Two yurts with hot tubs in the Cumbrian countryside just a mile away from Hadrian’s Wall

There’s little chance of getting confused about what’s on offer at Hadrian’s Wall Country Yurts. The clue is in the name and the answer to the first question that springs to mind is: one mile. That’s right – it’s just one mile from the yurts to the wall; a walk of about 20 minutes along quiet Cumbrian lanes. While proximity to this World Heritage wonder is the major selling point of this two-yurt site, it’s not the only one. This place is also just six miles from the Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 miles from the Northumberland National Park and 30 from the northern edge of the Lake District. In short; it’s a good spot.

You won’t forget it either as, on a clear day, you’ll have views of peaks in both the Pennines and the Lake District from your yurt. In fact, you can even marvel at them whilst enjoying the steamy warm waters of the wood-fired hot tubs that sit outside each of the twin 18-foot yurts on this tiny site in Border Country. Both are set up with a proper double bed and camp beds for kids and each warmed by a wood-burning stove. On cold days it’s perfectly cosy and, on warmer ones, you can have a campfire outside instead. There’s a drinking water tap and a compost loo for each yurt — as well as a shared hot-water shower.

The two yurts can be booked together or separately but the clever configuration and 40-foot gap ensures enough privacy even though they share a paddock. The paddock is one of three on this two-and-a-half acre smallholding area with resident chickens; the permanent home of Ian, Caroline, and their two children. This hardy crew loves the outdoors, cycling and walking as well as enjoying the occasional wild swim.  They consider the Northumberland National Park and the Pennines within walking or cycling distance, though you may not — but with the distances not so very great it is a good base for exploring outdoors whether you drive or travel under your own steam.

Either way, although the accommodation is certainly glamping, don’t expect the wilderness to have been tamed. The yurts are the perfect accommodation here; sturdy, cosy, and able to withstand the wind and weather that sometimes howls. Even the Romans gave up on this place – after leaving their edge-of-empire stamp on it. This brings us full circle, back to Hadrian’s Wall. If you want to visit one of the best-preserved parts of the wall and immerse yourself in the landscape without giving up on comfort, these country yurts are for you. They’re as suitable for couples who love walking as they are for outdoorsy families. Hadrian’s troops may have been eager to leave the area but, thanks to this well-thought-out little site, yours may not be.

We loved staying in the yurt! It was immaculately clean and very cosy and comfortable. Caroline was an attentive host and we felt relaxed and welcome. My son loved collecting eggs from the hens too!

Amazing spot!
We loved staying at Caroline & Ian's Hadrian's wall yurts! The yurts are incredibly cosy with the log burner on, and the wood fired hot tub is perfect for relaxing and viewing the surrounding quiet countryside or star-gazing if the sky is clear (which is was for us!). The kids loved it. The site is also great for kids with plenty of space to run around and also checking in on the hens to see if any new eggs had been laid. The kitchen area in the yurt included everything we needed and the games were an added bonus! Really close to some parts of Hadrian's wall and the ancient abbey at Lanercost. Highly recommended - thanks so much to Caroline and Ian for creating a lovely spot to get away and relax.

The best experience!!
What a weekend. Amazing experience staying in the Yurts. They are so much fun. The kids loved seeing the chickens each morning for eggs, horses in the fields and the most amazing stars at night. We were recommending the place while we were there to friends and family. They are very warm, spacious for a family of 4 we would happily visit anytime of year. We will be re booking for next year soon

From the host
Hadrian’s Wall Country Yurts offer style and comfort in North Cumbria close to the historic Hadrian’s Wall. Set in the rugged Cumbrian countryside the glamping site is small and quiet, around three quarters of an acre, yet spacious. The site has two insulated yurts, each offering a calm circular space complete with a double bed (plus two additional single beds), a wood burning stove, comfortable chairs and a BBQ. There is a small kitchen island within each yurt and a covered outdoor cooking area with gas stove outside. Both yurts have their own private wood-fired hot tub where you can relax and recharge under the stars. There is a large grassed area for games with family and friends and two firepits. Free range fresh eggs are available from the hens (enclosed) on site. Just help yourselves. The site is owned and run by Ian and Caroline and their two young children. We are all passionate about the countryside and enjoy being outside as much as possible.
Nearby attractions

You can explore three paddocks and visit the chicken to collect their eggs. The main attraction is Hadrian’s Wall, of course, which is just over a mile from site. It’s a walk of about 20 minutes to join Hadrian’s Wall Path, the national trail that runs the length of the wall. A great place to find out more about it is at Birdoswald Roman Fort (five miles away). Gelt Woods, and the Geltsdale RSPB nature reserve (01697 746717), are seven miles away. Historic Carlisle, its castle (01228 591922), and the Cumbria Museum of Military Life are 13 miles away. Some of the best mountain biking in the UK can be found at the 7stanes trail locations just north of the border, the closest is Newcastleton just over 20 miles from site. The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northumberland National Park, and the northern edge of the Lake District are all within driving distance (six, 10, and 30 miles from site, respectively).

Food and drink

Glampers can benefit from country life with fresh and free eggs from the site’s chickens and there are bacon, sausages, and burgers for sale too. The nearest watering hole is at The Old Vicarage Brewery in Walton Village, three miles away which serves its own ales (and a host of other drinks too) on a Friday or Saturday night. Alternatively, you can get cocktails delivered from the Lakes Horsebox Bar (07500 442833). Brampton (seven miles away) has a great chip shop (07486 953552) and is a good place to pick up supplies as it has a Co-op and a selection of independent shops. For a meal out, Ian and Caroline recommend the Duke of Cumberland (01228 670341) or, for a special occasion, the Penton Bridge Inn (01228 586636).
