The place is green and beautiful, hosts were amazing and welcoming, facilities were on point - off grid, yet you have access to warm water when showering, nice kitchen, and you’re very close to Waipio Valley!

This place is overpriced considering the messy facilities, broken amenities (no power) and lack of hospitality. I love rustic camping, but this wasn’t priced accordingly. Sorry, but we didn’t get good vibes here. No one was there to greet us when we arrived and the few farm interns who were around weren’t friendly or really helpful. The place has great potential and looks like it may have at one point been run smoothly- but it’s now quite rundown.

Overall, we loved our stay at the farm as it was a great rainforest experience. Spending time with the woofers (very nice people), living the reality of tropical forest, wet, sunny and flowered all at the same time was a great moment. We don't regret it.
But, there are several things we didn't like.
We were surprised not seeing hosts at all, even for a small greating. We had a nice welcome from the woofers, but we didn't heard about Annick or Baxter. Perhaps just walk by to say "hi" would have been a good idea. There were not even enough mattresses in the cabana : not sure someone cared about us coming that day.
I sent a message few days before to order a basket, but I had no answer... and no basket. I told Annick one of the things that triggered my booking was the picture of Baxter on the swing with a nice cup of coffee. Without woofers, I couldn't even have smelt coffee.
Regarding the cabanas, it does the job. I guess we were not in the high mosquito season because we didn't see many. Looking at holes and open space around the roof and the door, not sure the bug screen would stop anything anyway. Living in Québec - with lot of mosquitoes too - such screens would be a nightmare. Could be a good idea to improve the finish : pretty sure workers and hipcampers would appreciate. Bulkbeds are far from beeing comfortable too (and yes, I compare to other basic bulkbeds, as you can see in WMCA (Kauai), parks or other dorms). Ladders are not easy to use : please add a step. Bulkbeds are not even safe : no fence on the upper level : a simple plank would help. Mattresses are strange too. Green ones were not even even : a big bump on one side makes it almost impossible to use. Blue ones are much better, but barely fits the bed. If it would have been a plain wood plank under, we could have used our camping mattresses instead, it would have been almost more confortable and definitely cleaner.
And last but not least, cleaning fees added over booking fees : 10$. It's a joke. I'm curious to understand what it's intended for.
Showers were with a lot of hairs, sand and leaves. Sinks also with hairs. Composting toilets had no more sawdust or ashes left, and bowl was not clean. Let's be clear, we have no issues with dry toilets - we used such toilets half our stay in Hi - but ones you provide are not exactly "clean non-smelling composting toilets". And mattresses were covered of dust or stains, both sides. 10$ is not much compared to the price of the booking, but in our case, looks like a fraud.
If it wasn't for the woofers, we definitely wouldn't have liked our stay as much. As mentioned earlier, we loved our experience, but considering all the "areas of improvements" above, we considered it overpriced. Our overall experience wasn't even half friendly as we felt it looking at the website and that was highly disapointing.

This place had horrible sleeping accommodations, we were provided with only 2 air mattresses for 3 people, one was not even functional. Good thing we had our own pads. The kitchen area was filthy and it was extremely difficult to find dishes to cook with though it was advertised that there was a complete kitchen. The showers were dark and dirty. There were no private areas for urinating, the composting toilets we were told were for number 2 only. So you were expected to pee out in the open. I will not recommend this place to anyone!

Rustic cabanas and group kitchen left much to be desired. Slept on our own camp mats, as only one air mattress was functional for three people. Little privacy for peeing, composting toilets for #2 were fine. Shared kitchen area for hipcampers not stocked with dishes/utensils/pots as advertised on website. Unsanitary.

I booked the site last minute, but the host was very accommodating. The site was beautiful. They prepared a cabin for us, but I stayed in my van. The site is an operating teaching farm with wwoofers, yogis, and other peaceful people staying on it. Great facilities including a kitchen. Iy was very peaceful.

What a magnificent spot. 3 great nights of quiet time here. I did Waipio one day and Hilo/Mauna Kea my other full day.
I somewhat agree that $50/night feels expensive, but especially if you're loading multiple people into the cabana its a great deal. Air mattresses, personal room, screened in, roof. It's better than camping so priced higher than a campsite.
I wish I would have more of the hosts, but it was over the winter holiday which is probably their quiet time of year.

The site has a lot of potential, well located, beautiful orchard, nice cabins, good internet, well equipped kitchen, clean toilets and nice staff. More then you can hope from a camping site!!
The main problem is that it looks like they don’t have enough workers. The inflatable mattresses were VERY dirty, we had to wash it with our own washing cloth and many wipes to keep our sleeping bag/pillow clean. The kitchen was well equipped but dirty and was a mess.

