Back-to-basics camping on the edge of Bude

A mile from Bude, half a mile from the South West Coast Path, and midway between two of Cornwall’s best-loved sandy beaches is where you’ll find Cerenety Eco Camp. It’s a rustic little place that offers a great-value place to pitch a tent in a handy location for adventures around North Cornwall. If you’re after a perfectly-mowed pitch for your tent, look elsewhere. If you want bells and whistles, please choose another site. But if, on the other hand, you simply want a sustainable place to stay, Cerenety Eco Camp might just fit the bill.

The site exists to house campers in the simplest style alongside a menagerie of animals who’ve been rescued over the years. There’s a racehorse, alpacas, and a miniature Shetland pony alongside a changing cast of smaller animals (sometimes rabbits and lambs) and a tortoise or two. These guys, who live in the neighbouring paddocks, can all add something to your stay if you take the time to meet them. But you need to respect them and your other neighbours too. That means obeying the 10.30pm noise curfew, for example. It’s one of the only rules at this laid-back, off-grid place where campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits. Loos are composting, showers are solar powered, and washing up is all done in the open air. It’s simple, but everything works.

The site occupies a sloping field with surrounding hedgerows and views towards Bude. You can reach the town by walking along a canal tow path. There, you’ll find all the amenities you need as well as a sea pool, a museum and the vast sands of Summerleaze Beach. South of site, by a couple of miles, there are more of those at Widemouth Bay – but neither of these are the closest place to reach the coast. That is a short stroll away at Upton where you can join the coast path or scramble down to the shore.

Site 4 - Cerenety Eco Campsite
I stayed here with my husband and 2 friends in July. The site was perfect - laid back, quiet and we had plenty of space. It's a pretty location, just a lovely walk along the canal into Bude, and a short walk to the clifftops too. The toilet and shower facilities were great and well cleaned, and we particularly liked the wildlife pond. The lady running the site was lovely too.

Site 2 - Cerenety Eco Campsite
Nicely secluded campsite with a view down the hill to the town. The composting toilets & showers were basic, functional, pleasingly constructed from recycled parts :) Candida was a welcoming host. Recommended.l!

From the host
Peaceful location, just over 1 mile from Bude town & beaches & short walk from the Cornish Coastal path .Natural setting with some areas allowed to grow wild, encouraging wildlife. This is not for the campers who expect "bowling green" type pitches, or hard standing/electric hook up .but if you are looking for an easy going, back to nature setting, this is for you Solar showers & compost toilets further the eco ethos. Alpacas, ponies , tortoises live alongside the wild creatures in the wildlife pond. Plenty of space for children to run & play.
Nearby attractions

Cerenety Eco Camp is a mile outside the North Cornish town of Bude. You can head out on walks straight from site. Either head along country lanes and footpaths to reach the South West Coast Path in about 10 minutes (it’s half a mile away) or join the nearby canal tow path to walk into Bude. The canal is also a good place to paddleboard. If you haven’t got your own board, hire one from one of the surf schools. And, of course, there’s the surfing – both here in Bude on Summerleaze Beach or three miles down the coast at Widemouth Bay. Bude also has a sea pool and a small museum inside Bude Castle Heritage Centre as well as plenty of shops and eateries to visit. For a more dramatic and historic castle, head 30 minutes’ south in the car to visit Tintagel. The same distance in the other direction takes you to the cobbled, traffic-free streets of Clovelly.

Food and drink

There’s a veg patch on site and occasional fresh produce is for sale. Other than that, you’ll need to head into Bude for supplies or for a meal out – but it’s hardly a hassle as the town is just a mile away and has everything you might need: independent shops and supermarkets, fish and chips, cafes, pubs and restaurants too.
