Secluded private river and forest camping on the South Fork Mokelumne River. The site has incredible views with a pristine private gold-bearing trout stream with mining history and wildlife preserve located in the gold country of the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern Calaveras County. This unique property is adjacent to over 900 acres of public land and 2 miles of private stream for exploring. With a total of only 6 campsites, it is a great location for a group to reserve the entire campground. All campsites have potable well water spigots and access to a cool water shower, sites 4-6 have electricity. Guests enjoy the privacy while swimming, stream exploring, hiking, spelunking, forest immersion, fishing for wild trout, gold panning, or simply relaxing in a breathtaking environment – come fall in love with this special private ranch. After one stay, you will be a repeat guest. PLEASE NOTE: An All-Wheel Drive or 4-Wheel Drive vehicle is MANDATORY to access campsites 1 - 3, 5 & 6 due to the road incline and rock and gravel road surface. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY! Campsite 4 is accessible with a 2-wd vehicle, and has potable well water and 20 amps of power. Sites have beautiful open views of the property and river canyon with natural shade in the morning and late afternoon. Sounds of the river will lull you to sleep. Although partially shaded, please plan to provide your own portable shade structure(s) during late morning and afternoon as the direct sun can be an inconvenience. The Stranges are professional fish and wildlife biologists and have decided to share this special place for others to enjoy. The property hosts a diversity of plant and wildlife species that might be observed during your stay. Prehistoric and historic resources can be observed along the river corridor. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, bears, and mountain lions have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites. The Ranch's northern portion of the property supports a leased farming operation. Farming operations should not interfere with camping activities. Day trips are possible to Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, local caverns and wine tasting, and historic gold towns.

Premier Riverfront Campsite is situated just above the South Fork Mokelumne River and beach access stairway, perfect for swimming, fishing, gold panning, and river and riparian access. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site is on a flat, soil and rock area 35 feet above and unparalleled views and sounds of the river. This is a spectacular campsite! The site accommodates tent camping or small self contained RVs. There are no RV hookups at this site, but potable water, shower, and portable toilet are located at the campsite. NOW WITH A PERMANENT SHADE STRUCTURE! The shared beach, seasonally shared campfire, and swimming hole is a short walk down the staircase with handrails from the campsite. Although the private river is over 1,855 feet long, it extends over two miles into public land with plenty of area to establish your own special place. Short strolls up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. The site is ideal for private group camping, especially by renting campsites 1 and 2 at the same time. Guests may share the beach and river with other campers. A shower with non-heated water is available to all campers. Portable 5-gallon commercial solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for a fee upon request. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder, and gold pans and gold panning kits are available for rent as well. The campsite has a portable campfire pit for use during the non-wildfire season. Gold Mine Campsite is located overlooking the South Fork Mokelumne River and above the entrance to the gold mine. The flat location is on an old roadbed that provides a separate access trail to the river downstream of the swimming hole. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site has more shade provided by oak trees compared to other campsites. There is a vegetation barrier between the site and the nearest campsite approximately 400 feet away with private views and sounds of the river and forest. Although the private river is over 1,855 feet long, it extends over two miles into public land with plenty of area to call your own. The shared beach, riverside campfire pit, and swimming hole is a very short walk to staircase and river. Short strolls up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. There are currently no electrical hookups at this site, but guests may use a small quiet generator if necessary. Road Bend Campsite is a private, 1,100ft2 site located above the South Fork Mokelumne River and campsites 1 and 2 with views and sounds of the river, and views of mountaintop ridges, river canyon and public land. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive is MANDATORY for access to this site. The flat campsite location is off the access road to the river and is a short 3-4 minute walk down the gravel road to the shared beach, river, shared campfire pit, and swimming hole. NOW WITH A PERMANENT SHADE STRUCTURE! We just added an additional tent camping extension for site 3 to increase the potential number of campers using the site! Although the private river is over 1,855 feet long, it extends over two miles into public land with plenty of area to call your own. Short strolls along the river up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. Potable well water is available at the campsite, but the site does not have electrical or RV hookups. Guests may use a small quiet generator if necessary. Guests will have access to the shower and portable toilet near Campsites #1 and #2. The Canyon Views Campsite is a more private 1,500+ sq ft flat bench area nestled amongst the oak and pine trees with panoramic views of the mountains and canyon, and sound of the river flowing below. The campsite area is isolated from the other campers with great sunsets and sounds of the river flowing. This site is the only campsite easily accessible with a 2-wd vehicle and amenities. The site has access to a potable well water spigot, 20 amps of 110V electricity, portable toilet, and a wood campfire pit - or bring your own small propane campfire. There is plenty of room for 4 or more campers. The views, surrounding trees, and sounds of river and bird life compensate for the distance from the river. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. A shower with non-heated water is available to all campers located near campsites 1 and 2. Portable 5-gallon commercial solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for a fee upon request. This site is easily accessible with a 4-wd vehicle, or a 2-wd vehicle can park about 300 feet away and pack their camping wares to the site. The site has access to a potable well water spigot, 20 amps of 110V electricity, a wood campfire pit, and nearby portable toilet. you're welcome to bring your own small propane campfire. There is plenty of room for 5 or more campers. The views, surrounding trees, and sounds of bird life and solitude compensate for the distance from the river. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. It is highly recommended to bring a 4-wd vehicle to drive down to the river access parking area to enjoy the river and shower facilities. A shower with non-heated water is available to all campers located near the river campsites 1 and 2. Site #6 - Forest Emersion Campsite
We had an amazing weekend at Strange Ranch! It was definitely up there with one of my best camping experiences I’ve ever had. We stayed at site 6 which was private, cozy, and shielded from wind. The campsite had the added plus of an electrical outlet, a water hose, and a nearby clean portapotty which was awesome. Pro tip make sure you are prepared for steep hills coming into the campgrounds! The swimming creek was beautiful and charming as well. I hope to return again sometime. Thanks for everything Terry!

