Tent pitch camping and wild glamping in a Sussex woodland hideaway

There’s camping, and then there’s off-grid camping. Beech Estate Campsite is most definitely the latter – no electricity, no mobile phone signal and a wheelbarrow for weaving your gear through the trees to the tent. If that all sounds like too much effort, then you may want to move on in search of something more suitable. If it sounds like the perfect escape, you’re in for a real treat.

Beech Estate is one of two campsites from the 'Pegs and Pitches Camping' group – the others being a bell-tent-only affair at Wild Boar Wood in West Sussex. The Beech Estate site is the larger of the two. Tent pitches here are nestled among the trees or spread out in individual clearings and private spaces. The woods of the estate spread, in total, across some 2,000 acres. If that doesn’t sound like camping heaven already, then just wait for the punchline: the 600 acres of woodland on which the campsite is located are for the exclusive use of guests to walk, mountain bike and generally run wild. The forest is all yours.

For those who really want the most private spots, additional ‘faraway’ woodland pitches are available on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. There are also eight wild-glamping bell tents, each with its own separate clearing, which come complete with beds, chairs, a picnic table, cookware, a firepit, logs and an eco cooking stove. It’s fair to say that these are functional rather than luxuriously appointed, but then that’s just what you’d expect in this off-grid, back-to-basics paradise.

This is a booking for a tent pitch within the lovely tree enclosed Woodland Meadow at Beech Estate. The area is usually reserved for groups of 10-15 families but when not booked we open the meadow for individual bookings. We allow just four or five very large pitches (so large tents are no problem) - each with a fire pit - in a huge space overall of about 90 metres by 35 metres. There is a compost toilet and a fresh water point located in the meadow. Campsite has great facilities, as clean as it is possible to be and it set in a beautiful location. Pitches are maintained well. Staff were friendly on arrival and talked me through where my pitch was as well as giving me a large wheelbarrow to take my stuff to my pitch. Any extras like wood and kindling were waiting for me. There are even games to borrow and limited food and drink to buy. I was a returning customer as I knew it was a great site. However, there was a lot of screaming and shouting from one family past curfew on both nights, which I know was mentioned to staff by other guests as I heard when I walked past. However, no one went to speak to them. I received a generic text message sent to all visitors asking for the noise to be kept down 3 hours after leaving camp on my check out day, which is when I got connection back again. No one has connection in the woods so a better way to keep people quiet may be needed. Maybe going to ask them to keep it down. It was relaxing sitting by a campfire in the woods but would have been more relaxing without the screaming until 11pm. Other than that, a lovely return trip.

We had a great time at Beech Estate; really stunning location nestled in the woods! Each pitch feels very self contained with it's own fire-pit and plenty of space. We didn't get a chance to try the walks listed on the site because we had a full itinerary, but would love to come back and do them next time. Hot running water and regularly clean facilities made a real difference too. The bucket showers were fun and much better than we expected! Highly recommended.

Tranquille camping spot in the beautiful woods. My allocated pitch was very secluded and perfect a weekend break away from the concrete jungle. Check in was easy and informative, pre ordered logs and firefighters at reception for me to collect. Plenty of large wheelbarrows to ferry equipment to the pitch. Yellow trail walk was closed promptly informed via email and given two alternative routes. I am a female solo camping and felt safe at all times. Would thoroughly recommend.

The showers and bits are great and the areas are clean and the forest and shrubs around each spot isolate you nicely, staff are lovely. BUT sadly rats are very aware of dinner time and as soon as you cook they crowed your camp site. We left a night early after not wanting to face fending them off another dinner time. There is, as others say a fairly busy road near by and your can hear cars and a-lot of air plans as well. Its very well kept but there seems to be some inherited disadvantages to the area its self that make it less that ideal and not worth £50 a night

A brilliant site hidden away in a big forest. Each plot was surrounded by forest and had it's own secure campsite fire for BBQ etc. Facilities were excellent and the greeting from reception polite and professional. Will definitely return next year!!

We had a lovely time at this scenic campsite. The only downsides were chatty kids nearby until 11 pm and some thorny weeds on the path to P12. If the staff could add some smiles to their pleasant faces, this would be the perfect spot to relax with welcoming people around!

Absolutely fantastic wardens, beautiful landscape, I have never felt more safe and comfortable in a wilder camping environment, such a great experience especially for my boyfriend who has never camped before and fell in love with the whole week, woodlands and simple way of life. I’ve camped a lot throughout the years on the basic field sites but this was just unbeatable. We will be back!

