Despite being one of the larger campgrounds in Kings Canyon (there are 157 individual sites and 2 group sites), the high elevation means nice temperatures in the summertime and the sites are nicely spaced. This campground is really an ideal car-camping spot, which is nice if you are planning to cover ground during your trip. Also located near Grant Grove, it makes a nice jumping-off spot to explore the park, no matter how you decide to travel. The campground is first-come, first-serve, but generally does have available spots, making it a nice choice for a last minute trip. As with almost every camping spot in this park, you will want to bring or rent a bear locker so critters don’t get into your camping snacks before you do. As weather can affect whether a campground is open or not, always be sure to call 559-565-3341 before you go to double check.

Swimming in North Fork Tule River, miles of hiking trails on ranch. River Ridge Ranch goes from 1,000' elev. to 3,000' elevation. Hike right on the ranch. We are between Sequoia National Park (about an hour) and the Giant Sequoia National Monument (16 miles to groves up Hwy 190 and no entrance fee). Choose from individual tent sites, group tent sites, tiny cabins. the 5-acre Compound or the Entire Ranch. We occasionally host small, thoughtful, low impact weddings. Please inquire. There are 33 giant sequoia groves in our Southern Region of the Giant Sequoia National Monument, some easily driven to, and some remote. Our ranch is a nature preserve and an education demonstration site, teaching sustainable and regenerative land use practices. River Ridge Institute, our non-profit, hosts a variety of events for the public. Please note: you are expected to leave the ranch and kitchen area as you found it, i.e., dishes washed thoroughly and dried and put away, recycling separated from trash, food scraps in compost buckets, sticky marshmallow removed from forks and surfaces (ick!). Homesteaded in 1859, owned by the Negus family from 1909-2000. Barbara and I bought it to save it from subdivision and it's now protected by a Conservation Easement and acts as a community center for the arts, music, poetry, gatherings and outdoor education. This is a essentially a private campsite with a million dollar view during the day, and wonderful stargazing at night! We welcome dogs and don't charge additional fees for you to bring your dog(s) to camp. The park allows dogs into the park BUT NOT ON ANY TRAILS! (Only the national “forests” allow dogs on trails, not national parks.) PLEASE, let us know you are bringing dog(s), when you request to book. We currently have 2 dogs - our boy Chance is a 6yo Husky Doberman mix; and we rescued and are fostering a (approx 3yo) Great Dane, Winston! Unfortunately, we can NOT dog sit your dog(s) while you are in the park having 2 large male dogs in our house. Also you can not leave the dog alone in the campsite. We are in Three Rivers - the southern Ash Mountain gateway to the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Our town has some wonderfully unique restaurants, creative shops and even a delicious brewery with seating next to the River! Our hillside property has great Mountain View’s and the driveway turns directly off of Sierra drive, four miles past the town center (3R post office) and just 2 miles from the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks entrance. There’s even a convenience store a quarter mile away! It's conveniently located and easy to find! You can (seasonally) hear the tranqual sounds, or all out roar of the flowing Kaweah river from across the street. Sorry, there is NO river access from this campsite. You can go to Slick Rock Recreation area, Lake Kaweah or into the parks to swim, boat, fish and more. Lake Kaweah is about 8 miles away. You drive around it after you top the hill entering Three Rivers. My wife Elizabeth and I bought our log home in 2015 and we have been dreaming and adding here ever since! Our dog Chance chases all the fun wildlife off of our property. In addition to deer, we have seen fox, bob cats, an Ocelot, too many coyotes, wild turkeys and bear crossing an animal highway along our upper hillside property line. Hawks, hummingbirds, quail, blue birds, woodpeckers and yellow bellied finches are regularly seen here as well. We have had turkey families coming through frequently recently! Owls have been heard; but not seen. We love our country home and mountain views, and look forward to sharing them with you!

With that, wildfire prevention is a high priority. We have a lot of projects we have started and could use all the help we can get! A seasonal 2 acre pond. We are about 25mi from sequoia and Kings Canyon right off the Highway 180 and a close drive from restaurants, stores. Beautiful views. We strive to make sure you have an amazing experience in the outdoors. We are still working on making the campground 100% so sorry in advance but what we are lacking we will make up for it with making your experience memorable hope to meet everyone soon P.S I got 6 things ask you to do while you are here 1.Enjoy your time here 2. If you need anything or have concerns say something ( I will try to accommodate the best I can) 3.Have fun 4. Only TP in toilets please 5. Make memories 6. Be respectful to your neighbors ( Get to know them. I don’t really have quite hours just keep in mind some ppl might be waking up early to hike in the park)

Wonderful campsites at the sunset campground. Absolutely gorgeous views of stars while lying in my tent. Great camp hosts. Only a 2-3 minute drive from Grant Grove village with a camp store with anything you could ever need while camping. Only a 15 minute walk from the Legendary General Grant Tree. If you stay in sunset campground make sure to take a walk to see such an enormous tree.

We will not revisit Sunset: the restrooms are very dirty, often clogged, many of the visitors are very inconsiderate (very noisy after 10pm, loud talking while preparing for early starts starts after 5am) and letting their trucks run for half an hour starting at 6am.

One of my favorite campgrounds in one of my favorite parks. If you or a member of your party is disabled, the campground has two fully accessible sites (116 and 26) and some of the sites around them might work too. Beware though - many of the other sites have steep inclines and non-accessible restrooms. I personally love site 116 (and some others near it that I can't recall) because the accessible walkway to the accessible restroom is just lovely. Sunset Campground fills up really early, so good luck reserving a spot! As of today (April 2021), they only allow booking one month in advance, so stake out the website at 7AM PST one month from your camping date to secure your spot!

Last year we booked for August and will definitely be back! so it's strange that this site says that it's first come first served. check the park website. Sunset Campground earns its name as the show going down on the west side of the campground is not to be missed! However, if you manage to secure one of those coveted sites, plan to be inundated the rest of camp. We found it nice as we met our neighbors :) Sunset is close to much in the grant grove area, including General Grant, panorama point, and from there you can hike to the park ridge trail to fire lookout. This campground has toilets, trash and I water. Please also be sure to use the bear lockers provided to protect yourself and the bears!

The site lists this as a first come, first served camp ground, but that is not the case. The park service website takes reservations. Not sure if there is any point showing up on dates that the website shows as fully booked. Crystal Springs and Azalea are first come first served only, while Sentinel sets aside some sites for walk ins. This is a great website for privately run campgrounds, but for public campgrounds, I would not make it my primary source of information.

We showed up on a Friday morning in July without a reservation and had our pick of about 4 sites that were still open.
