The Lower Sioux Indian Community stands out as a unique destination due to its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural surroundings in south-central Minnesota. Nestled in Redwood County, just two miles south of Morton, the Community Center is perched on the scenic southern bluffs of the Minnesota River Valley, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. Spanning 1,743 acres, the tribal land is home to approximately 145 families, contributing to a total tribal population of 982 that resides within a 10-mile service area and beyond. The name "Lower Sioux" was assigned to our band and homeland following treaties with the United States in 1851. However, we are proud members of the Mdewakanton Band of Dakota, a name that translates to "friend" or "ally" in our language. Our ancestral homeland, known as Cansa’yapi, is where our people historically marked trees with red, signifying our deep connection to the land. At the heart of the Lower Sioux Community is a profound pride in our history and culture, which shapes our identity and community initiatives. Currently, there are nearly 930 enrolled members, with more than half residing on tribal lands.
