Ash Creek Canyon Preserve

47mi from Aspen Campground · 10 sites · Tents, RVs, Lodging

Ash Creek Canyon is more than a place to camp — it’s a hidden world reopened after nearly a century of quiet. Tucked within the Tonto National Forest, this privately owned canyon and historic mining town have remained untouched by the public since 1945. Today, the gates are open once again, inviting adventurers to experience one of Arizona’s most pristine and biologically rich landscapes. Here, towering canyon walls cradle lush greenery, native wildlife, and the gentle flow of Ash Creek as it winds through the valley. Scenic campsites sit along the water’s edge, offering peaceful views and direct access to hiking trails that lead through diverse ecosystems recognized by Arizona Fish & Game for its exceptional biodiversity. At the heart of the canyon lies Chrysotile, a long‑forgotten mining town frozen in time. Its remnants add a sense of mystery and history to your stay — a rare chance to explore a piece of Arizona’s past in a setting few have ever seen. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or experiencing the outdoors for the first time, Ash Creek Canyon offers a blend of tranquility, adventure, and discovery. Set up your tent beneath star‑filled skies, wander through untouched wilderness, or simply relax beside the creek as the canyon walls glow at sunset. This is nature at its most authentic — a place where adventure meets peace, and where every visit becomes a story worth telling.

According to legend, sometime around 1876, the partners decided that there was not enough room for both of them and one of them should leave. They decided to settle this issue over a game of "Seven Up" (with the winner taking the ranch and the loser leaving.) After the game seemed to have no winner in sight the game reached it's climax when Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." At this point Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs, and declared "Show Low" it is! Welcome to the edge of the high desert. Set at the very end of a quiet dirt road, this 230-acre private property offers rare access to vast open space, dramatic canyon views, and true solitude. Located about 30 minutes off pavement, the drive in is part of the experience. A medium-clearance vehicle is recommended, though high-clearance 4x4 is not required. The final mile becomes a bit rough at a few spots that cross sandstone, but there are no major obstacles for a standard truck or SUV. Off-road or higher-clearance travel trailers are welcome, provided they are not excessively long or low to the ground. The land itself is expansive and immersive. With over a mile of Chevelon Creek forming the southern boundary, the property drops into a massive canyon with 300-foot cliffs, sweeping views, and a sense of scale that feels more like a national park than private land. Advanced rock climbers have quietly begun establishing rappel routes and sport climbs into the canyon. While climbing access is informal and at your own discretion, the remoteness and openness of the area has long made it a haven for experienced adventurers. To the north, the property borders a large stretch of BLM land, offering endless room to explore, hike, and roam without crowds. Despite the size and openness, the land feels remarkably private. There are no neighbors in sight, no traffic, and no noise beyond wind, birds, and the canyon below. This is a place for those seeking something rare: – Overlanders looking for space, views, and quiet – Adventurers and climbers drawn to wild terrain – Retreat groups wanting privacy, inspiration, and room to breathe – Anyone craving the feeling of being far away, without being unreachable If you’re looking for polished amenities and tight campsites, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for scale, silence, stars, and a landscape that stops you in your tracks, you’ve found something special.
