Private gated RV campground in the Gold Country. Located in the historic townsite of Columbia known as the "Gem of the Southern Mines". There is 1 site so you'll have the campground to yourselves. There are 2 electrical panels so you can bring your family or friends if you like. If there are 2 RV's you can reserve the campground as a double site. WE ONLY ACCEPT FULLY SELF CONTAINED RV'S ONLY. NO TENTS NO LONG TERM STAYS. Campsite has 2 electric pedestals 50/30/110. Water hookups at each site. NO SEWER. NO DUMP NO RESTROOMS AVAILABLE. Includes picnic table, camp fire ring, Weber BBQ, doggie station, horseshoe pit, corn hole, walking trails, and garbage/recycle bins. Winter camping dates subject to weather conditions. Located 0.6 mile to Columbia State Historic Park, parking and entrance is free and open year around. It is about a 15 minute walk. Close to Murphys, New Melones lake and Tuttletown recreation area, Moaning Caverns, Downtown Sonora, Mother Lode Escape Rooms, Columbia Airport, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, Black Oak Casino, Chicken Ranch Casino, Indigeny Reserve, Inner Sanctum Cellars Basecamp with other wineries and breweries nearby. About a 50 minute drive to Big Trees State Park and Pinecrest Lake. Yosemite National Park is about 1-1/2 hour drive to the Yosemite valley floor. Check for YARTS for transportation from downtown Sonora to Yosemite valley. There are several rafting outfitters in the area. Restaurants in the immediate vicinity include Mandy's Breakfast-Lunch, Columbia Frosty, El Jardin, St. Charles Saloon Pizza. Gas, diesel mini mart, market store nearby.

This is by far the best place we have stayed on hipcamp. Beautiful, peaceful, private and easy to get to. We had a wonderful time with our dogs and will definitely be back!

Squirrel Rock RV Campground-Single
This was our second stay at Squirrel Rock and we love it. Quiet, clean, easily accessible and very well appointed. Easy walking distance to town is also great for us because once we set up the RV that’s where it stays till we leave. We look forward to coming back soon!

We recently did a trip to some Calaveras County attractions and found Squirrel Rock for our stay with our 25' trailer. The owners did a great job setting up the site for visitors. Parking and hooking up was very easy. The site had a bunch of cool things to do while hanging out (introduced my kids to horseshoes and they loved the games bin). They gave us some recommendations for nearby food (which were awesome!). We would definitely stay here again and recommend it for others too!!

Squirrel R Campground was amazing! The property is very well kept, tidy, and adorably decorated with seating areas, a horseshoe area, and great ambiance lighting. The RV spot was exceptionally level, and the connection area was easy to access. The host was very accommodating of our varied arrival time and welcomed us upon arrival. I would 100% stay here again!

Hier is een nette Engelse vertaling voor een review: --- A well-maintained and charming campsite where you feel a lot of privacy. Tidy, well-kept with a cozy and thoughtfully designed layout. It offered all the necessary facilities, including games, a pergola, and a neat table with a tablecloth. The pitch was spacious, quiet and we saw deer, rabbits an of course squirels. The site is within walking distance of Columbia - highly recommended for gold panning and exploring the historic town. A beautiful and perfect location to plan for in a road trip through the American West.

Very nice and private place with everything you need! We enjoyed watching the sunset over the airport and the close proximity to old town Columbia. Extremely well kept space that is safe for kids and dogs to roam. We loved it!

A last minute whirlwind trip to Sonora led us to stumble upon Julie’s private campground… and Wow! The best way to describe it is like getting bumped to first class… and never wanting to go back to coach! She set the bar high with all the details a camper would enjoy. Starting with Julie herself who answered all my pre-reservation questions about whether their site could accommodate our larger trailer and being flexible on our arrival and departure times if needed. The site is secluded, yet near everything. Standard water & power hookups. Beautiful flat graveled campsite with a covered picnic area, and Edison lights strung for evening ambiance. We didn’t have time to enjoy the horse shoes or Cornhole, but definitely plan to come back and spend more time. Thanks for the great stay Julie. It was just what we were looking for!

We loved our time at Squirrel Rock! We were warmly greeted by Gwen, who provided us with a list of their favorite places and things to do in the area. We spent a day hiking at Calaveras Big trees SP and another day exploring the rich history of Columbia, Sonora, and Murphys. The campground is warm and welcoming, and extremely well taken care of. We loved falling asleep each night to the sound of crickets chirping. Highly recommend!

Wonderful location, walking distance to columbia state park, very short drive to Jamestown, Murphys, Angels camp, and many others. Campsite is one of the nicest i stayed at, everything is so well thought out, electric and water, fire pit, very calm and peaceful, loved it, can't wait to go back!

Squirrel Rock is a great place to camp. Very private RV spots with water and electric. Nice table and awning setup, fire pit, bbq, adirondack chairs and a game box. Close to Sonora and Jamestown. Our second time there and I’m sure we’ll return!

Located a couple of minutes outside of the gold rush town of Columbia, Squirel rock is a gem of a campsite. it’s possibly the nicest private camping you can find anywhere! The site is impeccably maintained and Julie has thought of just about every creature comfort one would need when RV camping.

Joy Between a Rock and a Hard Spot

Squirrel Rock was unbelievable! My son and grands got there first and explored the trails and climbed and jumped off the incredible rocks exposed by the 49ers. With trees to run circles around, tag was a favorite activity. (The sound of running in gravel will be a lasting memory.) The sunshade over the lovely tables nestled against the rock made a wonderful room to rendezvous in to play games from Julie's box, including Uno, Yahtzee and Pass the Pig. At night, string lights and lights tucked in the rocks created magic. Because everything was so pristine, I thought this site was a new venture, but the guest book says differently. Julie has been hosting here for several years and has covered every need. The BBQ (bring charcoal) was clean with pavers beneath to keep it flat, and even the trash and recycling cans were easy to use. 😂 Learning to open and close the gate at the top of the drive gave the kids a feeling of accomplishment and responsibility. Squirrel Rock was a perfect place to come home to after experiencing CA history in Columbia and natural history in Yosemite. Thanks, Julie, for helping us make Forever Memories.

Don’t tell anyone about this place! Let’s keep it a secret! LOL! We loved our time at Squirrel Rock RV. Gwen was super helpful and we could not have designed a better spot. The four of us (2 rigs) had it all to ourselves, our own private RV park! Go out of your way if you have to but don’t miss this gem!

We loved our stay at Squirrel Rock campground!! The owner has created a serene and comfortable spot to camp. We enjoyed exploring the area and especially taking our granddaughter to Columbia State Park. You can walk to restaurants and a small convenience store if you choose but you still feel like you are camping away from the town. Beautiful sunset views and the stars at night were amazing! A very relaxing experience. We plan to stay here again.!

We absolutely love this little gem. It is a little snug with our trailer but completely doable. It is always so clean, and we love that the deer and wildlife just walk through camp. It is close to places to eat, and little adventures and even central to come great wine tasting and pour houses. We will be making this a regular on our camping trip locations.
