WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s, when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La Rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging, and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from Interstate 10, but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

This is a fantastic place to stay if you're visiting Atchafalaya Basins. The house is comfortable and well-equipped, with plenty of thoughtful details that make a real difference. Ginny and her husband were also incredibly helpful and shared some great local recommendations during our stay. And if you're lucky, you may even be welcomed by a few hummingbirds! Highly recommended.

We had such a nice stay in the cute little trailer! The patio area is a very quiet and relaxing place to unwind and watch the dozen or so hummingbirds that fly back and forth to their feeders, and the hosts were the kind of people you wish were your neighbors back home. I would definitely recommend it.

Lovely little spot! We stayed in the RV and it was perfect for our needs. Comfortable, cozy RV, bed was comfy. If it had not been raining we would have really enjoyed the outdoor patio area also. Hosts were just wonderful! Sooo very sweet. Location was fun! Close to several locations where you can take a great airboat ride! Wish we could have stayed longer. Highly highly recommend!

Outside areas were well manicured and the porch, bedroom, and bath we used were immaculate, nicely decorated, and well provisioned. Ginny and her husband were friendly and accommodating! We had one very small issue and they were proactive to take care of it. Showers were warm and the bed was comfy. I loved having access to a fire pit. Ginny has thought to stock the rv with anything you could possibly need!

Had a good time, it was very comfortable. Ginny was very kind and accommodating, including my requests related to mitigating emf sources. Everything was provided for, including a private ref and insights and tips about the area/vicinity. Its a great place to be outside of a big city and to see some of the water bodies in LA. The bird watching was very cool, and the rabbits too.

We really enjoyed having access to the beautiful creek. Exploring upstream and downstream was one of the highlights of our trip. We took our chairs and our coffee each morning and sat on the sandbar while the sun rose. It was very peaceful. Cooking over an open fire each night was also extremely enjoyable.

Weekend Trip to Creekside Container Cabin
I was in town for a few days working in Natchez and decided to book this cabin for a nature getaway, since I’d previously stayed in hotels and wanted a different experience. The drive to and from Natchez was easy and manageable. I stayed two nights, and the cabin had everything I needed. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the AC was ice-cold—perfect after a hot day outside.
Zach went above and beyond by providing plenty of firewood and bottled water, which made the stay super convenient. I didn’t need to leave the cabin for anything. The location is very secluded; I didn’t see another person the entire time, yet I still felt completely safe. Zach stayed in regular contact throughout my stay, which made me feel especially secure and cared for as a solo traveler.

Weekend Trip to Creekside Container Cabin
The container cabin was great! The walk to the creek is nice and there were so many birds in the area. Unfortunately, I picked a rainy weekend, so I didn't get to enjoy the outdoors as much as I wanted to, but one night was clear and perfect for stargazing. The immediate area around the cabin is clear of trees so there's lots of sky to see while still being surrounded by nature. The cabin has all you need and definitely enough space for a couple and one or two kids. The drive to Natchez isn't too long and it's beautiful, so that was a bonus. I guess the rain interrupting my plans means I'll just have to book another stay.

Great scenic spot right on the creek. Cabin was great. Made a day trip to Natchez, which was only 40 miles. Great fire pit and outdoor furniture. Zach was a great host. This will be a great place to visit in the warmer months to swim in the creek. We will definitely be back!

Base Camp is top notch. Amazing tiny space with incredible attention to detail in the woods a stone’s throw from a picturesque sandy creek. I brought my 2 youngest boys for the weekend and we had the perfect mix of wilderness and comfort. Cooked all our meals in the fire pit and grill but had the luxury of showers and a big comfy bed and central heat to sleep. Zach was an incredibly responsive and helpful host. This was my first time using Hipcamp and it was a breeze.

Weekend Trip to Kickin' it in the Butte
Ginny and Scotty were very friendly and hospitable. I was on a friend's trip with 3 others. We rented the RV on site which was perfect for our overnight stay. The RV was so cute and had everything we needed. We went to Pat's for dinner and ordered Ginny's recommendation - the crab cakes and the seafood gumbo with okra - Delish! Before the stay, they answered many questions and were even ready to act as a shuttle for our kayak camping excursion on Bayou Berard. I would come back and have already recommended this place to others.