This is a gorgeous place, one of a kind as far as my experience is. The plots are surrounded by trees and are quite private. My chosen plot was the furthest away and most private. The walk to the toilets took me some time as I went slow, and is uphill - so be aware of that. I enjoyed the exercise and walking through woods to get to there and do washing up - so for me isn't a negative. The facilities are really good - flushing toilets, bucket shower (you decide temperature) and washing up stations. Boards with suggested walks and activities. The area has tons to do, but likewise can just do a walk and come home and cook on a fire. Lots of drinking water stations. Wheelbarrows to move items. I loved it and hope there are more places similar to this that I can find.

Lovely pitch right at the edge of the campsite, I would try to book this pitch again in future. The grill and ditch oven hire was brilliant and we only wish we could have made more use of them. Log purchases were a must because we went through nearly two bags a night! Theres something about sitting under the stars with a fire crackling in front of you. We will be back soon for more bucket showers!

Lovely campsite. Facilities were really clean as well as eco friendly. Water points dotted around all the woods and my solo pitch was very quiet at night. Just some sounds of happy family campers from neighbouring pitches during the day. I didn’t get to explore as much as I would have liked as it was pouring but it was nice sitting in my tent in my little meadow. Wheelbarrows were a great touch for moving stuff from your car and I pre-ordered a bag of wood which was waiting for me (although they were a bit big - several were the entire circumference of the birch). The only thing that was missing was a couple of stumps that were in the picture on the website, which would have been great to use as a seat or even a table. As a solo backpacker, I couldn’t bring a chair and only had a sit mat. The grass was too long and wet for sitting so I only had inside my tent or perch on the edge of the fire pit. All in all, a great stay and I’ll definitely be back.

Incredible campsite - idyllic surroundings and well located for days out to Hastings and Battle. Recommend walks to the local pubs (The Squirrel takes 30 mins, The White Hart takes about 45/1hr). Facilities extremely well maintained. The wardens are also extremely responsive and helpful if you have any issues. Will definitely come back!

Get away from it all by pitching your tent among the trees at our campsite in the wonderful 600-acre Beech Estate Woodland in Sussex or take it even easier with a stay in one of our 'Wild Glamping' bell tents. The off-grid campsite has just 30 total pitches, including our forest tent pitches and faraway pitches for real camping, as well as our 'wild glamping' pre-erected bell tents. The campsite is located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Campfires are allowed on all pitches and bell tents and the privately-owned forest is yours to explore. Forest Tent Pitches: set inside the woodland. Various pitch sizes including single pitches, double pitches, mini-group pitches for up to 4 or 5 families and a larger group option. Faraway Tent Pitches: Set in the forest further from other campers. Including single pitches, two double pitch and a mini-group pitch option for up to 6-8 families. Hammock Pitches: set in the trees. Glamping Bell Tents: The option of 2-4 bell tents set on adjoining pitches. Group Glamping and Camping Combination: There is the option of combining your own pitched tents with our ready-pitched glamping bell tents. There are a maximum of 3 bell tents within a close range of each other that can be combined with 2-3 other pitches. Large Group Option – Woodland Meadow (10 to 15 Families): The Woodland Meadow is ideal for a larger group of families wishing to pitch their own tents together. There's room for 30 odd tents right in the woods plus 8 of our 'wild glamping' bell tents, which each fit a couple comfortably or 2 adults and up to 4 kids. Inside, you’ll find comfortable beds, and all your camping kit. Unique bucket shower systems, eco toilets and flushing toilets. Please note: the campsite is off grid and so has NO ELECTRICITY. We won't be the right place for you if you're after hot tubs and butler service, but if you are looking for a back to nature experience with campfires we're the perfect place The woodland offers limitless walks, forest rises for bike-riding and areas for kids to make dens and run wild. We do ask for all groups (of four or more adults) to please contact before booking - so we can share our group rules, and ensure we can place you all close together.
Nearby attractions

Beech Estate lies right in the heart of East Sussex and is excellently situated to drive to many of the regions top attractions. The historic town of Battle (1066, and all that) is just three miles away. Cosmopolitan Hastings, home to the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe, is also a short-drive away. A few miles down the A271, you'll find the historic village of Herstmonceux. Besides its historic windmill, visitors flock the Observatory Science Centre and the Tudour opulence of Hertmonceux Castle. If you're planning a day trip further afield, the stunning Seven Sisters Country Park is well worth a visit. Its chalk cliffs and lush, rolling hills are the quintessential Sussex scene and nearby Eastbourne has buckets of timeless seaside charm.

Food and drink

The White Hart Inn (01424 838382) in Netherfield serves up classy pub grub in a truly beautiful location. Visitors can expect a friendly welcome and some great seafood fresh from the Sussex coastline at The Netherfield Arms (01424 838282). The Squirrel Inn has a fine selection of ales (including local tipple Harvey's) and has live music every month.