My family and I loved our stay at Strange Ranch. We tent camped for 3 nights at campsite #1. The site was well maintained and the river view was beautiful. The sounds of the river lulled us all into a good night’s sleep each night and the swimming hole kept my kiddo occupied all day. It was a lovely place to unplug for the weekend.

Site #2 - Gold Mine River Overlook
We spent two amazing nights here with the family, our pups, and the grandparents, and wow… this place completely blew us away! If you’re booking, Site #2 gets our vote! It has lots of shade (though I’d still bring a canopy), and it’s just a short walk to the bathroom, shower, and the stairs down to the river. The communal riverfront area was such a bonus, with a fire pit, chairs, a deep swimming hole, and a shallow wading area for the littles. River was long enough to hike and have your own little oasis down the way. It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation while still feeling like a true off-the-grid escape. Evenings around the campfire and falling asleep to the sound of the river were absolute perfection. Even our toddler slept like a champ! A huge thank you to Terry & whiskey for creating and maintaining such a stunning campsite. Everything was so well cared for, and the bathrooms were always clean, which made the stay even better. We can’t wait to come back!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Since I don’t have four-wheel drive, Site 4 was my only option—and it turned out to be perfect. It was incredibly private, with no other campers able to see my campsite. The bathroom was nearby and exceptionally clean. The site also had water, electricity, and convenient trash cans. They recently built wooden shelters over the picnic tables, which was a really nice addition. The river is beautiful and perfect for wading or swimming. The walk down from my campsite to the river is a bit challenging, and the hike back up is definitely a workout! The campground host, Terry, was wonderful and even offered to drive me up and down the hill. Thanks, Terry, for your kindness and hospitality! I’ll be back!

We loved this campsite! Such a beautiful view and property. Our site number 1 was overlooking the creek and right next to the stairs down to the creek. The creek has a great little beach and swimming area and fun little areas to explore up and down the creek. It was very peaceful and we hardly saw any other campers

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
We had a really nice time at Strange Ranch. We had site 4 which was very private, which only helped us enjoy the quiet and views even more. I stayed with my husband and our 2 young kids. My son (5) LOVED the swimming hole, we had a great time hanging out in the super fresh river. We jumped off rocks, fished - my husband and son caught a brown trout. We explored a bit and found the gold mine - a huge hit with my 5 year old. You can tell the owners have put a lot of work into keeping the grounds functional and nice for guests. I think my golden retriever had the best time out of all of us, haha. She spent almost all waking hours in the river and exploring. My only comment, which is really specific to us is that trekking down to the river with our 1 year and everything a baby requires was a bit of a chore but again - super specific to our family. Everything was clean, and even though we didn’t get to meet the hosts, they were very communicative and gave us lots of great tips!

