Earthsip Solarium @ Sust Ecovillage
This is a rugged location up a long dirt road. The description of the site is fairly accurate so I knew what to expect. The site was in Smith River Complex fire a few years back, and they've done a good job of rebuilding but the land does still show the ravages of that fire. The driving directions were helpful & accurate.
I chose the Solarium as it seemed the most comfy & accessible. It was bit challenging as dogs are allowed on the site, but not in the garden portion of solarium and there was no pathway around to the sleeping area at the far end so my dogs could not be near me. Thankfully they could kennel in my car, but it was not great for just hanging in my sleeping space with my companion animals.
The kitchen, composting toilet and other common spaces are up a steep dirt road only accessible with 4WD, so be prepared for that. Parking was a bit challenging on the edge of a steep slope--I had a difficult time turning around on the one lane road.
As a farmer and permaculturist I was quite curious about the history of the site and current projects, but the host was not super forthcoming or friendly with information. Thankfully a couple WWOOFers felt like chatting. There is a website about the place that I didn't find until afterwards, but it was informative. Search for "sustainable ecovillage."
On the positive. Very affordable and unusual. Possibly tons of hiking trails if that is what you are looking for and overall dog friendly.

I had a reservation for 2 nights. On the first night we just missed the time to make it within daylight and as the host had warned about getting lost in dark, we decided to stay elsewhere. On day 2, we made it to the Forest Route from highway 199 and was stumped! It was fully a gravel road going uphill with some steep climbs and we didn’t have a 4wd! So the pictures on the post were very misleading and lot of route information was only shared after booking by then it was non cancellable. I was terrified to drive up this route and gave up after about 1.5 miles as we had to drive up 3 more miles in this nail biting manner which was too risky just to get there.
Although the listing doesn’t share any route pictures and doesn’t warn users without 4wd, please beware after reading this review. I gave up midway as I felt it was totally unsafe and turned around, the remaining way back was also very bad and horrifying. I would never again go back even though the tree house picture looks lovely! I literally thought I don’t want to die getting there - because the forest road is a one way and you don’t even know if there’s a car on the other side - so with no way to turn around but to back down on a up slope, it is indeed scary as hell!
I wish I had read those reviews who faced this issue. Pictures are misleading!

We loved staying at the solarium! Super unique space, and really fun drive up the hills (100% need 4 wheel drive, they’re not kidding). 10/10 recommend!

Host needs to update the information on the actual listing. He sneaks info into the directions that you receive after you book. He was not responsive & rude. Didn’t actually stay bc we didn’t feel safe w the info we received and timing we would be there. Had we had that info we would not have booked. I.e. do not arrive in the evening, no cell service/electricity or lights and a fire band, He did not refund us. We were on a road trip without the needed materials but thought they were provided. Photos are misleading.

Staying in the greenhouse was EPIC!! Highly recommend. Gorgeous plants, nice couch, exercise area, sink, and bedroom included, + hammocks. Only thing I would say is because the doors were open and the ambiguous layout of the camp, and we had some visitors as we were leaving in the morning, probably assuming it was open to just look around. The drive in is pretty long through the mountains, make sure to have AWD/4WD and arrive with light. Very unique and special adventure 😇

I used the provided directions to get to the site, but was greeted by an endless dirt road up a beautiful mountain. I never found the camp site. Didn't have cell service signal. Had to backtrack an hour to get signal and find a gas station. Had to sleep in my car instead. Host was stern in his reply about it being my fault I couldn't find the site location.

An experience that should be had by all. Dan was a gracious host with a spirit full of peace. He was helpful and willing to go far above and beyond to accommodate myself and my 2 young children when we encountered issues during our trip. His kindness and calm energy was easily absorbed and we left with renewed faith that there is still some folks out there with coo8ouh luulylgrbemmmee xexmpassion and brotherly love. A must see for those who have a desire to learn about, or passion for a sustainable lifestyle. Hats off to you and your vision Dan.

This was such a cool stop on our roadtrip! Right off the highway and such a beautiful property. The Solarium was exactly as described and as someone who grew up working in her family’s greenhouse, I felt right at home!

