Retreat to the Country

4 sites · Lodging10 acres · Holts Summit, MO
This land has been asking to be shared. First it was swings and little things for the grandchildren and their friends. Then the Cabin by the pond began to welcome visitors. Soon the steep slope anchored a Yurt with a wrap-around deck that puts you up in the trees. Our gathering spot by the creek became a camp site. Recently the grandkids' Bunk House found its way in. Our Retreat is 10 acres, narrow, but 1/4 mile deep, stretching down a steep wooded slope to a creek - and up the other side to the top of a bluff.  It is only ten miles to Jefferson City but has a quiet and distant feel.

The site listing numbers you see on this map are simply for general reference, you can camp anywhere you please. Also, the only vehicle access is the driveway and large open field you see on the map here. Folks with roof top tents or campers or RV's can set up camp anywhere in this field, along the edge of the woods. The remaining acreage is heavily wooded and hilly with creeks running through. At this time, vehicles cannot penetrate the woods. Pinnacle Park is a simple walk down the road/hill from our land. You can have fun hiking, splashing in the creek, playing in the sand and rock climbing at the Pinnacle's. Pinnacle Park also has nice shelters for picnics with fireplaces and restrooms. We offer a water hydrant on our land, but no electric or bathrooms.

Camping near Boonville with climbing guide

Overview

One of Boonville’s local museums is named the River, Rails & Trails Museum—and that just about sums up this town’s history. While the Missouri River and railways once brought travelers through town, today’s visitors might be biking the famed Katy Trail or driving Interstate 70 across mid-Missouri. In addition to the local museums, Boonville offers a charming downtown and plenty of nearby natural areas to explore. Those looking for a camping spot nearby will find private RV parks and glamping rentals. Public campgrounds operated by the Missouri Department of Fish & Wildlife are found at Roberts Bluff and Harriman Hill Access.

Where to go

Katy Trail

Have you ever wanted to bike 240 miles? You can in Missouri, thanks to the Katy Trail. This linear state park straddles a rail-to-trail conversion that crosses the middle of the Show-Me State, with tantalizing views of prairies, hills, and woodlands. A number of towns along the route offer refreshing stops, with restaurants and accommodations catering to cyclists. Campgrounds offer tent and RV sites, some with hookups. You may also find unique glamping rentals nearby.

Columbia

Columbia is the heart of Missouri geographically and home to the state’s flagship university. The population swells during the school year, adding energy to the already-vibrant downtown area, which boasts an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, breweries, and more. Private RV resorts are available, offering amenities such as full hookups and free wifi. Public campgrounds can be accessed at Finger Lakes State Park, just outside of town. This park is a recreational hub, with fishing, paddling, and ATV riding.

Arrow Rock State Historic Site

Arrow Rock State Historic Site and Park lies just over 20 minutes northwest of Boonville, providing history, recreation, and camping. Several remnants of a small town built in the 1800s along the Missouri River have been preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time. For outdoor recreation, toss a line in the fishing pond or hit the trails. The park campground offers tent and RV sites, some with electric and full hookups.

When to go

Missouri experiences all four seasons heartily, offering great variations in temperatures and precipitation. Summers can get above 90°F with added humidity, while spring and fall are generally mild with occasional rain. The woodlands around Boonville are especially scenic in October, as the leaves change. Winter generally isn’t the best time for camping, as temperatures drop below freezing with the possibility of snow and ice.