We stayed at campsite #4, the only site that doesn’t require AWD and it did not disappoint! Our site had a fire pit, gazebo, water, partial shading and a view of the BLM mountain side that changes colors as the sun sets. From our site, you couldn’t hear and see any of the other campsites. I highly recommended visiting the river onsite where you can find another fire pit, and a bunch of pools of waters in either direction of the river. Terry was a terrific host! Detailed, helpful, responsive, and so knowledgeable about the land he’s been developing for 30+ years. We’ll definitely be back!

We loved staying at this campsite! The property owners put a lot of work into making these campsites accommodating and comfortable. Campsite # 1 was definitely the best because it was closest to the water and you could hear it rushing all day/night. The shade structure makes a huge difference too! The beach and the swimming hole are the best part. The owners poured concrete over some of the rocks in the river to make entry/exit a little easier (but water shoes area are a must). It was blazing hot, but the creek spot was where we hung out all day and the water kept us very cool. I just loved being there and I can't wait to go back! The owners were very proud of the property and super accommodating. Overall, a great experience!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Strange Ranch is breathtaking! The river’s flow is mesmerizing and the views astound. The river valley is steep sloped causing the rivers sound to carry up the valley. Watching the sunrise creep into the gouge is awe inspiring! During our trip the weather brought rain into the valley, watching the birds taking refuge in the trees and hiss of rain brought tranquility and peace. This is just an awesome natural environment shared by the gracious nature of Terry and Whiskey The valley has a long and rich history of gold prospecting and mining and the artifacts on site prove it Terry shared with us some of that history and we appreciated it very much. The sites are very nice 1 and 2 are literally above the river roughly 800 feet, 3 is about a thousand yards above the river, 4 is up the slope nearer the top and situated right on the top of the slope , 5 is above 4 and nestled into the trees , six is the highest up and a nice secluded site up a steep sloped All in all Terry has gone to great lengths to make this a very good and well thought out place to camp. He is a gracious host and we had a fantastic time.

We had a great time at Site #6 and Terry was a fantastic host. The river was scenic and an idyllic place to lounge around on a sunny day. Site #6 is perched up at a high point on the property with a beautiful vista and has plentiful shade. It’s great to have a fire pit, water and electricity right at the site. From Site #6 it was a bit of steep climb down to the port-a-potty and this time of year (mid-May) had a good amount of mosquitos. Nonetheless, we truly enjoyed our time!

What a magical piece of land. For warmer months, Strange Ranch is now ranked at the top of our favorite camp sites. The swimming hole is very nice if you don’t mind slightly chilly water. It’s peaceful, beautiful and family friendly. Thank you Terry!

Strange Ranch and site 3 was perfect for us. Terry is an incredible host and this Hipcamp experience was the best we have had so far. The site had everything we needed. We felt remote but also close to the items we needed, bathrooms, shower, and the river! We will definitely plan another trip in the future to revisit this beautiful area.

This was the most beautiful, fun, and relaxing experience we’ve had camping so far. The views were amazingly beautiful of the river and mountains, my boyfriend and I were in awe the whole time. Terry was such an amazing host he was very knowledgeable and kind and he made sure we were good and tended to us very well. We will be back over the summer and we can’t wait!