High clearance all wheel or 4wd necessary. I drove a 2wd van and it was a really rough road. I made it but do not recommend following in my footsteps there. It’s a cool site, but no one greets or talks to you. There’s a note in the room that we could have a tour but it doesn’t say where the host is and no one ever stopped by. This place could be really something if they cleaned the junk up around the grounds. It was hard to tell where we could explore and what was private. Parking is less than ideal, there’s a driveway right in front of the hobbit house but for some reason there’s boulders and a sign not to park there so you have to park down the hill a bit. A few tweaks in this place would really make it incredible. It was cool, just not spectacular. Maybe they’re still recovering from the fire but just organizing the junk everywhere would be nice. The solarium and garden was super cool but again, we weren’t sure if we were supposed to be in there since it had a bed in a room at the end of it. Overall I’d say it was worth the experience but definitely could have been better.

Hobbit Hole @Sustainable Ecovillage
The Hobbit Hole is a fun whimsical place to spend a couple nights. Loved the mosaic art in progress on the bath-house nearby. It is as described, rugged & rustic, a bit rough around the edges. We had a battery operated fan that kept the place from being stuffy. The adorable round door sadly doesn’t shut well. The sink drains under the counter not sure why. Maybe make sure the toilet bucket is empty when expecting a guest. Still we found the experience inspiring. With only a one night stay we didn’t mingle or meet the animals.

My group stayed in the Solarium and we had a pleasant experience! We recommend bringing your own bedding or hammocks to avoid mice or bugs. Bring insect repellent. Besides that, it is a fun remote experience.

We stayed in the Solarium, an impressive greenhouse structure that follows the natural landscape contours and makes a striking architectural statement. The accommodation was basic but comfortable and well-suited to the ecovillage setting.
The drive through the area shows the ongoing recovery from Oregon's wildfires, though the site itself has plenty of greenery returning alongside the natural healing process. The river at the entrance offers a nice spot for a refreshing dip.
The residents were welcoming and generous. During our stay, we observed that the community takes preparedness seriously and has regular discussions about self-sufficiency and security - this seems to be an important part of their philosophy.
Earthsip offers a unique architectural experience in a recovering natural environment.

Unique experience. Impressed by the sheer size of the greenhouse i stayed in. It does cool off at night and need to walk through the long passage to access your room. Worth it tho. And there are some frog friends at night....so bring your earplugs if not used to the sound:)

A totally unique and beautiful space. The view is amazing and the solarium is very peaceful, with a fountain burbling and frogs croaking.
Looks like they're still rebuilding from the last wildfire, so some broken windows and roof panels but none in the sleeping area.
The drive up is daunting without a truck or SUV.

Very eco friendly! We had a great time during our stay, Dan was very friendly and one of the seasonal assistants, Sean, was super helpful and welcoming. You can tell that things will continue to grow and improve, along with the forest coming back to life after the devastating fire.
One pro tip: do not use the fireplace if you stay in the Solarium unless they finish venting the chimney…
Although the fire creates a nice ambiance and the healing sounds are wonderful, we smoked ourselves out accidentally, even with the door open.
The community kitchen is a pleasant start to the day with the gathering of other guests and conversations with people from all different walks of life, but one appreciation; nature!
Pay attention when they say “prepare for a camping trip” when packing. Although they are more than willing to help; town is about an hour away and it’s best to be over prepared than under prepared.
Lastly, a good vehicle with all wheel or four wheel drive is definitely in your best interest but a necessity is a vehicle with a good clearance height (suv, truck, etc)
Enjoy your stay in the beautiful escape from the mundane box life of cities and towns.

If you want an adventure this is your place to stay! Driving out on the service road to find the property was a fun adventure. I would suggest a 4-wheel drive car but its not required. Remember to turn at the smiley face! Service is very limited but I got a little bit of service with Verizon out at the property. What Dan has created in a difficult landscape is spectacular! Very fun to walk around and see all of the amazing structures he has created. I would highly recommend bringing a lantern and definitely a head lamp or two. We stayed in Half-Moon and had a little wood burning fireplace inside to keep us warm. Even when the fire went out in the middle of the night we were cozy and warm since he has insulated the cabin very well.

