If you’re looking to escape the crowds along South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Point Lowly is a good place to start. Jutting out into the Spencer Gulf, this rocky peninsula sits midway between Fitzgerald Bay and Whyalla, about an hour’s drive from Port Augusta. Follow Port Bonython Rd all the way to the tip to reach the landmark Point Lowly Lighthouse, cool off with a swim at the secluded Point Lowly Beach, or hike the rugged Freycinet Trail along the coast. There’s space for big rigs and motorhomes at Point Lowly Camping Area, which has a toilet block, cold showers, and easy access to the marina. Alternatively, there’s a free camping spot to the north at Fitzgerald Bay. For powered sites, check into one of the holiday parks or caravan parks in Whyalla instead—both have amenities such as BBQ areas, camp kitchens, laundry facilities, and dump points.