Great Campsite, Will Be Back!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
[NOTE: This review is for site #3] Our family of 3 had a memorable stay at Strange Ranch. Terry provided great detail about what to expect leading up to our trip, including current weather forecast and better navigational tips than Google maps. The first plus was how accommodating Terry was, especially when we showed up 6 hrs later than original ETA. He opened up the gates for us around 11PM and escorted us to our site. Site 3 was more space than we needed and came equipped with a brand new permanent shade structure w/ picnic table, custom firepit, and potable water source. We were able to fit our 6 person tent, 10x10 EZ Up, and slightly larger enclosed shade tent area with plenty of room to spare. The communal restroom was probably a few minutes downhill walk (right between sites 1 & 2), but we never walked it as we had our own portable toilet. We did drive down a few times (maybe less than a minute drive) to access the communal wash basin, trash/recycle bins, and access to the river. Highly recommend visiting the river and signing up for the aquatic wildlife tour, esp if you're into bugs. Our 2 y/o son had a BLAST playing in and around the river. The temp of the water is pretty chilly this time of year, so we didn't get to get in further than our knees, but it was still a ton of fun. Bonus was getting to play fetch with Terry's dog, Whiskey, who had no problem swimming for the hours we were there. We'll be back! (with a bigger group) Thanks, Terry! :)

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Originally we booked campsite 4 for 2 nights but the host Terry was so kind and upgraded our group to site 1, which has a view of the creek and close access to washroom/water. The whole experience was a 10/10 and we will be coming back for sure.

Site #2 - Gold Mine River Overlook
I’ll totally want to be back in this camping place, we stay in the spot 2 there is a perfect tree that gives you a shade, easy trail to visit the cave, perfect spot to listen to the river. We went to celebrate my husband birthday and it was awesome. Terry it’s a great host and we definitely want to be back for summer (:

Best camping “reset” in a long time

Site #1 - Premier Riverview Site
This was the first visit to Strange Ranch, and it wont be the last! *FIRST AND FOREMOST* You WILL NEED AWD/4X4 CAPABLE VEHICLES! (The paths to the sites are on dirt inclines) Now the good stuff: We stayed at site 1 which was amazing with the view of the trees, birds, poppy’s all on the hillside sides & the sound of the river through the night. There are paths to hike with proper gear and many land features like Native American grinding stones and a small Gold mine shaft. You can hike to & reach BLM lands from camp making this a proper hiker’s dream base camp! The warm day and the cold night made for a serene atmosphere. Terry, our camp host, was very courteous, polite, and accommodating. He and his amazing dog Whiskey made the trip that much more special, and will be the main reason for our return! Thank you Terry for your hospitality and amazing campsites! Looking forward to our next stay!!!!

Terry was a wonderfully kind and knowledgeable host! You can tell that he truly appreciates the land and each guest that visits. My fiancé, two pups and I, stayed at Strange Ranch for 3 days and it was magic. The river was easily accessible, the campsite and amenities were well kept and the views from the site were unreal. During the day you could relax by the river at the beach and at night, the stars & moon were so bright it lit up the sky. Our pups got to roam and explore unleashed which made our stay stress free. I highly recommend renting the gold mining kit and to try your luck in the river. We spent the entire day in the river feeling like kids again and that was a priceless experience. On our last night, we got to hangout with Terry and his family for a drink and great conversation. We went on a camping trip and left meeting incredibly kind new friends. 100% recommend coming here. We will definitely be back!!! Thank you Terry P.S if you're lucky you'll get to meet their sweet lab Whiskey and watch Terry play fetch with him in the river :)

Perfect Northern Cal Get-Away

Site #1 - Premier Riverview Site
If you need time to get away and enjoy a beautiful piece of Northern California, this is the place. We spent a wonderful weekend at site #1, exploring the Mokelumne River and the peaceful surrounding including a gold mine. Terry responded quickly to our questions, gave clear directions for RV access, and even met us to guide us to the campsite. The site was spotless, very level and thoughtfully equipped — everything we needed was provided. We had such a great stay that we’ll be booking again soon. Highly recommended!

Site #3 - Road Bend Camp
Incredible experience. The host was above and beyond accommodating, and his knowledge of the area made the experience extra special. We cannot thank him enough for how kind and welcoming he was, and he had so many interesting facts to share. This is a gem of a location, with a spectacular view and so much wildlife, particularly birds. You can spend a lot of time exploring the area, and the sound of the river was perfect to fall asleep to. This spot is also located near many caverns and historic towns if you don’t want to spend the entire time at the campground. We will definitely be back!

We had such an amazing time! The campsite and surrounding area were spotless, and the river and landscape were absolutely beautiful. Terry was a fantastic host—friendly, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable about the local area and ecology. We’re definitely making this trip a yearly tradition!
