Lakeside camping with streams, rope swings and farmyard animals in rural Cornwall

‘There’s very little to do here, no bells and whistles’, says Tony Hedges, proprietor of Pleasant Streams Farm Camping. Yet this is indeed a pleasant field in which to pitch a tent. Campfires are encouraged, and often the crackle-pop of wood on the fire is the only noise in the evenings here. There may be no clubhouse or kid’s club but, apart from that, we’d say Tony is underselling the place. There’s quite a lot to do here; both on site and off it.

There’s a lake in the centre of one of the two camping fields which not only attracts wildlife, but also beckons you to hop in the rowing boat for an afternoon afloat. There are streams to paddle in and ropes to swing on and there’s a summerhouse with books and games for rainy days. Then, of course, there are the animals: Matilda, Bluebell and Rosie the miniature goats, Rodney and Del Boy the pigs, and the chickens and ducks that lay fresh eggs for your breakfast. And that’s not even counting the field mice, owls, herons, pheasants and badgers.

Off site it’s a ten-minute stroll to the local pub in Sticker, four miles to the coast, five miles to St Austell and eight miles to The Eden Project. But that’s not the half of it. The campsite is at the gateway to the Roseland Peninsula, a lovely part of the south Cornish coast. Most people that come here explore by biking along the nearby Pentewan Valley Trail or hiring the campsite’s sea kayak and heading for the beautiful coast around Gorran Haven and Charlestown.

Back on site after a day’s exploring and it’s back to basics for most of us but listen up – what’s that? A faint tinkle of bells and a very quiet whistle? In 2020 Pleasant Streams Farm introduced three spacious, kitted-out bell tents. Sleeping four comfortably in proper beds with bedding, they each have an outdoor covered kitchen which has a camping stove, cool box and all the equipment you’ll need. Bell tents are in a quiet, tucked-away corner by a stream with a rope swing while campers with their own tents are spread freestyle between two meadows. Campers can choose between a flat spot in a sunny field or a lake-side pitch where you can watch dragonflies dance over the water. If this is doing very little, we like it rather a lot.

If you want the experience of real camping - sleeping under canvas, cooking outside under the trees, star gazing around a campfire, and waking up surrounded by nature - but with the luxury of a real proper bed and without having to lug everything with you, then our boutique bell tents are for you. Our five private and luxury bell tents have their own large private pitches, tucked away in quite corners of our wild and natural campsite in the Cornish countryside. Lilly comes fully equipped for a family of four, with its own a campfire area and cooking facilities. Lily is located on a large, flat, and sunny private pitch, surrounded by trees and overlooking a small lake. Equipment: - King sized bed with sprung mattress - Single day bed - used as a sofa and/or a single bed - Single pull out bed - All beds come made up with warm luxury bedding - Coffee table - 2 poof seats - 2 lanterns - Solar fairy lights - An outdoor kitchen in the trees, covered with a tarpaulin in case it rains.   The outdoor kitchen is a new Vango camp cuisine kitchen and a set of pine shelves, and comes with a 2 ring camping gas stove, gas supply, all cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery for four, a large water container, cool box, and washing up equipment. - A tripod BBQ (please bring your own charcoal) - An outdoor table and seating for four people - A fire ring (logs can be purchased on site for £5 a bag or you can bring your own) Rules: - The tent is fully equipped for 4 but it could fit 1 more guest but you must bring your own cot/bed and all equipment for them.  Please note any additional guests over 4 will be charged at the campsite's usual rates (£3 per child 4-14, £4 per adult) - The price includes parking for 1 car, additional cars will be charged at the campsite's usual rates (£5 per additional car) - You can pitch one additional small pop up tent or a gazebo at Lily for no additional charge. Larger or additional tents or extras will be charged at the usual rates.  The pitch space is large, so if you do want to come as a group there is space for one or two more family tents. Please contact us to discuss and agree. - No shoes in the tent - No smoking in the tent - Damages must be paid for - We love a good sing along around the campfire but please be respectful of other guests.  An acoustic guitar is fine but no loud music and keep the noise down after 10pm please. Guests at Lily can access and use all the main campsite facilities.  There are two basic wooden toilet and shower blocks on the campsite. The closest to Lilly are just around the corner, and have 3 compost toilets, a small sink for hand washing, 2 gas powered showers, and a drinking water tap. There is a second set of toilet/shower facilities with flushing loos and sinks a little further away in the main camping field. Please note there is no pot washing facilities on the site and instead guest are provided with washing up bowls and can collect water for washing up from the main tap.  Lily is off grid so no power but guests can charge devices at the farm house for a small fee.  Please note there is no wifi at the campsite and we're in a dip in rural Cornwall so mobile phone 4G reception and signal is not great. On the campsite there are 2 small lakes with free to use rowing boats.The lakes are filled with fish and plenty of wildlife, and children have hours of fun playing on the boats and catching tiddlers in nets. There are some pretty gardens, more rope swings, a small wood, and plenty of wildlife to see.  We also have some pet farm animals, including Rosie and Bluebell goats who stay near to Billy during the day in their grass pen, chickens, ducks, and a grumpy old pig (Del Boy trotter).  Our site is all about getting back to nature and experiencing real camping, there's no clubhouse, no set pitches and no road noise, just fields, streams and wildlife. 1 week minimum bookings in peak season and 3 nights minimum in low and mid season.

