Saddle up for a one-of-a-kind desert getaway! The Billy The Kid Tent is a fully outfitted canvas retreat set on ten fenced acres of wide-open high desert—no other campers, just you, the mountains, and the silence of the wild.
The tent is spacious enough to stand, stretch, and truly unwind. Inside, you'll find a real queen-size bed with fresh linens, extra pillows, a cowhide blanket for chilly nights, propane heater, solar-powered lighting for cozy evenings. There's even a private indoor loo, so no wandering out into the night.
Need to stay connected? We’ve got a solar power system so you can charge your phone, laptop, or camera right from the tent.
Outside, relax at your private picnic table, pizza oven and grill onsite or fire up the included firewood at the fire pit (season permitting), or warm up inside with the wood-burning stove with a cooking top. And when night falls, enjoy some of the clearest stargazing skies around.

Weekend Trip to Star Gaze Ranch
What an incredible experience! So many amenities (toys/games/etc) to help us get in the spirit of the Wild West! Not to mention everything we needed for a comfortable stay: pizza oven, grill, toilet, comfy bed, close to town but private, beautiful expansive views. We only wish we could’ve stayed longer! Would absolutely recommend this spot (and host!) to others visiting the area.

Star Gaze Ranch is fantastic, absolutely great view of the desert and mountains from the site that make you forget there’s anything else around you. Host was friendly, communicative and good conversation. Came out when he saw me struggling with the stove and made sure I’d be able to cook up dinner. I’ll be passing through the area again and would stay at this spot over any hotel any day!

Jeannie and Bradley are the kind of hosts who think of everything — and then think of a few more things. The Billy the Kid tent is extraordinary. Themed with genuine care and western authenticity, it comes equipped with a wood stove, a cowhide bedspread, wanted posters honoring the fact that the Kid himself spent time in this area, and a BB gun across the bottom of the bed for coyotes. I appreciated the thoroughness.
Dinner was a chicken caesar salad delivered cold and perfectly dressed. The Adirondack chairs face a view of the desert valley and mountains that I will think about for a long time. The stars, when they came, were exactly what the ranch promised — infinite, uncompeted, like traveling in space.
And then my car died.
Bradley gave up hours of his morning to help me navigate an unexpected mechanical failure- making calls, coordinating help, standing in the Nevada heat with a woman he had met the day before because that is simply what good people do. He did not have to do any of it. He did all of it anyway.
That is not hospitality. That is community. That is the kind of human decency that makes you remember why you left the interstate in the first place.

What a fabulous respite! Gracious host, beautiful country. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Loved the sound of coyotes, star-gazing, stunning silence, all in a well-appointed canvas tent. The bed was so comfortable and I was charmed to boil water for cowboy coffee on the wood stove in the morning. Road-tripping so a short one night stay, but I hope I get a chance to return!

Wow! What a great place. Super nice hosts who literally thought of everything to make sure their guests are comfortable. The bed was perfect, we slept like babies, and oh, the quiet was soooo nice. We only spent one night at Star Gaze Ranch, but it was well worth it! It was a lovely setup with beautiful scenery. The stars were beautiful at night, and the sunrise was wonderful as well. The hosts thought of everything to make us comfortable for our stay and we're very responsive. We brought our dog and 2 year old who both also had a great time looking for bugs and playing in the dirt! The cowboy coffee was superb as well. Thank you so much for making our stay one of a kind!

Where to go
Battle Mountain Area
Simple RV parks and truck stops with full hookups and pull-through sites can be found in town, but south of Battle Mountain, the Mill Creek Recreation Area is a high desert oasis offering canyon hikes, trout fishing, birding, and free camping under cottonwood trees at an elevation of 5,200 feet. This former California Conservation Corps (CCC) and now BLM-run creekside campground is a local favorite year-round with sites for tents and RVs. If you want to catch your dinner, make camp at Willow Creek, where secluded campsites lie steps away from quiet fishing ponds.
I-80
Head west of Battle Mountain for hiking, off-roading, and free camping at the BLM-run Water Canyon Recreation Area near Winnemucca, or fishing, water sports, and camping at the Rye Patch State Recreation Area near Lovelock. Head east toward Elko for water sports, fishing, hunting, and both primitive and developed camping (with the Ruby Mountains as the backdrop) at the South Fork State Recreation Area. South of Elko, the scenic Lamoille Canyon offers two developed campgrounds. For something different, pitch your tent on the open brush land of a private Hipcamp property.
Austin and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
State Road 305 south of Battle Mountain, on the way to Austin, Nevada, is a popular location for speed races of all types, but head further south past Austin for mountain biking, land sailing, hot springs, and the rugged terrain of the Toiyabe Mountains. Several developed campgrounds in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest offer seasonal RV and tent camping options.
When to go
Spring through fall offer the most pleasant weather for camping and outdoor activities (even with chilly nights year-round), though winter brings snowy recreation and ice fishing. Many campgrounds are closed over winter, or offer limited amenities. No matter the time of year, the semi-arid climate makes for some of the best stargazing in northern Nevada.
