Grange Wood Glamping

5 units · Glamping3 acres · Staffordshire, West Midlands
‘The Grange' B&B at Lower Loxley Staffordshire is just off the main A518 Stafford Road, 3 miles from the old market town Uttoxeter. Only 400 metres down a country lane is a very special place. Mary’s family have farmed here since the seventies and on her parents’ retirement, the modern agricultural buildings were taken down and the original brick buildings were converted into homes for the family. Mary and Mick moved here in 2006 and Mary with 20 years of experience of farmhouse bed and breakfast with Mick’s help set about the task to make ready for ‘pgs’- paying guests. The Grange BB opened it’s doors in 2007 with 3 bedrooms for guests and visiting family and has been an on-going project ever since. Mary and hubby Mick have devoted the following years to developing the 4 acres of grounds into a garden of which 3 acres is woodland. A ’pop-up’ glamping site was developed in 2015 and a local business held ‘hencamps’ in bell tents during the summer months. This was very successful and the demand for bigger groups soon outgrew what Mary and Mick offered here at The Grange. In 2021 (post lockdown)the idea of Grange Wood Glamping was sown. A small off-grid ‘pop-up’ glamping site - 'OWL CAMP' -for couples or alternatively a limited availability May-August for groups of family and friends, with sole use of the site with no minimum but a maximum occupancy of up to 14 people under canvas. With additional accommodation for 6/7 in the B&B rooms for those whom ‘off-grid glamping’ is really not their thing. With a mix of Glamping in luxury belle tents and bed and breakfast rooms, this is a great place to spend time with your family and friends for that extra special celebration or just a catch-up with your nearest and dearest. A perfect private space making it possible for friends and all of the family to gather together and meet up in one place. Contact the owners at The Grange to discuss your requirements. We are adaptable, approachable and happy to help. QUIET CAMP after 11pm Grangewood Glamping has 3 tents, sleeping up to 12, a gypsy caravan sleeping 1-2 available with a 2 metre cedar wood-fired hot tub and basic off grid facilities in the 'camp area' but has additional on-grid facilities in the main buildings (The Mess) The Mess - available from 7am - 11pm has: .a wash room with an electric shower, 2 flushing toilets and wash basin .kitchenette and dining area with, power points, kettles, microwave, fridge/freezer,foreman grill, slow cooker and electric 2 plate hob. River, stream, or creek campsites near Dolgellau with hot tub guide

Overview

Probably the best base for exploring Southern Snowdonia, Dolgellau (pronounced doll-geth-lie) is a handsome grey stone town bunched below the slopes of the region’s main mountain, Cadair Idris, in a labyrinth of twisting streets. It’s a Mecca for outdoors-lovers who come for the nearby hiking, with trails like the long-distance Cambrian Way and Cross-Britain Way passing by, as well as climbing, white-water rafting and horse-riding. Even the famously sandy Snowdonia coast is close enough to enjoy on a day out. Of the campsites near town, expect to find level, grassy pitches, plus glamping and caravan hookups.

Where to go

Cadair Idris

Cadair Idris, Southern Snowdonia’s highest peak, rears up above Dolgellau in a flurry of grassy moorland, rocky outcrops and lonesome tarns, and should be on any Dolgellau-bound adventurer’s radar for its superb hiking and wild swimming. A ravishing mountain road climbs west from town along the northern side of the mountain, where small farm campsites are scattered around the foothills’ pastureland. There’s also camping near Minffordd on the southern mountainside.

River Mawddach

An unexpected nirvana for campers, the Mawddach is prime pitching territory from the sandy-rimmed estuary at Barmouth all the way up past Dolgellau north to ruined mediaeval Cymer Abbey. Campsites can be found near the river mouth and along the water upriver. The Mawddach Trail and the wild Cambrian Way headline the hiking possibilities.

Barmouth & Around

The big beach town in Southern Snowdonia, Barmouth is a likeable place (a resort with a small “r”) and its pristine sandy shores stretch northwest in a near-unbroken line for about 15 kilometres. While hiking is never far away and hardcore long-distance hike the Cambrian Way trundles through, there is more emphasis here on beach activities like swimming, yachting and kayaking. Most campsites fan out northwest along the coast towards Tal-y-bont.

Dinas Mawddwy & Around

In the extreme, emerald-hued south of Snowdonia, the switch from jagged, dramatic mountainside down into lower, greener Mid Wales hills is astonishingly beautiful – and amenity-rich village Dinas Mawddwy looks out on the lovely scene. Hiking is excellent, with a little-tramped back route onto Cadair Idris from here, and there is lush camping between Dinas Mawddwy and Mallwyd.

When to go

Weather stays wilder and colder here for longer and you will feel the benefits of making camp between May and September when the warmer weather comes. July and August are the hottest months—but also the busier ones. July has the edge in Dolgellau for hosting renowned folksy world music festival Sesiwn Fawr. Rainstorms regularly sweep over the mountains into Dolgellau and surroundings, meaning even summer can be a washout.
