Glacier Mountain Camp
If you have the proper vehicle (high clearance and 4WD) and want to be secluded with AMAZING 360 views, then this spot is for you! Enough hiking trails (technically Jeep trails) to keep you occupied. AND THE STARS!!! 🌠🌟🌛 Highly impressed. Will absolutely be back.

What a wonderful surprise to our trip in Late July 2020. We had another location planned out in Souther Colorado and it was just too hot, so we headed north and at the last minute secured this camping site. Christopher answered several questions the moments before I booked it, was prompt and informative. Now comes the surprises... only because we booked at 5pm and headed to the site straightaway. I’m usually a planner and there was no time to research the area, so we just went. The reviews said we needed a high clearance 4x4 vehicle to get there and we had that, and are glad we did. It is located on a Well known forest service road near Montezuma on the OHV trails known as Saints’ John and deer path up and over Glacier Mountain. THe camp is on the Saints’ John side just up at the tree line. Not a lot of wind break or shade in the actual camp site, but the forest and mining relics are right there to explore. We arrived after the sun had set behind the mountains to the west, and it began to rain hard. We waited it out and surprisingly the ground at that elevation dried out almost instantly. We had a large family tent with a footprint of 10x 13 and it was a little hard to find a flat spot without boulders but we managed. The real treat was discovering the OHV trails that went beyond the campsite upon leaving after 2 nights there. We saw mountain goats and stood on glaciers, traveled over amazing mountain peaks and ridges, and meet many awesome people all on their own journey in the mountains. My two young sons and I had an amazing adventure there, We will be back again soon.
Things to consider: You are quite a ways from a town with a store or gas station. Fuel and stock up before you get to Keystone on the way to Montezuma. Plan to contain food and trash in your sealed vehicle, there are bears and other wildlife up there to share this site with. There is no cell service at the camp, but a steep drive to the top of Glacier Mountain (20 min?) will find a weak signal. That being said, be sure to download driving instructions and maps ahead of time. Also look up OHV and trail maps of the area so you know what else there is to do while there.

Very exhilarating drive up to the site! Definitely need a 4x4 truck or ATV to get up to the very top safely and quick! It was an amazing experience once up top! The views were insane and beautiful! Would definitely recommend to people who are wanting to wake up to mountains and chill breeze!

One of the most breathtaking spots I have ever seen. The road is no joke, so definitely have 4wd + good clearance on your vehicle. Host is great and answered all my questions promptly. Would absolutely camp here again!!!

We loved the Glacier Mountain Camp site. It was an adventure getting there but worth it. We loved the views and the private aspect of the site. We didn’t see any other campers but there were a couple off road vehicles that passed by.

Fantastic site with amazing views! As previously stated 4 wheel drive is a must. I made it with a stock chevy Colorado only scraping a couple of times on rocks. Was a bit nerve racking for a firts timer overlanding like myself. Site is private with just the occasional atvs or dirt bikes going by on the trail. You really feel like youre on top of the world. Directions were as decscribed although i was lucky to have my gps continue to work all the way to the site. If i ever come back to Colorado ill look to stay again.

Getting there Mid July stock 4Runner with entry level off-road knowledge and skill:
Road to site is narrow, but has areas to pull off. We didn’t have any issues with oncoming traffic. The difficult part of the road we’re the 6” to 12” loose rocks and navigating the right line to minimize under scrapes. We saw about 10 vehicles on the road each day.
We took our stock 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road with the tires air-ed down to 20 PSI and drove the whole way up in 4 wheel low with no struggles. We did get the occasional rock scrape underneath.
The site:
The view is epic. We were pretty exposed to wind and rain when the storm hit, but we slept in the vehicle so that didn’t bother us too much.
We found the site to be a little narrower and closer to the road than expected from the photos, but we only had a few vehicles pass while we were there, and the view is well worth the trip up.

Site was amazing, awesome views! Goats greeted us straight away. Road in is the real deal. I haven’t four wheeled like that for quite a while, doable but be prepared. Really appreciate the opportunity, meant the world to us to have a solid place to go. Will be back. Thank you!!

Very cool campsite at 11,400 ft elevation. 15 mountain goats came down into our campsite and stayed for 16 hours. very, very cool. definitely need a 4 wheel drive w/ high clearance. The views were awesome.

Loved this place! We loved being above the treeline. There were plenty of places to explore. We took advantage of the all around views. We were chasing the sunlight with our chairs! Haha. Also, if you go down to the trees, you'll find places to set up a hammock. We felt like we were at the edge of the world.
Yep! There is a family of goats. They hung out with us the whole time. And when we ventured down too the valley, they were looking down at us checking on us.
Once you cross the creek, the road gets more technical. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes once you get past the creek
As for weather, don't depend too much on weather apps. This place has a system of its own. Expect it to be a little colder than shown in weather apps. And rain is unpredictable. Be prepared. Overall, I would recommend this place. We haven't ventured into BLM camping, so this is the next best thing. You won't regret it.

This reservation instantly became my favorite camping spot. These views are incredible and the spot feels so private. We made it up the road just fine in a stock 4Runner and saw plenty of stock Jeeps go further than us - it’s a slow and careful climb but 100% worth those views. We saw some wildlife, too - mountain goats and a fox! Communicating with Chris was easy and efficient, and his directions on the reservation confirmation were spot on. 10/10 recommend!

