One of two car accessible campgrounds in the park, Kipahulu Campground sits on a grassy area just above the ocean.

It’s located on the east side of the island, accessible via the famous Road to Hana, and is a favorite among the locals for its warm breezes and sounds of crashing waves that make it all the way to the campsites. Camp is only a short walk to choice destinations like Oheo Gulch and Seven Sacred Pools. Drinking water is available at the Kipahulu Visitor Center restrooms and two general store in Hāna (10 miles away) will get you basic supplies. Your best bet is to come prepared for rain, intense sun, mosquitoes, and jaw-dropping beauty!

The property is located on Maui island in the Kula district on the drier side of Haleakala. In days before western contact the area was heavily forested with native plants and trees and rainfall was abundant. The native Hawaiian grew bananas, taro and sweet potato. After Western contact businessmen mostly from the United States developed huge tracts of land for ranching and farming which cleared the native forests and destroyed the eco system from the mountain to the sea. Many of the Hawaiian people moved away nearer to the towns and immigrant Chinese laborers from the ranches and plantations moved in. The Chinese brought in the Wattle tree to plant for firewood as these trees grew very fast. These are the majority of the trees that you see today. As part of the Chinese immigration, the founder of modern China, Sun Yat Sen lived here for a time and planned his revolution to overthrow the last Chinese Dynasty. There is a park dedicated to him nearby.We have picnic tables a propane grill, a fire pit and a covered gazebo that is shared with 3 cabins This site is located at the 2800 ft altitude and the temperature at night can range from mid 50 to mid 60 degrees F. If you are planning to go to Haleakala, we are about 45 -60 minutes to the summit. We are also on the south side approach to Hana. There is a great restaurant for breakfast and lunch about 10 minutes away in Keokea town called Grandma's Coffee house.

We are a 5th generation family farm on the slopes of Haleakala, located in the old farming area of Olinda, just a 3 mile drive up from historic Makawao town. Our great grandfather purchased a 40 acre ranch in 1957 as his retirement, homestead dream. With rolling hills of pastures bodering a 1000 acre state forest, our farm is the ideal location for a secluded camping getaway with ocean views and Maui. Sadly, our property was hit severely by the August 2023 fires caused by downed electric lines. Your support of camping on our family farm helps us recover little by little and help us maintain such a huge responsibility of weeding invasive trees and weeds, along with repairs and fence building after so much loss.

Just being on the property is a local experience in itself. Everyone who sees it is blown away by the location and its untouched beauty full of lava rock and Hawaiian foliage. 11 Acres and it’s right by the coast. You can set up your tent or park your vehicle right at the coastline to camp while checking out the amazing view and hearing the waves crash right by you/or under you. The property doesn’t have WiFi, but right down the road a couple miles away there is free WiFi. The property has water catchment suitable for showering and washing dishes, but no filter for drinking water. We are in the middle of updating all that. You may fish at our campground. You may have a fire at our campground. You may bring your whole family to our campground. Each campsite needs to be purchased separately, even if you are apart of the same group. My Your two hosts are very friendly and offer tour guide/sightseeing services on the side. One of your hosts is a local who was born and raised in Hana, and still this day it is her home base. Your other host is a coconut tree climber and a very gifted handy man who can pretty much fix anything. We love making new friends and offering fresh coconuts to people who haven’t gotten to experience how amazing they are. Hana is known as the most beautiful town in the whole world, and we’re proud to live here and show aloha to people who are down to earth and respectful.

Please refrain from walking or driving Waipio road prior to or after our meetup as the current road safety restrictions prohibit all non-Hawaiian island residents from entering the valley without a local escort. Wild horses, birds, pigs and farmers are commonly scene throughout the valley. When surf and ocean conditions allow you may enjoy kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, surfing and seasonal whale and dolphin watching. As camp hosts we will provide the best guidance during your stay and are available for more intimate one on one assistance with your choice of activities should you need. Please specify what your intentions for this camp experience are during our meeting at the valley lookout. As active farmer gardeners we are seeking extra hands in work projects and welcome long stay extensions involving a work trade agreement. Be sure to let us know if you are interested in this option to extend your stay. Although it may be perfectly fun and fabulous to camp in the rain, extreme rain and high flood water conditions may result in a cancelation of your reservation. The campsite is part of the Waipi'o Lodge, which has three bedrooms and a common space living room. Our camping guests are welcome to use the outside kitchen, covered lanai, and Lodge bathroom. We also have high speed Wi-Fi. Our guests tend to be excellent company, usually visiting from Europe, the US Mainland, Australia and beyond. To all guest you must wait at the lookout until i arrive to guide you into the Valley. Aloha and welcome to Spring Side Hale Surrounded by 2,500-foot cliffs, a journey into the Valley of the Kings requires a steep hike or 4x4 (four wheel drive). Now however, the valley is mostly wilderness interspersed with taro fields (Taro is a traditional Hawaiian staple food) and a couple of dozens of inhabitants. Waipiʻo Valley Road is closed to non-residents. Visitor access to the valley floor and the subsequent valleys is only possible as part of a tour or if you know someone in the valley. The Waipiʻo Lookout is still accessible for everyone. Waipio Valley is a stunning scenic destination with a black sand beach, beautiful waterfalls and Hawaiian historical & cultural significance. It is a very spiritual place of healing, a place of connection with nature and a walk through the past, where time ceases to exist.