Billy Blue 6M Private Bell Tent

If you want the experience of real camping - sleeping under canvas, cooking outside under the trees, star gazing around a campfire, and waking up surrounded by nature - but with the luxury of a real proper bed and without having to lug everything with you, then our boutique bell tents are for you.  Our 5 private and luxury bell tents, Billy Blue, The Lilly Pad, Rose, Willow and Cherry Blossom all have their own large private pitches, tucked away in quite corners of our wild and natural campsite in the Cornish countryside.  Billy comes fully equipped for a family of 4, with its own a campfire area and cooking facilities. Billy is located on a large, flat, and sunny private pitch, surrounded by trees and next to a shallow stream with a rope swing and a small wooden bridge - perfect for playing Pooh sticks.  (Please note the bridge and rope swing are used by other guests on the campsite). Equipment: - King sized bed with memory foam mattress - Single day bed - used as a sofa and/or a single bed - Single Z-folding bed - All beds come made up with warm luxury bedding - Coffee table - Small shelving unit - Solar lights - Solar fairy lights - An outdoor kitchen in the trees, covered with a tarpaulin in case it rains.  The outdoor kitchen is sturdily hand-made from wooden pallets (think mud kitchen but for grown ups) and comes with a 2 ring camping gas stove, gas supply, all cooking equipment, crockery and cutlery for four, a large water container, and washing up equipment. - A tripod BBQ (please bring your own charcoal) - An outdoor table and seating for 4 people - A fire ring (logs can be purchased on site for £5 a bag) Rules: - The tent is fully equipped for 4 but as the tent is big it could fit 1 or 2 more children but you must bring your own cot/bed and all equipment for them.  Please note any additional guests over 4 will be charged at the campsite's usual rates (£4 per child 4-14, £5 per adult) - The price includes parking for 1 car, additional cars will be charged at the campsite's usual rates (£5 per additional car) - You can pitch one additional small pop up tent or a gazebo at Billy Blue for no additional charge. The Lily Pad -Emperor Bell Tent next to lake
Very spacious, quiet, well maintained campsite. The bell tent was very well equipped and the outside kitchen covered with a tarp was very convenient. Everyday frozen cooling elements are provided for the cool box. Great service! Lesley and Tony were super friendly and helpful. The kids had lots of fun playing and could wander on their own around the campsite. Can recommend staying here!

A fantastic campsite that is in the perfect location to explore some brilliant highlights of Cornwall. The site is spacious and yet private. Isn’t overwhelmed with pitches and has lakes that add a little something different to explore. The kids were safely able to go play and explore, finding delights such as the hidden tree house, horses, chickens and other animals. Nowhere was off limits on the site, owners were lovely and willing to chat to the kids about the horses etc. Amenities were brilliant, especially the hot showers!

We had a great week camping next to the Lillypad Bell tent (our friends were glamping) the campsite is so peaceful, the ducks were very sweet plus the pond and row boats was great fun for our 2 sons. I was a bit hesitant about using the compost toilets but they were very well maintained plus there are flushing toilets in the next field. The showers were hot and clean which is everything when you've been camping for a week. The owners were very helpful and let us charge our devices at their home for a small fee. I'd recommend visiting Charlestown and Megavissey Harbour plus football golf was fun. Will definitely stay again as so much to do in the area plus I loved how peaceful the campsite was.

Had an amazing camp! Pitches were large with loads of space and a fire pit (logs easy to buy). There was a tyre swing across a tiny steam next to our tent, so the small folk were happily occupied most of the time. Instructions were clear and it was an easy walk to Sticker to top up supplies at the local shop. Loads to do in the area too - beaches, Eden project, Lost Gardens of Heligan. An incredible site in a fantastic location. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much.

