tripp was converted into a open pit mine in the early 2000's. Though the main entrance of the Island Mine is flooded and just outside of our property line, we do have the majority of the mineral rich ridges and rock outcrops they tunneled into on our property. Though the area has not been worked for decades, you will find White/Rose/Smokey outcropping all around that area, as well as past test pits. With effort and some fun exploring there is definitely minerals to be discovered. To our knowledge there are no open shafts into the tunnels on our side of the property. In the event you find one we ask you immediately let us know and please do not enter. If you plan on prospecting this area please let us know, we like to actively document the minerals found on the property. The mineral and mine area is made up of crushed Mica, Rose and Smokey Quartz, White Pegmatite, Feldspar. Lots of pegmatite rocks to be broken open to find Aquamarine and Aquamarine Beryl, Garnets and more! The mine is surrounded by beautiful hardwood and softwood forests. Portalets also nearby. Site is just minutes away from Lake Warren, 15 minutes outside of Keene. The Tripp Mine is historically know for its abundance of Beryl, Aquamarine, Mica, and Feldspar. We will have multiple campsites on the property. This will be the prime location located dead center of all the mineral picking areas for easy access. That said it’s important to note, the mineral picking area are communal with all camp sites. So your campsite will be your private area, but when in the mineral picking areas you may have other campers also looking for specimens. If you are looking for a campsite that's more private and away from the mineral sites, check out our other site, especially the Ceremony Site! You will be surrounded by sparkling white gravel and mica. The area is made up of crushed Mica, Rose and Smokey Quartz, White Pegmatite, Feldspar. It is our first communal site and its path starts at the parking lot and wraps north all the way around and ends at the Garnet pit that overlooks the Tripp Mine / Pond as well as the exposed notch that was the original mine entrance. As this is a communal camping site, it is first come first serve when picking spots within the area. It is also currently walk-in only from the parking lot. As mentioned at the start, this site is pretty raw and in time will be more curated. If you like roughing it and setting up / clearing for a camp this is the site for you. It is also a great site for those who just want to come out and camp for the day. So explore it, find yourself a clearing and setup camp. You will be surrounded by sparkling white gravel and mica. Didn't camp there, but Joseph was really nice and gave us a tour of the mining area, talked about where to best find what. The Garnet sites were rustic but looked comfortable, especially with the massive fire pit.

Awsome mine! Well maintained, expanding, and a wide variety of gems, and rocks. Very scenic trails and Joe and Tom are very nice! Don't think about going! Just do it!

Joseph and his brother Tom made the visit so easy with good communication . Tom gave my wife and I a great tour of the Tripp 1 mine. We had a wonderful day exploring and digging different areas, if you like pegmatite material.

Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake
We loved camping on this site. Joseph was an awesome host, providing us with information whenever we needed it and even came out in person to show us the lay of the land. The camp was gorgeous, on the water with benches and a fire pit. The site does require 5-10 minutes of walking from where you can park your vehicle so it is worth considering that before going. For young and limber people like me and my wife, it was fine but I could see it being taxing for folks who aren't in shape or are looking for a relaxing and quick set up/breakdown. The mine was awesome, tons of cool shiny things to find and mine for yourself. Take a chisel and a hammer and have at it! We really enjoyed our stay, and will be looking to stay here again when we're in the mood for hitting some rocks.

Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake
Seclusion being our goal, we booked 2 nights at the Ceremony Site and we were not disappointed. The site is a short ride down a forest road, and has plenty of room for our 10 x 16 tent and 10ft screen house. Shady. Site faces the water with a beaver dam and a stream bordering one side. Site has a canoe, sparkly stone fire ring and some wooden benches. No table. Site is not level. No potable water or power. We were there 8/30-9/1 and water was low. But no mosquito issues. Tons of dragonflies. Short walk behind bever dam led us to the stone outcrop seen in lake photos. Host had supplied firewood at site but plenty available at main parking area along with a portapotty. Joseph took the time to show us around and give us the mines history. We enjoyed a day of rock hounding and fishing. We caught a catfish. It was worth leaving our own backyard for and we will be back.

We found aquamarine beryl and a piece of what we think is serpentine. TONS of rose quartz, smoky quartz, and mica. And a few pieces that were speckled with garnet. A great spot for someone new to gem hunting.

Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake
The ceremony site was so beautiful and peaceful! We parked at the top because we had a low clearance vehicle and the walk was perfectly manageable even with a lot of stuff. Joseph gave a very informative tour and was very helpful, with a cute dog to greet us as well! We found some aquamarine, black tourmaline, and rose quartz even being at the mine for a short time.

This was an exciting trip for us. My son loves cool rocks and wanted to camp, so this was the best of both worlds. Joseph, the owner, was very helpful in getting us set up when we first got to the quarry. Make sure to bring the right equipment/tools. I brought a large sledge hammer which was really helpful. As for camping, we stayed near the water and the road to the camp site was rough. We had two CRV and definitely damaged the undercarriage due to large ruts. Hopefully those will be fixed but if you have a vehicle high off the ground, you should be fine. The camp ground was gorgeous but it really only has two flat sports for tents. There is a great stream to the side that was lead to some fun wondering around. At night we had a red tail fox come through, making loud noises but if you know your animal calls, it's something cool to hear. Just make sure all food is stored away.

Such a cool site! Had a blast exploring the property and looking for quartz. Joe was a fantastic host and shared the background on the mine’s history and all the minerals. Also, the campsite was private and had everything we needed. Can’t wait to visit again!

Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake
We really enjoyed our stay at the ceremony site. It was so lovely to camp right on the pond. It was quiet and private. We did drive our SUV down to the site. Getting down was fine but driving out the next morning was a little iffy since it was raining and it got a little slippery in the mud. Something to keep in mind. Exploring the mine was so fun. We found a bunch of cool specimens, we could have spent more time! All in all would come back, it was great!

Joseph was so responsive and kind! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and with a little bit of work am happy to report that I was able to leave with a nice collection of beryl, aquamarine, and some schorl! I would highly recommend this site for anyone itching to try their hand at collecting minerals!

Awesome place to explore and dig for your own rocks/gems. Sites were large and fairly private. They plan to expand to add more in the near future. Hosts were friendly and helpful.

We had the ceremony campsite! It was beautiful with lots of chances to see wild life. The mine was great and we were both able to find lots of different gems. The owners were also super helpful and extremely friendly! We will definitely be going back! All together is was a great experience, 10/10 we do recommend

Ceremony Site - Island Mine Lake
Joe's land was the first time our family had used Hipcamp so we were a little unsure of what to expect. The property is a mix of woods and of course the mine. It was so peaceful and undisturbed that we weren't sure we were in the right place! We originally planned on staying at the Ceremony Site, but we moved to the Primary site due to our heavy load (this was one stop during a long vacation) and recent rains made us not want to go down the rough and muddy road. Once we were setup we were able to take in the beauty of the space. We ran into Joe a few times, but wish we could have spent more time with him learning about the land and history of the mine. All in all we had a great time and if we are ever in the area again, we'll definitely return!