We stayed two nights over there and we had a great time. Baxter was awesome he showed us around, gave us some fruits and was always available to answer questions. The place is really well located and the cabana was really clean.

Our family of 3 absolutely loved staying in the cabanas at Big Island Farms. It was just what we needed during our vacation. Daniela greeted us upon arrival and was so welcoming, sharing her positive vibes with us. We enjoyed the farm so much that our son is ready to come back to stay!

Seems that there was an issue that hip camp did not contact the hosts about our arrival (according to host, this is the third time that happened to them). Fortunately, someone eventually arrived and helped us get situated. Beautiful place, would gladly return!

We had a great time at the farm! Our bunkhouse/cabana was clean and the mattresses were fully inflated. At the community kitchen area we had access to a refrigerator/freezer with cold water and ice, a propane stovetop/oven combo, coffee machine, as well as free WiFi and chargers for our electronics. This morning we were offered macadamia nuts, bananas, papaya and starfruit, before heading on a nice hike around the property. We left just shy of 11a and drove a couple miles north to the Waipio Valley Lookout and then headed south for Hilo.

We stayed one night in a cabana. I knew it wouldn't be very fancy or anything but in my opinion the price is really expensive for what you get. The manager on site was very nice and helpful though
So first the cabana: air mattress, so not very comfy. no blankets, towels, lights, curtains,... very very basic. The kitchen; there's a huge kitchen that we can't use, we can use the one outside but it's not really equipped. There's one burner and that's it, the fridge probably hasn't been cleaned in a while. Plus no mosquito net protecting the area, stayed there for 5min and got so many mosquito bites (even with repellent on me). We didn't take a shower, not very clean and not inviting. I love camping but that was a bit too much
The location is quite good and it is a really beautiful place! Surrounded by so many trees and plants. But the price should be lower or they should make it a little nicer

The cabana was exactly what we expected, rustic and very similar to camping. It was nice to have a shower and kitchen for cooking simple meals. We enjoyed playing with the farm cats and walking around the beautiful farm.

This is a place for a most interesting stay. It's definitely a rustic setting on a working permaculture farm. The hosts are a bunch of passionate and dedicated people working at their plan of growing acres of food. If you are at all interested in a different side of Hawaii, away from tourists, don't miss this place and all it has to offer.

Lovely place to stay for a night. Kitchen, laundry, hot showers, and potable water on-site. Free bananas for breakfast when we were there. Bed was pretty comfortable, the only problem was that the (air) mattresses are pretty squeaky/noisy when you move around. Also, bring your own pillow.

This was a great place to stay close to Waipio Valley. Baxter is a kind soul and a great host. The cabanas are simple with bunk beds and little else, but they are fully screened and have air mattresses and solar led lights. They are a short 5 min hike uphill from parking, but Baxter was there when we arrived and have us and our stuff a ride up. We enjoyed hanging out with the wwoofers and hiking to the waterfalls. Plus hot showers!

It's hard to know where to begin with how incredible this place is. We were only able to stay one night and I was so sad to leave! This site is a permaculture based farm that hosts interns from every corner of the world. The crew that was there to greet us (preparing for students to arrive in a few short weeks) was so incredibly inviting and fun to be around. You are just a short distance from the adorable town of Honakaa and there are endless activities and sites to see in this area. We were asked to park at the entrance to the farm which is just a short distance walk up to the main property. There were ADORABLE grazing goats at the entrance that we had a really hard time leaving alone. They loved to be loved!
The grounds themselves are SO gorgeous. We were lucky enough to get a tour from one of the seasonal volunteers who educated us on permaculture farming and sustainability practices. We got a few insider tips on what the next "kale" will be! We even got to enjoy a plate of edible plants that we picked on our tour.
We were incredibly comfortable in our Cabana. It was clean and even had an air mattress! Our sleeping bags and pillows were barely needed. The Cabanas are screened so you can fall asleep peacefully listening to incredible jungle sounds all night.
There is a covered deck and kitchen area that has a cooking stove, utensils, coffee maker and really anything you may need to cook up your own food. Just next to the kitchen area is an adorable building that has showers and sinks for cleaning up. My shower was hot! The composting toilets on site were also very clean and comfortable to use.
Do yourself a favor and stay at the Banana Cabanas! You will not regret it. I truly hope to return someday.