We found this place on the internet a bit by accident but we are so glad we did. This camp site is a peaceful little haven. Our children loved the animals espcially the ducklings and enjoyed roaming free around the site. The facilities are basic but were clean and the showers were hot so thats a bonus when camping! We loved it amd would highly reccomend, we are hoping to come back and stay in a bell tent one day soon!

It's a gorgeous site in a beautiful setting with the lakes full of wildlife. Sadly with many campers on site there is a need for better toilet facilities. The compost toilets weren't always pleasant to say the least. Just a little tlc would help.

The location is stunning, little to no road noise, just country wildlife. The ducks and their babies marching around all the tents entertaining old and young alike. The resident heron guarding the lake and his many fish hunting spots whilst basking in the sun. The evening open fire beside our tent became a highlight for our family of four, without an internet signal we actually talked, laughed and reconnected on so many levels. Roasted marshmallows helped too ! Looking across the fields at the many firepits was magical and helped to keep the flying biters away. Not a single nip for any of us even though we were pitched facing the lake. The small rowing boats, (3), are a very clever idea and our kids loved them. Their first introduction to boating in a small safe environment. The facilities, whilst described as basic are functional. They are tired, in poor repair, too few for the size of campsite and are not appealing to use. Ironically, the biggest upset is the lack of a sink to wash dishes. This seems like an easy fix. There is no doubt Tony the owner, ( and family ?), work very hard maintaining the site and kudos for their efforts but I can’t help thinking an investment in practical toilet/shower facilities would benefit everyone and make their life so much easier and pay for itself in very short order. It would certainly secure our future visits.

Our little family spent a wonderful week getting back to basics, playing frisbee, climbing trees, roasting marshmallows, gazing at the stars, boating on the lake and enjoying the sunshine amongst ducklings, owls, butterflies and dragonflies. This place couldn’t get more blissful if you are looking for an authentic family camping experience. Hot showers and flushing toilets are basic but totally fine. What it lacks in facilities it more than makes up for in charm and it’s beautiful setting. This is a superb base from which to explore Cornwall with so many gems right on your doorstep too. We will be back!

The facilities were ok with sometimes hot showers sometimes cold showers and there are not many facilities for the number of campers as well etc. but that's not the reason you would choose to come to this campsite. This is a wonderful place for a family friendly holiday. The lake adds to the magic of the place with kids enjoying their little bit of freedom. We have a very lively 4 year old with no sense of danger so the open water added an element of risk but we knew that before going. There was another field without the lake around it should we have wanted it. The children adored their stay watching the wildlife and there were so many lovely like-minded people on that campsite in search of the simple life and nature.

The reason for 5 stars is because everything lived up to our expectations. Although it states that check in time is 2pm we called at 10.30 to see if we could check in earlier and we were told we could come straight away . We chose our spot close to the dam and near enough to the toilet/shower block. Big plus was - Hot showers! No midges or mosquitos. Neighbours were considerate and friendly and kids well behaved. There is kindling and logs on site. Thoroughly enjoyed the ducks and ducklings wandering around camp and the chilled vibe. Will deffo come again.

Had a wonderful week in Billy Blue bell tent. Best pitch on the site, secluded and private. Campsite is very pretty, chilled and quiet after 10pm. Little kitchen well equipped. Had all we needed - bar some more anti-squirrel devices! Bathroom facilities basic but adequate. Owners friendly and easygoing. Would love to go back.

Me and my daughters had a lovely week at Pleasant Streams Farm. Beautiful surroundings with baby ducks, goats, lakes and rope swings! The compost loos were fine and the showers were great. We stayed in one of the bell tents and it was lovely. We had everything we could need for the week. We even had a welcome pack of wine, biscuits and marshmallows on our arrival! And the owners were so friendly and helpful. Also, lovely beaches and seaside towns in the area and only 30 mins drive from Newquay. Thanks for a lovely holiday!

