This place is special. If you’re looking to get up close with herds of cattle, alpaca, horses, mules, farm dogs, geese and a massive pig this is the spot. Be prepared for lots of night noises- the animals talked all night long. We had great weather and the place to ourselves which was a treat but this farm would be great for groups. Our dog was off leash running with the farm dogs most of the time- and you could smell it on her. Alan’s dogs were very gentle, but they have free range. There was also a comically large pig wandering about. If Alan asks if you want to feed the herd, say yes! We witnessed a minutes-old calf getting up on her feet, while we slinging hay. It was a very cool experience. We would definitely come back for a visit.

As a solo female camper, I couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming or unforgettable experience. The ranch itself stretches across 300 acres of pure peace and wide-open beauty—complete with cows, donkeys, and even a sweet little calf that stole my heart (and got its bottle from me!).
The mornings—or, more accurately, the very early mornings—were accompanied by peacocks and roosters who seem to think 3:30 AM is sunrise. Instead of being annoyed, I laughed every time. It’s part of the ranch’s charm: nature doing whatever nature wants.
The highlight of my stay was joining the host to feed the cattle. I never realized how vocal cows could be until I was surrounded by a chorus of them, each with their own personality and voice. It was grounding, beautiful, and completely mesmerizing.
If you’re craving solitude, connection with animals, and a slice of real country life, this place is a must. It’s safe, peaceful, and full of small, magical moments that remind you how good it feels to slow down and just be.

Loved, loved, loved the meadow, the ponds, feeding hay to the herds, picking up carrots to feed the two horses and two so lies. Alan is a kind man who adopted 7 dogs so our two felt right at home off leash. The farm is >300 acres. We’lll be back!

I had a wonderful weekend at the farm. It’s a peaceful and beautiful place with cows, dogs, lamas and many more. My three pups had a blast running around and getting to know everyone. The owner is a wonderful person and I will for sure be back to camp here.

If I lived in a city down there I'd be bringing my kids to this place. I was just passing through. At night you can hear the baby dinosaurs crying out from the trees. It's amazing...

Gorgeous location and very friendly people. My spouse and I enjoyed the fire pit and the lake that we could use the owners canoes on. Very thankful that such a place exists and would love to come camp again.

My wife and I loved our camping experience here at the Walden Ranch! Our dogs made friends with their potbelly pigs and had a great time. The owner is kind and a truly caring host. The facilities are also all in working order and the site is kept very clean.

This place is everything the other positive reviews say it is. We were very impressed. The camping area is easy to find. There’s no “camping spaces” that you’re assigned like in other campgrounds; the whole of the camping area is open to wherever you want to pitch your tent. There were two other larger groups there while we were there, but no one is crowded and you don’t feel like anyone is on top of you. The ranch dogs are super friendly and sweet (and good with other dogs). There’s multiple canoes and a paddle boat if you want to take them out. We were pleasantly surprised by the wooden countertop next to a sink with running water right off the big fire pit group area, which was super convenient for food prep for cooking on a campfire. There’s also running water over by the bathroom (flush toilets). Our favorite part was probably the hayride where we got to go out and help feed the cattle herds. If you’re thinking about camping here, just do it. You won’t be disappointed.

Walden Ranch is a beautiful, peaceful shady spot. There were peacocks and guinea fowl wondering around as well as some very friendly dogs. We will definately return when we pass through the Stockton area.

Nice and quiet camp site for a family with kids. Host is great, they greeted us, led us to the camp site and gave us tons of woods for the fire pit. Would recommend this place to anyone.

This was our third time staying here within the last 5 months. We can’t state any further how much this place has enlivened our camping experience with our dog, and family. We will come back every year! We are so lucky to have come across “Alan’s Grove” this owner is so amazing!

Walden’s Ranch was amazing for families! We tent camped 2 nights with a couple other families, and we all agree that we want to go back! Alan took us on a hayride to feed the cattle; we used the paddleboat and canoes on the small lake (life jackets and paddles inside a black container near the canoes); we fed the horses, donkies, and llamas carrots and apples (llamas prefer baby carrots); enjoyed the many chickens, roosters, and peacocks roaming around the farm; the pot bellied pig came out the last morning and was very friendly - likes scratches on her head! Also the frogs and crickets sang beautiful melodies all night!! Definitely recommend! P.S. Walden’s Ranch is a top 15 tent camping site on Hipcamp for 2025 =)

It’s quiet and spacious at this site. I love dogs and there are several that come and greet you and hang out. There are cows, alpacas and I saw at least one horse and a little pony. Last year there were two donkeys but I didn’t see them this time. Also there are peacocks running around making funny calls and chickens free range feeding nearby the site. It’s lots of fun and my kids love it. There are lots of trees for shade on hot days. I found the shower but it in a spot that doesn’t have privacy but I suppose you can put on a bathing suit.

It was so enjoyable staying at Alan’s grove alongside this beautiful private lake full of critters and the sweetest pack of doggies on the land. Alan was very sweet and welcoming as we unloaded our camping gear, even getting us extra firewood for our bonfire that night! We got to canoe, fish for catfish, and even visit Lake Camanche (30 minutes away) for a fun swim day during the hot day. We brought our pitbull and she had a blast playing with the other dogs and getting to be off leash the whole time—a true paradise for her! We are excited to come back!

Alan is a very pleasant host. The place is a gem, perhaps could be better maintained, tho. Downsides: the neighbor’s hog who often comes by the campsites and is large and intimidating, only showers are open air and only cold water. All-in all, we had a GREAT time and I would definitely return with the family again.

Amazing campsite, you can really tell how much effort the owner puts in. From the many spots to camp, to the lights hung up, to the games outside. How much he cared was evident. He even came out to say hello, make sure we found a good spot, and let us know about the many things we could do (a beautiful walk to a pond, showers!!!, even canoes,) and was all around such a sweet person. Had such a great experience and would highly recommend

Such a surprising spot tucked deep Into orchards and farmlands. Fire circle, picnic tables, like an old scout campground. Fun pond to canoe and many animals. Wish we could have stayed longer.
