SiloSide Barn and Homestead

The SiloSide barn and homestead is better known around town as the "Old Somers Farm" in reference to the day when the barn housed 60 head of cows. The farm was a part of the Cabot Creamery Cooperative, and closed this era in the late 1980s. Prior to being a dairy farm consisting of over 500 acres, the property served as a tavern, inn, tannery, and has always been a traditional, well-loved farmhouse. Our farmhouse was built in 1785, and the barn built around the 1830s and expanded in 1941. The soil here is rich, and the forest full of wildlife. We've named our home "SiloSide" as tribute to the magic we feel on the non-road facing, silo-side of the barn, where you'll be camping.

The lean-to can sleep 3-4 people in a cozy arrangement, as the floor is approximately 10 by 9 feet.

Our farm & campground features stunning, panoramic views of the First Branch of the White River in the verdant hills of central Vermont. It overlooks the village of Chelsea, the shire town of Orange County.

Free Verse Farm is a hilltop herb farm run by two art-making, herb-loving farmers. The property boasts twenty sloping, knoll-laden, open acres overlooking the First Branch of the White River as it passes through the scenic village of Chelsea, Vermont. We have incredible views, forest trails that offer magical woodland wanderings, and spacious campsites in our fields.

We also invite you to explore our cultivated fields of herbs and vegetables and become acquainted with the wide variety of tea, culinary, and medicinal herbs that we grow and process on our farm. You can also visit with the cows that spend their summer munching our delicious green pastures.

Our full line of herbs and herbal products are for sale via our website or at Free Verse Farm Shop, located just one mile from our farm in downtown Chelsea. Our Farm Shop offers a wide variety of fresh produce, provisions, fresh baked goods, alcoholic (& non-) beverages, and more to enjoy during your stay or as you continue on your journey.

AMENITIES: we offer a hot outdoor shower & sink, as well as an outhouse with a composting toilet. Each campsite has a firepit and a picnic table.

CAMPSITE DETAILS: We currently have 2 campsites open. They are located in meadows with beautiful views of the First Branch Valley and Chelsea village. 4 wheel drive is recommended, but not necessary, and you are always welcome to hike up to your site. The site is spacious and private.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: We also run Free Verse Farm Shop (OPEN: Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday 9am-3pm), a local grocery, café, and apothecary to serve our community and visitors to the area, while supporting local farms and artisans. You can also pre-order online (shop.freeversefarm.com) to pick up in store or ship your order around the USA.

The village of Chelsea hosts a weekly summer farmers market May-September on Fridays from 3-6pm (mid-May through September). In downtown Chelsea there is also a pub (The Wagon Wheel), gas station (110 Quickstop), two town commons, a small library, and a general store (Will's Store), and a farm stand (Chicken Wiggle Farm).

Within 20-45 minutes of our farm you can reach the larger towns of Montpelier (state capital), South Royalton, Randolph, Woodstock, White River Junction, and the Upper Valley Region (Dartmouth College), all of which offer a wide variety of attractions and services. Upon your arrival, you will be given a welcome packet with more detailed information about our area, and we'll be happy to provide you with any other tips you're looking for.

Onion River Campground

Onion River Campground is connected with Onion River Intentional Community. We hold events throughout our season, which runs from May 1st through October 31st.

We offer spacious sites along the Winooski River, or come find a private nook tucked up in the apple orchard, next to the plum tree by the pond, or in the high meadow.

Our amenities include:  

26 spacious sites for rigs: 24 W/E and 6 W/E/S

Plus 23 acres of private tenting options

Owner-operated

River access: Great fishing, wading, tubing, swimming 

Orchards and greenhouse: Join us for the harvest

Trails, meadows, waterfall access

Found a friend on the old rail bed. This used to be a rail line that ran all the way up to Canada, but the tracks were removed and now it's a perfect path for hiking and biking...just a few minutes walk from camp!

Clear fall nights are perfect for star viewing, and this campground is far from city lights.  Amazing seeing the fall colors still popping in the fire glow.

C.Valley Alpaca and Beef Ranch

Champlain Valley Alpacas and Beef is a family farm owned and operated by the Foshay family since 1998.  Our girls, Gracie and Olivia are grown now.   Gracie is married to Jaron and they live in Alabama. Olivia is a nurse and currently is living at home which is a huge blessing to Mom and Dad. Our herd of alpacas once was shown successfully in the Eastern States, now mostly range on the farm, having sweet cria (babies), growing magnificent fiber and effortlessly entertaining throngs of wedding guests! Our beef herd, comprised of Black and Red Angus, Hereford and Belted Galways has fluxuated as the market and hay supplies demand. We have a vineyard of Marquette grapes that are so delicious, that we have to race the birds for them in the fall. Our land is quiet, off the beaten path, and brimming with beautiful views of mountains, hills, valleys with winding creeks.  This property has seen years of agriculture as a sheep farm, dairy farm and a fence company.  We are happy to share this land and  our gentle creatures with you.Learn more about this land:We are a working Alpaca and Beef farm in Central Vermont. Our cottage is available in the spring, summer and fall to Airbnb guests. Recently we have added the winter season for the adventurous  Clamping crowd. The cottage is very private, with alpacas nearby. Hiking, xc-skiing (bring your own) and The Vast (Snowmobile)trails are also nearby. We have amazing western views of the Adirondack mountains, and are 20 minutes from Middlebury, Vergennes; 1 hour from Burlington and Rutland and 45min from Middlebury Snowbowl Ski Area.

Moose Meadow Lodge & Treehouse

Willie Docto and Greg Trulson are committed to providing a comfortable, fun, and make-yourself-at-home atmosphere at the Moose Meadow Lodge & Treehouse. The two met in 1992 at a log home B&B in West Virginia and have stayed at many B&Bs and log lodges ever since. In 1996, these former Washingtonians moved to Vermont to pursue their dream of owning a B&B. Goldilocks Cabin

I am an interior designer, who realized I could use my particular talents to create the kind of unique vacation rental that I myself am always seeking. In this new world of on-line vacation rentals and professionally managed properties, the vacation rental industry has become commoditized, with one home just like the other, for a hotel-like experience. Goldilocks cabin is the cure for this predictability—without giving up any of the comfort you would find at a fine hotel. Learn more about this land:Goldilocks Cabins is for those seeking rustic luxury. No roughing it here. The cabin has a full bath, kitchen with all conveniences, one bedroom with queen bed, sleeping loft with full bed, and a pull out sofa in the living room. There is central heat and a wood stove in the winter. A/C units in the summer. The cabin has two decks, a gas bbq grill, and a fire pit. Cabin is on four wooded acres and is on Stowe Hollow Road, a residential neighborhood of widely spaced homes, and about 25 yards off the road. So if you are looking for a secluded cabin in the woods Goldilocks might not be for you.  If however you are looking for a conveniently located well appointed cabin, your are at the right place. Goldilocks is a mile from Main Street in Stowe, and 8 miles to Mt. Mansfield and skiing. Hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, sledding, and swimming holes all a few minute drive from the cabin.
