Winter Island Park is a unique destination that combines rich history with diverse recreational opportunities, making it an ideal spot for campers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Spanning approximately 54 acres, this picturesque peninsula is located on Salem Neck at the entrance of Salem Harbor. For centuries, the park and its iconic lighthouse have greeted maritime visitors, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all. Just minutes northeast of downtown Salem, Winter Island Park is easily accessible by foot, bike, Salem Trolley, car, and boat. The park offers a variety of amenities that cater to residents and visitors of all ages and abilities. Enjoy public beaches, a state-owned boat ramp, a state-financed pier, and a community sailing program. Additionally, the campground provides RV and tent sites, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area. The park is steeped in history, with archaeological sites dating back over 6,000 years. Fort Pickering, with its impressive masonry and earthworks, was established in 1643 and played a significant role in Salem's fishing trade from the 1620s to the 1740s. In the 1930s, Winter Island became home to the United States Coast Guard and Sea Rescue Station until control was transferred to the City in 1973.