Just home from a lovely 2 weeks staying here. After being a little cautious from some of the reviews, we were really delighted with our experience. Week one was a little cooler … week two the sun shine endlessly and we could have been in France. The site is indeed basic, and the facilities could do with a lick of paint and more frequent cleaning given the amount of campers… but nothing we couldn’t cope with. Kids had great fun exploring and being kids which was a joy to watch. And meant the adults could enjoy a glass of wine in the golden hour in peace! Like others have said… a little work and this place could be truly beautiful. The wood shed and storage caravan needs a good tidy up as it feels it lets the site down. And the jetty’s could do with strengthening!! I think as well, whilst pitch where you like is lovely - a few guidance rules would be very helpful to avoid arriving back from a day out to find a new tent a bit close for comfort. A few larger groups arrived too which caused a few noise issues so some gentle site management particularly in the evenings would be a bonus. All in all though a really lovely experience and for a bargain price. (FYI I had spoken to the farm prior to arriving to clarify my tent size, to avoid the nasty surprise that lots have had with being charged more. It would solve all problems to simply have the tent dimensions next to ‘small, medium and legs etc’ on the booking form to avoid confusion and a disappointing start to a holiday). May well be back. Thank you for our stay absolute perfect very affordable stay for a little family with lots of things to do with a short drive too them all. And the free roaming ducks and 2 lakes with boats and fish too feed. And I’ve heard people complain about the showers in previous post which I found strange cos they were more than amble for a camp site. There is absolute nothing too complain about here. When you come just pick your pitch and the owner comes too you when he gets the chance.

Absolutely adored staying here for the weekend. The campsite has basic facilities but the compost loos are good for the environment and were clean. There are also hot showers. The best part of this campsite are the beautiful little lakes, and the baby ducks running around gave the weekend a total blissful feel.

I loved everything about my stay. I can't really understand negative comments as the camp site is a hidden gem. We were lucky enough to pitch our tent near the lake, we watched geese and birds while drinking morning coffee. It was my first camping experience ever but I loved it. No power, no wi fi and lack of phone reception turned out to be a blessing rather then a problem. Of course there are no 5 star facilities but there is drinking water available, toilet facilities, and a shower. All in all it's a garm campsite:) We will be back of again in Cornwall

Place with big potential but seems owners take care more of money then customers. At first everything seems OK to me, I was told to pitch where you want. When I set up my tent member of staff came to me and said you must move your tent from here, it is only for glamping ( there is no sign is for glamping and I been advised to pick where i want) So I moved by advise. Second thing I been asked to pay more for my 3 person halfords tent! Which on coolcamp booking site been classified as medium tent, but they said is large!!! Really. (to be clear my tent is 220cm to 320cm). I thought is everything for now but I was wrong! Later on lady came with a van and she claimed I took her place for the van to park up! (to be clear at this time I pitch on the place showed by owner/staff). So I spent the night with van wheel parked in my tent entry. Lovely night I glad it wasn't my only camping on this trip but it was only one with bad taste. Like I said at beginning: place with big potential but also need big changes! not bad but far from good recommendion.

The write up sounded perfect, quiet and some sanctuary from the world for a few days...and our first night was idyllic, listening to owls and watching the bats...and then all this vanished in a screaming hoard of exuberant children whose parents relinquished all control, so that they ran wild through the site, having a great, but very loud, time until after 10pm. The ducks were banished from the lake by the yelling children who used the small boat, without lifebelt or bouyancy aids, well into the dark. The lake had no lifebelts to hand, and we all wondered what the Health and Safety issues would have been. Other adults were really concerned, shame their parents were not. Sadly, the next night was worse, and those parties who were trying to relax and have some quiet time had to get cross before the noise abated. Some management of the site was required. Open pitch-less camping sounds good, but several people left their tents to go out for the day, to find that someone had pitched a tent in their parking space beside their tent, or tents were pitched on the driveway, so they couldn't get back to their tents. Not good. Toilets were reasonable, but the composting ones ran out of compost by early afternoon, so nothing to cover the action with. Campfires were allowed, and logs normal price of £5 a bag, but again the H&S hazards in fetching these yourself from a cluttered barn were big. With a little tighter management this could have been a wonderful break, but instead we packed up a day early rather than face the noise and stress of another wild-child night. Sorry, but won't be back.

Such a lovely rustic, remote campsite with lots of outdoor fun for the kids…streams, lakes, wildlife and farm animals and the added bonus of a campfire in the evening. This is our second trip to Pleasant Streams and we will be returning for another adventure.

Thanks for a great week camping in one of your electric hook up spots. Very helpful, and an all round chilled time. Easy to visit either coast with great trips to Mevagissey, Charlestown, Truro, Perranporth, St Mawes, Falmouth and body boarding on Fistral beach Newquay. The gardens of Helligan are stones throw away! A great base to explore. Thanks!

