Originally a 10-acre island formed from materials excavated during the creation of the Lake Worth Inlet in 1918, Peanut Island earned its name when the state permitted its use as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. Although those plans were abandoned in 1946, the name has endured. The island is renowned for its excellent fishing and snorkeling opportunities in the crystal-clear waters, making it a favorite destination for water sports enthusiasts.
