Cabins with hot tubs in Brecon

·

Moor and mountains, fields and mountains, following yonder stars…a paraphrase from a popular Christmas carol well describes Brecon's hilly surroundings on the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. From the moors around town burst distinctive fan-shaped mountains, including South Wales' highest peak, Pen y Fan, whilst skies are so clear of light pollution that they have Dark Sky Reserve status. Brecon is the national park’s undisputed outdoors capital and the main base for exploring the national park, with ample shops for stocking up on camping supplies. In this striking upland, campsites come in all forms—best of all on small, rural farm sites full of idiosyncrasies and serving as refreshing alternatives to bigger, blander caravan parks.

Spanning southeast from Brecon to Crickhowell and southwest to Ystradfellte, this is the national park’s most frequented zone, mainly due to the presence of Pen Y Fan and its surrounding summits. The whole area is a montage of lakes, bracken-coated hills, ridges, and photogenic valleys with waterfalls. It is perennially popular with hikers and bikers. Select from big caravan sites, smaller lakeside campsites, and farm campsites in the foothills.

East of the central band of Brecon Beacons National Park, a lattice of green valleys and scrubby hills hide Llangorse Lake, the largest natural lake in Mid or South Wales and great for activities from hiking to kayaking. Just beyond are the Black Mountains, a hiking favourite that rises up in an imposing frontier with England. A decent spread of campsites sits around Llangorse Lake and in the Vale of Ewyas, while a bothy (rudimentary shelter accessible by foot only) can be found in the Black Mountains.

This is the quietest part of the national park and furthest from Brecon, but the reward for venturing out here is that the hiking trails and beauty spots are much less crowded. This region’s Fforest Fawr is a UNESCO Geopark, whilst lakes like Llyn y Fan Fach are some of the prettiest you ever will see. Campsites here are mostly on small farms, with a quiet, non-touristy feel.

Oak Hill Escape, Powys, Mid-Wales

18. Oak Hill Escape, Powys, Mid-Wales

80km from Brecon · 1 unit
Oak Hill Escape opens in April 2026 and has been planned for years. Oak Lodge is an exclusive Luxury Glamping Lodge set on a beautiful, sheltered Mid Wales hillside and close to amenities. At the moment there is just the one quirky lodge set in 3 acres of meadow, looking out over the hills and woodland. There is more land to explore (total 11 acres) and the views are far reaching. This unique accommodation isn't available anywhere else in Wales. Oak Lodge is mains connected for electricity, with a top of the range waterless toilet and eco friendly Bio Fuel Burner (Like a log burner but without the hassle). The hills and trees will be your morning view as you open the curtains looking out across the green expanse that surrounds this Mid Wales getaway. You are surrounded by green space, meadows left for wild flowers with paths cut through them and of course the many Oak Trees, some of which are over 400 years old. As there is only one lodge, you will have privacy and this offers the perfect location for a romantic luxury break for a couple. Alternatively, kids will love exploring the areas and discover the very shallow stream to splash in (it dries up fully in Summer). There is so much space to enjoy. After a 3-4 minute, 300 metre walk from the car park (some up a hillside path), kick off your boots in the covered porch outside and head into your own quirky lodge. In the lodge there is one separate bedroom with a King Size bed, a shower room with toilet, sink, a kitchenette (mini kitchen) with microwave oven, air fryer, fridge/freezer and the spacious, quirky main room with a large sofa (converts to a 115cm wide bed for 1 older or possibly 2 smaller children). Cast Iron outdoor stove, in/outdoor tables and shower room. A private wood-fired hot tub with bubbles, which is deep and specially designed for two - the perfect addition to a romantic stay. Relax in warm water under the stars or start the day listening to the birdsong. Mid-Wales is a spectacular location and we are just 4 minutes drive away from the small town of Llanfair Caereinion (2nd smallest town in Wales). Usual convenience shops (Spa/Londis), petrol station, excellent butchers (Pandy's), hairdressers, 3 pubs, Chinese takeaway and Fish and Chip shop. Pets not allowed yet.

Little Sanctuary Cabins

19. Little Sanctuary Cabins

83km from Brecon · 2 units
Nestled amongst trees are two unique hand crafted eco cabins from reclaimed wood and local materials. Each characterful cabin has a wood burner and verandas, a spacious private garden with a fire pit and it's own parking. One cabin has an outdoor bath with another in progress. Relax, breathe and soak up the vibrant green of West Wales. Our property is 0.3 miles down a secluded track surrounded by a mixture of farmland and woods. We've a quiet private woodland behind us which connects to the public footpath and follows the stream in the valley. To the south there is an open meadow with far reaching views to the Preseli Hills. Follow the footpaths down to the Teifi river where you can walk or canoe along the river and gorge walk to Cilgerran and Cardigan, taking in wildlife and history. The cabins are 6 miles from the stunning beaches and rugged coastal path of Ceredigion, a wealth of Neolithic sites, ancient woodland and contemporary Welsh culture in bustling Cardigan. There's every comfort to make your stay a home from home; comfortable bedding, handmade and reclaimed furniture and a simple, well equipped kitchen. Highly insulated it's easy to heat with the wood burner. Outside there's your own private compost toilet and a gas powered shower. We work from home on various creative projects and therapies and after an initial meet and greet we leave our guests in peace unless you need something. We use regenerative principles to guide us in enhancing Nature here, encouraging wildlife with the trees, flowers, herbs and fruits. If we're able to we often give little tours of the garden and workshop so do ask if your'e interested.

Cabins with hot tubs in Brecon guide

When to go

Glamping spots are available in Brecon year-round, but the surrounding area sees itself running with full tourist facilities (which include most countryside campsites) from Easter to September. To maximise your chances of sunny (or at least rain-free days), late spring, summer, and early autumn are best. July and August are especially popular times in the central Brecon Beacons.

Know before you go

  • The closest train station is at Abergavenny, just southeast of the central Brecon Beacons. Buses connect Abergavenny with Brecon via Crickhowell.
  • Aside from Brecon, the best spots to buy camping supplies are in Crickhowell to the southeast and Abergavenny just beyond that.
  • It’s a 10-minute walk from central Brecon to the nearest camping site.
  • If trying wild camping in Wales, the Brecon Beacons National Park (including the eastern, central, and western Brecon Beacons) may be the place. Wild camping requires landowners’ consent, but park authorities here publish a list of landowners that permit it, making camp planning easier.