THIS PLACE WAS EPIC!!!!! We came in at night and the 4wheeling was so cool in and out but the best part was waking up in the morning on the top of a mountain, incredible! We saw a whole family of big horn sheep right up close too!! Its moderately difficult to drive up for sure, you'll need a 4WD with good clearance and tires without a doubt, and Christopher told us that right way via text. I have a 2019 Wrangler with a 4" lift and 35" tires and it crawled up the trials without a problem. Overall very amazing experience. Highly recommend to anyone into overlanding and camping on the top of a mountain!!!

Holy.. the road was insane. We definitely did not make it up to the campsite. We have a gmc envoy and we bottomed our multiple times. Took 2 hours to go 1.5 miles and we still had 1 mile to go. Definitely need LOTS of clearance and good tires. The host was incredibly accommodating and refunded us. I would love to come back and backpack in because the area was beautiful!

Wonderful experience. Views are amazing. Very high altitude so make sure that you are acclimated. 4x4 is a must. The road is very much an “off-road” with challenges that a regular car cannot handle without damage. You can definitely hike in the area if you want and the herd of goats make regular visits to the site. The site itself is very private. Once the occasional off road enthusiasts are done for the day, you will be the only humans for miles around. Do not expect any amenities. This is a bluff in the middle of the mountains so bring anything and everything that you may want or need with you. We were very happy with our stay.

Incredible camping trip! Had a group of 5 people, and two dogs. The drive in was not bad at all with our Toyota Tacoma. Lots of 4wd traffic - ATVs, dirtbikes, and many Jeeps, but the camp site is off the road enough that it wasn't a problem. Just be prepared for mountain goats! Everywhere! They come in the morning when the sun's up and leave before the sun's down. They were not a problem for us (they were very afraid of our huskies), but they lingered around the site each day. The best thing about this place is the nightsky. The milky way was bright and easy to see!

The camp site is amazing. 100% a Subaru or CRV cannot make it up to the site. I read that warning in the description and thought ppl were just being cautious. We had 2 cars and I tried to take our Subaru up and thankfully we had a 4Runner as I had to park our Subaru at the bottom and put our stuff in the other car to make it to the site.

Our stay at Glacier Mountain was simply beautiful! It was very quite, peaceful, and had an absolutely stunning view from our campsite. There was quite a bit of dead wood in the surrounding area that was perfect for firewood. During our one night stay, we saw a fox and a small deer.
From our experience, we had no cell phone service once we started the drive along road 275. Be sure to follow Chrisopher's directions carefully and snag a few bundles of wood in town (Keystone) before heading up - just in case!
The ride up was a bit difficult. There were a few smaller streams that we had to pass through. I'd suggest a vehicle with very high clearance and slightly narrow in width to avoid tree branch scratches. Such as a Jeep or four wheeler. Don't fret - the ride is worth it!

Amazing view! A beautiful site for sure. We loved our time up there! We absolutely recommend this site. We drove a Yukon Denali and the ground clearance was fine, but did have to help push a Subaru up a hill because they got stuck...

Christopher was very helpful and contacted me well ahead of our trip to make sure we were prepared for the road to the camp.
We drove our 2018 Honda Ridgeline. With careful driving, we were OK on clearance, but unfortunately, I forgot to put it into Low gear and overheated the transmission on the way in, about halfway between the first stream crossing and the site. Whoops, my mistake.
Since we arrived in the evening, we decided to set up camp in the valley that was on the way to the site. The next day we hiked up to the actual site and enjoyed the views. I think the Ridgeline could have made it up the rest of the way, but we already had our tent set up, so we just stayed at our existing site.
The whole area was beautiful and the site itself was well-maintained.

Glacier Mountain Camp
First things first, it was definitely as hard to get there as both Christopher and other campers have stated. Multiple stream crossings, places where our truck barely had enough ground clearance, and places where the road/trail were pretty narrow and the trees and brush were sweeping down the sides of our vehicle. If you aren't okay with potentially scratching the paint on your vehicle I'd be cautious camping here. But the views were absolutely astounding and that might be an understatement. The site was a little smaller than we had expected, but still enough area to park the vehicle, a place to setup the tent, area around the campfire, and area to setup camp chairs to lounge. There was more traffic (Jeep tours, ATV's, and various other off-roading vehicles) passing by the site (especially on the weekend) than we had thought there would be. The road/trail you use to get the the site is also how you access the 4x4 trails that wind through the mountains that you're camping on. But by Sunday afternoon pretty much all that traffic had cutoff. No one really stopped at our site while driving by, most just waved as they rolled on. The site is fairly exposed and can be windy, so use extreme caution if you decide to have a fire. I would recommend weighting your tent down and using all stakes or guy-lines on your tent while here because of the wind too. We had to use rocks and tree branches because I didn't want to bend stakes trying to anchor them into the rocky ground. We enjoyed our getaway but next time we'd probably book it for more dates during the week to be a little more secluded than any dates over a weekend. The remote-ness adds to some incredible celestial views at night too. If you're able, download an astronomy app on your phone for your stay (we used Sky Guide).
