Quiet, family-friendly camping and glamping on a farm in rolling Wiltshire countryside

The golden rule of camping at Marshwood Farm is: ‘don’t forget your torch’. On a moonless night out here in rural Wiltshire it gets dark. So dark, in fact, that the area has been classified as an International Dark Sky Reserve. To the likes of you and I who just want to pitch a tent somewhere pretty near Stonehenge, what does that mean? It means, firstly, that in order to protect the dark skies there aren’t any lights to show the way to the loo – hence the advice on torches. And, secondly, it’s an amazing place for stargazing.

Marshwood Farm Camping is not only under protected skies but on protected land too; in the Cranbourne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a landscape of rolling hills, chalk grassland, rivers and ancient woodland and it has one of the lowest population densities in the south west. You’ll certainly have no neighbours out here, save for the farming family who run the place, their 400 sheep and fellow campers.

There are just six camping pitches and two pre-pitched bell tents in the main family-friendly camping field. Then, a little more tucked away, just up the track are two lovely shepherd’s huts for couples. These are fully equipped and each have their own compost loo and shower shack outside, so you can stay secluded if you want to. The main field is more sociable, with a shared utility barn featuring hot showers, flushing toilets and a kitchenette. There’s space to sit undercover here too, great if it rains or if it gets too hot out in the south-facing field, which is a bit of a sun trap in good weather.

So back to that packing checklist; you’ve got your torch, you’ve packed your camping kit and you’ve even thrown in the suncream. If you’ve got an English Heritage Card you won’t want to leave that behind either. All of history seems to be here. There’s Elizabethan Longleat and medieval Waldour Castle. There’s the Gothic cathedral in Salisbury with Iron-Age remains and Roman ruins nearby at Old Sarum. And, of course, we’re leaving the best to last; less an elephant in the room than a megalith on the Salisbury plains: Stonehenge. It’s the best-known prehistoric monument in Wiltshire and the world and it’s just 13 miles from the campsite. No-less-mysterious Avebury is not far off either. How they got there is anyone’s guess; one to ponder under Marshwood Farm’s dark and starry skies.

Bluebell Shepherd's Hut

100%
(2)
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 2
Tucked away at the far end of the campsite we have two traditional, hand-built Shepherd’s Huts, perfect for a cosy getaway. The huts are truly off grid.  They are powered by solar panels; each has its own private compost loo and share the amazing shower shack! (the outdoor shower) but it is only a 300-meter walk to the utility barn for an indoor bathroom and kitchen sink etc. Inside the huts: Each hut sleeps 2 in a double bed, all the bedding and sheets are provided and made up ready – this is easy camping. No need to worry about being cold, as each hut has a little wood burner. The huts have all the crockery/cutlery and basic cooking utensils, plus a little camping gas stove and kettle.  All you should need to bring with you is your clothes and your food. Outside the huts: Each hut has its own private outside area, with picnic bench, outside chairs, BBQ, and fire pit. Breakfast hamper:  A delicious breakfast hamper will be delivered to your shepherd’s hut door each morning. With a choice of either continental or traditional farm house bacon and egg butties.  (Specific dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice).

Daisy Bell Tent

Bell tent · Sleeps 4
5 meter Bell Tent with 4 wooden beds with mattresses which can be set up as 4 singles or a double and 2 singles.  There is no bedding provided for this Bell Tent. Inside the Bell Tent you will find crockery for 4 people, simple cooking equipment and a camping gas stove and kettle.  There is one battery powered lantern and fairy lights in the tent, but I would suggest you bring your own torch to get to the utility barn in the night.  Outside the Bell Tent there is a sturdy wooden picnic bench for 4 people and a small shade sail.  There is plenty of room around the Bell Tent so you are more than welcome to bring your own gazebo and sun loungers etc.  There is shared toilets, showers, kitchenette ( microwave, toaster, kettle), washing up area, plugs to charge your phone and a small honesty shop to sell logs, kindling, BBQ fuel and a few emergency essentials like a bar of chocolate or a tin of soup etc.

Nearby attractions

Dinton Park is a short walk from Marshwood Farm and a nice place for walks and picnics in the grounds of a Neo-Grecian house (no access to the house). Grovely Wood and Langford Lakes Nature Reserve (01722 790770) are both lovely places to walk nearby, both around five miles away. The lakes are great for birdwatching and there’s a good café there too. Old Waldour Castle (01747 870487) is eight miles from the campsite and it’s just ten miles to historic Salisbury with its magnificent cathedral. Just outside the city you can visit Old Sarum (01722 335398), the ruins of a once thriving town and the site of the original Salisbury Cathedral. Stonehenge (0370 333 1181) is just 13 miles from Marshwood and Avebury Henge is 30 miles away. From Avebury you can walk to see several other Neolithic stone circles and monuments and also visit The Alexander Keiller Museum, which showcases finds and explains the known history. Longleat Safari Park, and the historic house and gardens are 22 miles from the campsite.

Food and drink

The closest pub is The Wyndham Arms (01722 716999) in Dinton, just over a mile away and recommended by your hosts. They also recommend The Kingfisher Café at Langford Lakes for coffee and cakes, overlooking the water and wildfowl at this nature reserve, five miles from the site. For supplies for the campsite, head to the Bird & Carter Farm Shop and Deli or the shops in Tisbury, five miles to the west, or Wilton, six miles east.
