Go off-grid and explore canyons, mountains, hot springs, and petroglyphs in central Nevada.
South of Austin and the “Loneliest Road in America,” Kingston is a great place to disconnect for some off-grid camping. Nestled in the Kingston Canyon, it’s a gateway to the Toiyabe Crest and the Arc Dome Wilderness of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, with plenty of rugged wilderness and mountain and desert terrain to explore on foot or by off-road vehicle. Fish for rainbow trout at Groves Lake and Kingston Creek or soak in a natural hot spring at Spencer Hot Springs. Admire the well-preserved ancient Shoshone pictographs and petroglyphs at Toquima Cave and Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area, and keep an eye out for native wildlife like the desert bighorn sheep and the mountain bluebird. Stay at the developed US Forest Service Kingston Campground, Toquima Cave Campground, or the BLM-run Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Area Campground for major views—just prepare for limited amenities. Otherwise, it’s possible to enjoy primitive, dispersed camping just about anywhere else your explorations take you.
