The Smith River Complex Fire took our property on August 16th, 2023. Updates on our progress here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fucaTaOwf5c PLEASE NOTE, 4WD is required in order to access the sites. Please message me if you have any questions prior to booking. Sustainable Ecovillage is an off-grid project for sustainable living. If you are looking for a unique experience and up for rustic accommodations among goats, chickens, a permaculture food forest with a few off-grid perks, we welcome you to join us in our mountainous, wilderness paradise! Our 160-acre property is surrounded by about a million acres of National Forest. Our neighborhood is all made of trees, huckleberry bushes and animals. We love it here. It is very remote, peaceful, and functionally sustainable in its focus. The closest neighbor is a Buddhist Hermitage about a mile up the forestry road. Also, supposedly, Sasquatch live here! (it is the epicenter for documented sightings). Most visitors to the area are interested in spending time in the redwoods – we are about 30-45 minutes from the nearest entrance to Jedediah Smith Park, home of Stout Grove and other beautiful redwood hikes. Driving into Crescent City, about 45-60 minutes, winds you right through the "gentle giants" on your way to or from Redwood National Park. We are self-sufficient, and sustainable in a relatively primitive set-up, especially after the fire this year. It's mountainous and remote, and we have a community agreement about no smoking (of any kind) on our land.

Sleep under the stars, surrounded by forest, while soaking up the green energy from our primitive plant greenhouse cathedral ! It's an earth sheltered 200 ft long by 15 feet wide greenhouse space with a sleeping space in the far southeast corner. A diverse flora including avocado, mango, lemon, lime kiwi, grape, passion fruit, and vegetables are grown for our community. Meditation stool overlooking a waterfall and stocked fish pond. It's not that fancy, but it's a unique experience at our Sustainable Ecovillage

Hobbit Hole @Sustainable Ecovillage

Earth house · Sleeps 2
Approximately 260 sq ft, earth sheltered structure within our permaculture-based, sustainable, off-grid village. It is one of a kind in architecture and theme with colored bottles built into the wall, stained glass windows, center tree pillar with atrium windows above, and medieval Celtic Cross above the Hobbit Hole (outside and atop) give it a Hobbit Church feel. We are an atypical airbnb, a simple (primitive) Hobbit Hole within forested valley of the Siskiyou Mountains, 5 miles deep in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest, part of a remote, off-grid ecovillage that includes a few other cabins, chickens, goats, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture design. This place is not for everyone -- you kinda have to be into this kind of stuff-- There is no key or lock to the Hobbit Hole. Someone will probably be there to show you about the common areas -- otherwise, just make yourself at home. The Hobbit House is quite private and the furthest away from amenities in our Village. Our dining hall, bath house (with shower, bidet, and fancier indoor toilet) is about 200 yds away. There are plenty trails to hike, a swimming hole, and garden benches and porch swings to enjoy the view. The host (Dan) is sometimes around, sometimes not, often busy doing stuff, so it's all pretty straight forward check in yourself (no key or lock) make yourself at home, community areas are obvious. But there's almost always someone around (other residents, intern woofers) to answer questions if you have them. There is a wood-fired sauna (usable November thru May), large organic garden and edible landscaping, chicken and goat pens, other animal residents include dogs, cats, chickens, fish and frogs. From your cabin, you are welcome to wander at will amongst our 160 acres of mostly steep, forested land, and enjoy the streams and waterfalls leading into Little Jones Creek. A stroll down the" driveway" and back along the forestry road is a beautiful hike in itself, where you could easily spend all day in the company of only quiet woodland creatures.

Rustic TreeHouse @ Sust. Ecovillage

Treehouse · Sleeps 2
Sleep high in a tree overlooking a mountainous, forested valley -- part of a remote, off-grid "village," We are an atypical airbnb, a simple (primitive) treehouse overlooking a forested valley of the Siskiyou Mountains, 5 miles deep in Northern California's Six Rivers National Forest, part of a remote, off-grid ecovillage that includes a few other cabins, chickens, goats, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture design. This place is not for everyone -- you kinda have to be into this kind of stuff. READ full description, please Our property encompasses 160 acres of pristine natural wilderness in Northern California's beautiful Smith River canyon - the only un-dammed river in the state. Spring-fed streams, teeming with wildlife, from cute caterpillars to black bears. Accessible only by forestry road from scenic Redwood Hwy (CA-199,) this is an opportunity to experience our responsible natural relationship with Mother Earth. Amenities: ---Two beds are small (Twins) so yes, four people can squeeze in, but more appropriate for two. You're welcome to bring a air mattress and fit as many as you like : ) ---•Lighting / Electricity / Heat: The treehouse does not have electricity or a heat source-- it's in a tree; we recommend that you bring your own lights. There's plenty of blankets and sleeping bags to keep you warm. Getting here -- the road coming in is just a forestry road -- thousands use it ever year without mention. It's incidental. But you may notice some will comment about it being scary for them. It's in the mountains (1000 ft elevation to 1500 ft) steep terrain, gravel roads. Any vehicle gets here fine (no 4wd needed). But, yes, sure, if you have a very low clearance vehicle like some Mustang models, it might scrape on our bridge or somewhere on our driveway (which is bumpier than the F road) but it will also scrape going into Wal-Mart. SO.... if you're a city city person OR you might be scared of mountainous forestry roads, better to book a motel six in town. The Smith River Complex fire swept through here in August of 2023, you'll notice some of the damage to the forest on your way in, and the healing, greening, has already begun.
