Your host property is 13 acres between the Yellow Dog River, and Bear Lake, with frontage on both. The Yellow Dog River is a legendary trout stream, and many artists have found that the river satisfies their need for the wild. There are two cabin sites available, One overlooking Bear Lake with sunset views, and the other a cabin that was moved to the property in 1999 to preserve it. Both sites share amenities such as the outhouse, communal fire pit and water, but the cabins are not in close proximity so everyone has their privacy. They are both rustic cabins having no running water, or electricity. A futon with mattress cover is provided in each cabin along with a table and chairs. See the individual site descriptions for more details. We are 20 miles (app) north of Marquette, which is my home town.  It is a destination for bikers, skiiers, and outdoor rec folk!  There are so many things to see and do in Marquette, so make sure to plan enough time to check out the town!  Also, just six miles to our north is historic Big Bay.  A lumber town back in the day, it is full of history.  Check out the Thunder Bay Inn, where parts of Anatomy of a Murder, starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick were filmed.  Don't miss going to the Lumberjack to see where the actual murder took place, either!  You will find good eats and perhaps even some live music at either establishment. You'll also find everything you need in the way of groceries, and gas at Cram's General Store, where there's also a laundromat.  Burns landing just north of the marina has the historic Burns family home renovated in a park setting, and a public beach access to mighty Lake Superior.  This park has picnic tables and grills, and even a handicap accessible outhouse and trail to the lake. Yellow Dog falls is a short drive on Co. Road 510, and on the way be sure to climb Thomas Rock overlook.  There are new bike trails if you're into that as well!   Stay awhile.  You'll be glad you did! We strive to offer peace and serenity to our guests, and love to share these woods with those needing tranquility and respite from a busy world. In this sensitive environmental area, we have only two sites to keep traffic down, enhance our visitors experience, and to protect the wildlife here. Unplug with us, eh!

Bear Lake meets da Yellow Dog River

Tent site · Sleeps 3
Camp in the laid-back hood of the Yellow Dog River.  We hope to attract like- minded, peace seeking folks who practice low-impact camping skills, as preservation of the land is VERY important to us.  We share our beautiful yard with Hipcampers, and here, there is a screen tent for your use if it's raining, a picnic table, firewood shed, and the fire pit.   From the parking area, it is a short walk through the yard, and down some steps to the quiet tent site, which is very secluded by the river.  You'll have your own private swimming hole complete with solar water bag for showers.  Take a dip in the deeper swimming holes of the Yellow Dog River, and trek to upstream waterfalls.  Enjoy an evening fire at the communal fire pit, or just enjoy the sky show from the middle of the lake in our canoe or kayak.  You'll have just the beavers, breeze, and the owls to break the silence.  We are between a lake and a river so there will be bugs, especially in early summer, so be prepared. Magic abounds here.   One of your hosts is an artist,  so you'll see that reflected in the gardens and yard areas.    Side tours with your host as guide are also available upon request including: wild edible plant hike. Our tent site supports one tent for two people, plus two additional guests, so 4 max.  We keep it small as this is a sensitive river ecosystem, and not a spot for larger groups.

Cozy UP Sunset Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 4
Our small cabin is overlooking Bear Lake to the west and the sunsets are amazing.  It is located on a small hill, a little walk from the parking area and amenities, which include a privy, drinking water, communal fire ring, screen tent with chairs, private river access, electrice device charging station, and a picnic table.  Inside the cabin is a kitchen counter, a dining table with two camp chairs, and a futon couch that is also a bed; (you’ll be glad to know we’ve updated the mattress!) There is no electricity or running water, but a big buddy heater is available if needed. Water jugs are available to fill at our water source. There is a picnic table outside next to cabin. The Yellow Dog River is close by and provides swimming and fishing opportunities.   Bear Lake has a variety of wildlife, which you can visit from one of our kayaks or canoe, which are free of charge. There are no open fires allowed at the cabin site, due to the old growth forest in which the cabin sits. You can enjoy a campfire, however, at our communal fire pit. Out property is between a lake and a river, so there will be some bugs, especially in the early summer. Plan accordingly! When dowsing the right spot for the cabin, we found some pretty awesome energy lines, and put the cabin there!  Plan to stay awhile.  You'll be glad you did!

Gypsy Wind Cabin

100%

Cabin · Sleeps 4
Gypsy Wind is rustic and cozy with a conglomeration of artwork by various inhabitants of the cabin over the years. We call her Gypsy Wind because whe traveled to get to her home on the Yellow Dog. (Plus I love the Dan Fogelberg tune of that name!) GW was originally built by a woman who made it to live in while she built her permanent home on Eagles Nest Road, 13 miles south of here. Carol used local wood and scraps of a variety of different materials to piece together a place to call home. Many years later, she sold the property to some friends of ours, who wanted to put an addition onto the larger home, and this cabin was set to be torn down as it was in the way of that construction. I said to my friend, "you can't tear her down, she's toooo cute!" She looked us in the eyes and asked, "do you want her?" My partner and I, of course, said "YES!" That began a long process of moving her to this property, and her new chapter began. She's recently had a few upgrades, windows, and such, but remains rustic and charming. Once the cabin was on our property, it became home to several folks who were looking for respite as they formulated plans for their own property and place. We also lived in GW one summer when we renovated our home, and it was magical. The cabin is 1/3 way up our driveway, so not in the deep bush or anything, and is a short walk to the outhouse, communal fire area, etc. The cabin has a futon downstairs, and a double mattress in the loft for sleeping. There is a table and 2 chairs, and there is a kitchen area with countertop space. There is a vented propane wall heater for those cooler nights. Here, you are surrounded by a rich atmosphere for artful glamping, and we encourage artists of all kinds to find your inpiration at Gypsy Wind! Make this your base camp for all of your central UP adventures! Please note that the loft does not have rails, so no children under 9 upstairs.
