The property has been in the Monge family since the late 1940's bought by Jose Monge Marquez. The campsite is located in a private property in the outskirts of El Yunque Rainforest in the town of Luquillo. The campsite areas and facilities are about 8 out of 43 acres of all the private property of rainforest, flowers, palm trees, and various fruit trees.
The Sabana River, one of many that originate from El Yunque National Rainforest, the river goes through the property. All the campsites are close by the river with each having their own access and individual fire pits.
The local attractions are:
-El Yunque National Rainforest 15 minute drive up the mountain.
-Las Paylas rockslides (2 minute drive & 8 minutes walking).
-The Luquillo beaches which are La Pared, Playa Azul, Barneario de Luquillo. Los Kioskos de Luquillo, ect. (10 minutes drive).

This place enchants the heart, by simply surrendering to the magic landscape visuals and sounds all around and within this site. You hear nothing but purity on this marvelous site, from the sounds of 5 species of coqui frogs and so many native birds from local endemics to native resident birds and migratory passerines and birds of pray. I grew up in PR and explored the island thoroughly for nearly 30 years and I had never been on a place where I heard seven to eight pairs of PR screech owls joyfully chanting all at once from all around. A relatively short hike within the property takes you into another realm down by the river where isolation is bliss. A night hike through the property trees brought me so much wonder from hundreds of fireflies and the night orchestra from owls, coquies and so many insect sounds. Awesome campsite, relatively secluded, the creek and coqui and bug sounds can get loud at night but it was great. Very fun to explore flora and fauna in the area. Definitely check out the natural water slides that are about 15 min walk from the campsite. Be aware that it will definitely rain at least a few times during your stay. We tried to hang some towels to dry but that was pointless. Communication with the host and the check in were fast and easily available. Highly recommend!

No hay electricidad, ni agua potable en el área de acampar, y mucho menos señal de Wifi. Es desconectarse del mundo y conectarse con la naturaleza.

My wife and I camp quite a bit, and this was probably our favorite spot. We may have gotten lucky with it being off season, but the campsite was very secluded. We camped out of our van and were able to back up right to the river and listen to the babbling water all night.
Only 8 minutes from town. The hikes in Yunque national forest are incredible.

They went out of their way to make sure we had a safe place to park our 22ft camper van, even letting us in after regular hours, after all our other overnight camping options had fallen through. Great communication and a nice spot in the jungle next to running water and plenty of coquis to sing us to sleep. Will definitely consider coming back for more than just an overnight stay next time!

It is difficult to overstate just how wonderful this place is. Andres gave us clear and concise directions on how to get there, via pre-recorded video, and that made it easy to get there. The drive itself was marvelous because for the most part you are high on the mountains.
We are avid campers and brought everything we needed but have to say that the outdoor kitchen/gazebo was pretty darn cool and convenient! There is a stove, kitchen sink, a “fogón” (cooking fire pit) as well as a full size refrigerator. This was more “Glamping” than “camping”. We camp every month on full moon as I love to watch the moonrise as well as the moonset and this place was particularly special for that.
As someone that grew up in Puerto Rico but lived most of my adult life outside the island, what I can tell you about the area is that the residents are extremely friendly, well manners and considerate that I am otherwise accustomed to. Everybody we saw whether driving on or driving out would wave at us, as if we were known to them.
I hope you try this place and when you do, I am confident you are definitely going to enjoy it.

We drove a camper van to the location & the host was very accommodating to what we needed for the van. Its a very steep drive so caution when getting there. But sleeping in the forest with the coqui’s and water right next to us was so magical to wake up to!

This was our second time camping at Hacienda Monterrey in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite places. It’s easy to get to from the main road, but once you’re there, it feels like a peaceful escape into nature.
One of the things that makes this place stand out is the host, Gerardo. He’s incredibly kind and attentive — both times we’ve stayed, he personally came by to make sure everything was in order and that we were comfortable. That kind of hospitality really goes a long way and makes the experience even more special.
The campground is simple and clean, with no electricity, which actually adds to the relaxing, unplugged vibe. It does have clean restrooms and hot showers, which we really appreciated. Toilet paper is provided (a small detail, but super helpful!), and parking is available and conveniently close.
My 9-year-old son told me this is his favorite place in the world right now, and he’s already asking to go back. As a parent, there’s no better review than that.
We’ll definitely be returning. If you’re looking for a quiet, family-friendly spot to connect with nature, Hacienda Monterrey is a hidden gem worth discovering.

It was a great experience. The river was beautiful and we explored a lot! Got connected with nature! Good place too relax and have a good time. We brought our own stuff like shower, water, solar lights and a bathroom so we didn’t used the facilities but I will definitely recommend if you want to camp outside bring all your stuff. and If you brought your tent definitely bring a mat or a comforter so u can sleep comfortably in the ground.

Finca Uateke is just beyond beautiful. It is remote and tucked in the mountains away from the main streets, perfect for nature lovers (especially birders!) and everyone who is adventurous and wishes to experience a more peaceful and quiet side to our Puerto Rico. The drive is not for the faint of heart haha but everyone visiting Orocovis should know that! ;)
Andres is an exceptional host, he is incredibly attentive and kind and made sure that I had a good time at the finca. He provided clear instructions and helpful videos on how to find the location and how to park there. The amenities were perfect and were kept very clean. You can tell that he loves Finca Uateke and genuinely wants to share it with his guests.
Overall, I absolutely recommend that you visit, whether you’re a native, local, or just visiting the Island for a few days. It’s well worth it! :)

We loved camping at Mountain Retreat! All the amenities were super comfortable and very clean. The view is breathtaking. We made a campfire and had a great time with our baby.