Hobbit Hole @Sustainable Ecovillage
This place was dreamy in some sense—a forest escape near some amazing botanical sites that seems to have been well defended during the recent fires. We met two friendly people and two friendly dogs but for the most part the land was eerily empty when we visited, which would have been fine but the place lacked clear instructions for how to access the advertised amenities. Significant drawbacks are that the room had a mouse problem (we lost much of our food), was thick with smoke from poor ventilation, and had no lighting (lots of burned up candles and a soggy box of matches). We arrived dirty and excited to shower only to find that there was no hot water and no instructions on how to use the sauna advertised. The host also did not respond to questions. The place has some charm but I would suggest being more honest and clear in the description so that people show up prepared!

The rustic treehouse is true to its name. My expectations were way off. I cannot emphasize enough how rugged and actually dangerous the road is that one must drive on to get to the treehouse. It's a logging access road that is narrow, no railing and winds around a mountain with a steep drop off. If someone were to be on the road going the other way, we would both plummet down the incline. The " ecovillage" is no more than a few thrown together buildings, most of them not accessible or open to me. Only a truck with 4wd should attempt to visit this space. I was expecting a community of sorts, instead no one made contact during my stay. The couple people I saw kept their distance. The host never responded to my messages or greeted me while i was there. The strict no fires no smoking policy meant intense cold, no electricity or wifi or cell service either. there was talk of a suana opening soon.... that would be huge I hope they complete that and make it available. I ended up leaving a day early. When I contacted the host about the situation, how I was expecting something much different, he said it wasn't that bad and refused to give me a partial refund. The landscape is gorgeous though. I hope he can amend these issues to make it visitor friendly.

This is an unsafe place to camp. Our host did not inform us that there were fallen trees, large rocks, and running water going across the unstable forest road. Additionally, the bridge going up the driveway of the property was very unsafe to drive on, as it did not have any rails on the sides. To top it all off, the Solarium was flooding when we arrived and our bed was wet - with a broken wood stove. We did not stay the night. The host clearly did not care about us, and is irresponsible.

Our stay at the hobbit hole was magical! We loved the quirky design and special touches like candles and a furnace. The property is very close to the redwoods which was an Ideal location for what we were looking for. Definitely be mindful of the drive in - it’s very windy and can be difficult in the dark. Dan’s directions were very helpful!

Overall had a unique experience, cool listing and accommodation theme. Too much reliance on previous guests to keep the listing clean as sheets on bed with socks inside and counters were dirty. Had new sheets placed out after our first night but we brought our own bedding anyway. Would have loved a system to say whether or not we felt comfortable with others coming in since there are no locks. Bring your own light sources and bedding as mentioned, got lucky with some left over candles first night and bought some more to leave for next guests. Current in and out system can be hit or miss with the logging/fire teams coming up and down the mountain. We were able to get by but I could see how some might be dissuaded by the process and additional time it could take working around road closures and trucks. Could definitely tell there were other unique sites being maintained or built new after the fires this year including community areas, which were actively under construction, will be even better in the future I’m sure. Cool vibes, sweet animals, but talked to no hosts or permanent residents directly while we were in the community.

The site is beautiful and remote. Part of my bad experience I will chalk up to arriving past dark, which I definitely do NOT recommend doing. I arrived at 8pm, later than anticipated due to the highway being closed for a bit. Dan's directions once getting to the driveway were not helpful -- it wasn't clear where I could park with my non 4WD car nor how far up a steep road the main area was. There was no one there to greet me other than two very sweet dogs, which I understand due to the hour but more info about how to arrive alone would've been helpful. After parking my car and walking up for a while without seeing any sign of people or the main lodge, I just decided to go directly to the Hobbit hole where I had booked my stay...much to my surprise when I opened it there were already two people sleeping there. They were kind enough to let me in and told me their side of the story, that they'd originally booked the treehouse on Airbnb and then Dan changed them to the Hobbit hole a couple days before. All of this without communicating with me at all. I had said I was going to arrive at X time as well, and we'd messaged the day before. I ended up going to the treehouse, and it was empty so i slept there. In the end I still had somewhere to sleep that night, but I am very unhappy with the fact that my originally booked spot was moved. Completely unacceptable. I left early the next morning as planned so I never interacted with Dan in person. No message from him apologizing either.
