A back-to-basics campsite just behind the dunes of Sea Palling beach in Norfolk

You can expect starry nights and sandy toes during a stay at The Acre as this back-to-basics campsite is just steps away from Sea Palling beach on the Norfolk coast. This simple site, run by friendly couple Gayle and Nicholas, offers an almost-wild camping experience for August only with countryside in one direction and an award-winning beach just over the dunes.

Far from the madding crowds of Great Yarmouth and the crab-eating ones of Cromer, Sea Palling is an altogether quieter spot for a stay on the Norfolk coast – although still popular in summer. Here, you pass the bigger caravan sites of the area to pitch your tent on one of 15 undesignated pitches and enjoy a taste of the simple life. A trailer of portable toilets, a fresh water supply and an open-air washing-up sink are the sum total of the facilities but, for those who will like it here, that’s enough. This place is not about spending time on site but about being as close to the beach as possible. And it’s a good one.

Separated from the site only by marram grass-covered dunes, Sea Palling beach offers sandy expanses and shallow waters protected by man-made breakwaters. The result is wonderfully calm waters for swimming, with crescent pools between each off-shore breakwaters like a perfect cove. The main area of the beach is watched by lifeguards in summer and, strolling further along the coast, it’s a popular spot with walkers and birdwatchers too. In fact if you’re into nature, you're in the right place. The Acre is just five miles from Hickling Broad Nature Reserve and the seal colony at Horsey Beach. Both are perfectly easy to access, too, with free walking routes that give great views of the wildlife on offer.

If it’s straightforward seaside fun you’re after, stay put at Sea Palling where there’s a small dose of everything you’d expect: ice cream kiosks, fish and chip shops, cafés and amusements. For more of that, head for the brighter lights of one of Norfolk’s bigger and more traditional seaside resorts, which are not too far away for a day trip. Cromer is about 20 miles north of here, Great Yarmouth 20 miles south.

It's a very peaceful setup here – the camping pitches are lined with conifers to one side and have lovely views over the fields. This is a great spot to spend a bit of time in nature, perhaps watching the sand martins fly around, seeing the sun rise to Star Gazing or spotting muntjac deer roaming the countryside. But back to that beach. It’s a fabulous spot for swimmers, birdwatchers, walkers, kitesurfers, surfers, jetskiers and divers alike, with plenty of space for kids (and dogs, if you're bringing the pets) to run off energy on the dunes. When you need to refuel, there are some good pubs and cafés nearby.

A bijou pop-up campsite literally steps away from an award-winning beach, The Acre is close to Sea Palling, on the north coast of Norfolk about 40 minutes' drive from Norwich. Once you’ve pitched up in the level meadow, the only thing that separates you from the sandy beach and the man-made coastal reefs is a stroll through the dunes covered in marram grasses. It's a very peaceful setup here – the camping pitches are lined with conifers to one side and have lovely views over the fields. This is a great spot to spend a bit of time in nature, perhaps watching the sand martins fly around, seeing the sun rise or spotting muntjac deer roaming the countryside. Cars are parked in the top half of the field, away from the pitches, to keep everything safe and quiet. As this is pretty much wild camping, facilities on site are basic, but you'll have access to portaloos and a washing-up area. To add to the back-to-nature vibe there’s no electricity, so it’s a good idea to bring torches to find your way around at night.
Nearby attractions

The Acre is in Sea Palling between the North Norfolk Coast and The Broads – both of which are within reach to explore but the sandy beach is, of course, the main attraction. The Acre will play host to a horsebox sauna during the season, too, so campers (and other visitors) can complement a dip in the cold sea with a sauna session (for an extra charge). For a change of scene, there are plenty more beaches to discover within easy reach. The quieter stretch of sand at Waxham is a mile south and Horsey Beach, where there’s a seal colony, is a couple of miles further. It takes 35 to 40 minutes to get to the bigger seaside resorts at Great Yarmouth or Cromer, with plenty of other options in between. To explore quiet waterways and search for wildlife, head to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s reserve at Hickling Broad, four miles away, where you can take a boat trip. To keep younger kids amused try BeWILDerwood, the adventure park that’s 12 miles from site.

Food and drink

Hosts, Gayle and Nicholas, own the Beach Rock Bistro, which is a five-minute walk along the road. Its opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner so there's little need to go elsewhere – but if you fancy it there are other options: the Sandy Hills Snack Bar and Reefs Bar also offer snacks and pub grub to fill up on after an active day on the beach. The Star Inn and restaurant, four miles away in Lessingham, is well rated for food or for a really special meal out try the upmarket Ingham Swan three miles from the campsite.