Well I will start by saying the campsite is basic at best. I echo what others have said The compost toilets are hardly emptied and dirty with broken polystyrene seats . not good during a pandemic with no soap in the hand wash area outside to the showers and no where to wash up that is annoying During my stay it was a Very muddy field my car almost didn’t manage it And last note the pitches are not marked this can be annoying if someone’s selfish and spreads out Thank god I was only staying one night , this place has the potential to be a wonderful place if the facilities where a decent standard and marked pitches would be much better with some hard standing in places incase the cars trash it up The owners daughter and owner very kind and helpful people no issues there at all

Great quiet place by a lovely pond with sweet Muscovy Ducks being friendly. Loads to do nearby and it was great to be back in the evening by the tent and a lovely fire, toasting marshmallows.

My partner and I stayed here for a week. The little lake is super cute and you can camp where you like. The site and owner is really chill, and we loved the animals. The location also has great access to public transport. A bus goes from the nearby village which takes you all over Cornwall and trains from nearby St Austell take you all over Cornwall too - we thought we’d miss out by not having a car but actually we could go everywhere we wanted and all the people with cars could never park. The nearby Griggs country shop / restaurant serves great roasts, dinners and breakfasts - sad we only found that on the last day! It’s not luxury, but for 86 pounds for two for a week we think it was great : )

Get back to nature at Pleasant Streams Farm Camping. We offer peaceful and rustic camping in lovely rural surroundings with basic facilities and low prices. We are open only during August. At our small and friendly site you can experience ‘real camping’ with plenty of space, real campfires, pretty fields, shallow streams, small lakes with rowing boats and an abundance of wildlife. Our site is very relaxed; we don’t have set pitches so you can pitch your tent where you choose in our camping fields. We welcome families, groups and couples, anyone looking for a countryside retreat. Children especially love to explore our site, wading in the stream in wellies, rowing around the lake, looking for the farm animals or hunting for the hidden rope swings. We have five luxury bell tents, Rose, The Lilly Pad, Billy Blue, Willow and Cherry Blossom. They are perfect for families looking for a glamping option. We are tucked away in the countryside in mid Cornwall, a great base to explore the beautiful Cornish coast and attractions from. Our location is very quiet and peaceful, yet we are close to a village and town. The nearest beach is only a 10-minute drive and we’re at the gateway to the beautiful Roseland peninsular with more stunning beaches and pretty villages to explore. There’s always animals to meet at our farm, on our site you can see wild geese, owls, hawks, buzzards, herons, jays, rabbits, foxes, badgers, field mice, trout in the stream. Or you can meet our friendly animals, our miniature goats Matilda, Bluebell and Rose, our pigs Rodney and Del Boy and our Chickens and Ducks. We sell the Duck and Chicken eggs for your breakfast as well as a selection of home grown plants. Our ethos is simple and natural. Therefore we have no clubhouse or constant traffic noise and we are a real escape from everyday pressures. We offer simple shower and toilet facilities and plenty of space to enjoy your holiday. Unfortunately no pets are allowed. Campfires are permitted, in a limited amount of designated fire rings which are first come first served and sacks of logs are available for purchase. Please note we do not have a designated washing up area but you are welcome to take water back to your tent, so we recommend you bring a washing up bowl. Please note we do not have set pitches, so you book per tent size. Please be honest with your tent size and any extras (including booking a pitch space for any gazebos and tarps) as difference will be charged for upon arrival.
Nearby attractions

Explore the coast by kayak (on hire from the campsite for £25 per day), or freewheel along the Pentewan Valley Trail with Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire (01726 844242). The Lost Gardens of Heligan (01726 845100) is four miles away and The Eden Project (01726 811911) is about eight miles. The fishing village of Mevagissey and historic port of Charlestown are a short drive, both well worth a visit, with shops, cafes and restaurants to explore.

Food and drink

You can buy fresh eggs on site (if the ladies are laying) but if you don’t fancy cooking yourself, it’s a five-minute walk to Griggs Farm Restaurant which is especially good for breakfasts. It’s a 10-minute stroll to the Hewas Inn (01726 73497), which serves a traditional pub menu and a selection of good ales from St Austell Ales. The Polgooth Inn (01726 74089) – a five-minute drive away – offers a more contemporary choice, and an impressive range of cask ales. There’s a small shop in the village for supplies but for a bigger range of shops, as well as the St Austell Brewery, head for the town of the same name, five miles away.
