Bold Coast Base Camp | Downeast Maine At Bold Coast Base Camp, we’re not just a place to pitch a tent — we’re the launchpad for your adventures! Located on the East Machias River in Downeast Maine, we’re perfectly positioned between rivers and lakes, forests and blueberry barrens, incredible trails and beaches, not to mention the Atlantic Ocean! With so many choices just minutes away, you can play hard all day and rest under starry skies to the soothing sounds of loons, owls, and flowing water. Campsites: • Private Riverside Site – Includes an 8’ picnic table and fire ring. Accommodates up to three tents, great for families. • Additional Tent Sites – Three basic sites a short walk from the river. Amenities: • Potable water, porta-potty, and hot shower (available to all) Things to Do Nearby: • Explore charming villages and local breweries • Hike dramatic cliffside trails with ocean views • Paddle down rapids or up to waterfalls • Bike 90+ miles of the Sunrise Trail • Relax at Roque Bluffs State Park • Take a boat trip to see puffins and lighthouses Anchor here at Bold Coast Basecamp while you set off on your explorations of this wild and wonderful coast — away from the crowds, and surrounded by nature.

“Otter” - Riverfront Campsite

Just 25 feet off the East Machias river, you are graced with a pretty view and a path to the waters edge. Depending on the season and river volume, you can take a dip or swim, fish for trout, or pop in your kayak. Totally private, this site is large enough for a couple of tents in flat grassy areas within a gently rolling landscape that is surrounded by mixed woods and a few mini-trails. A friendly birch tree provides shade and ambiance over the big picnic table and there is fire ring. Guests have access to our outdoor hot & cold shower, potable water, a Webber charcoal BBQ (bring briquettes), outdoor shady seating, fields for frisbee or badminton, and a clean porta-potty - all an easy 2 minute walk to the communal area. You may be lucky enough to find the “gift” of a clam shell from one of our resident river otters at this site! Also, keep your eyes out for bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, loons, pileated woodpeckers, beaver sign, and much more…all frequently seen here! Be aware that our stretch of river is one of the few remaining prime endangered Atlantic salmon spawning ground in Maine and great care should be taken when fishing to not appeal to their species.

“Loon” Riverside Campsite

Loon is a private, riverside campsite with plenty of flat, grassy area for more than one tent (allows up to 6 people). A picnic table and fire ring are on site. You can hear but not see the river from your tent…but it is mere feet away down a short, narrow path to level ground where you can fish or take a shallow dip. Depending on the season and river volume, you can swim, fish for trout, or pop in your kayak. You will be mostly surrounded by mixed woods and just off the access trail to all amenities. Guests have access to our outdoor hot & cold shower, potable water, a Webber charcoal BBQ (bring briquettes), outdoor shady seating, fields for frisbee or badminton, and a porta-potty - all an easy 2 minute walk to the communal area. You may be lucky enough to hear the night calls of resident owls, a distant coyote family, the haunting sounds of loons, and even the occasional Bittern! Also, keep your eyes out for bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, loons, pileated woodpeckers, beaver sign, and much more…all frequently seen here! Be aware that our stretch of river is one of the few remaining prime endangered Atlantic salmon spawning ground in Maine and great care should be taken when fishing to not appeal to their species.

We have one private, camper van site that shares access to the river a short walk away. Depending on the season and river volume, you can take a dip or swim, fish for trout, or pop in your kayak. This site is large enough to park your van and for a 2-4 person tent in a flat grassy area. Guests have access to our outdoor hot & cold shower, potable water, a Webber charcoal BBQ (bring briquettes), outdoor shady seating, fields for frisbee or badminton, and a clean porta-potty - all an easy 1 minute walk to the communal area. Rebecca and Rich were such amazing hosts. They made sure I had everything I needed plus even went further to cut me wild flowers for my stay. They're so kind and helped me to have an amazing experience. I recommend Otter to anyone looking for a farm paradise by the river!

“Otter” - Riverfront Campsite
Had a lovely stay at Rebecca’s property with our dog! We booked the campsite last minute due to uncertain weather for backpacking. The host was very accommodating, even bringing us a jar of fresh cut wildflowers. My husband enjoyed fly fishing on the river which was very serene. Not too buggy this time of year, but the ants at the campsite were a little pesky! Regardless, we would definitely stay here again!

I loved camping with my van on this remote and private property. The host was incredibly attentive and helpful. I used the outdoor shower which was great! I really lovely place to stay - thank you!

This is a new Hip camp. I feel lucky to be some of the first hip campers at this sight. Hospitality by the family that runs this camp is over the top special. They have opened their property to the public, and it is a rare opportunity to experience the rivers of this region up close and personal.

Great spot to pitch your tent! Host was great with communication and everything was exactly as described. Listening to the water run in the river while falling asleep in my tent was the best! Outdoor hot shower was a huge plus as well. Thanks for sharing this cool spot….we hope to come back.

Lynette and André were excellent hosts. Great directions and a warm welcome on arrival. Their site on river was so peaceful. I will eagerly come back on my next trip downeast
