The best campsites in Cardigan Bay with horseback riding

·

Wales’ largest bay straddles a huge swathe of the West Wales coast, rolling from North Pembrokeshire’s weather-beaten Strumble Head via Ceredigion north to the south of Snowdonia (Eyri) National Park, climaxing at the tip of the gorgeously green Llyn Peninsula and its AONB. It includes hidden coves, open sands, time-lost harbours, and one of Wales’ biggest, liveliest cultural centres, Aberystwyth. This is Europe’s best bottlenose dolphin-watching spot, and there are watersports to be found in Abersoch. Hiking is relentlessly fantastic, both on the Wales Coast Path and through the remote Cambrian Mountains ramparting the bay. The Llyn Peninsula and North Pembrokeshire’s smaller campsites make for particularly memorable pitching.

4. Mehefin Coed

1 unit · Glamping · Crymych, Wales
Hello and welcome to Llwyn Celyn’s “Mehefin Coed” and a little bit of paradise, we really don’t want to share. June and I (Laurence) Tree hope you enjoy your stay in our vintage motor home, parked up in a setting that invokes (we hope) the off road country lane hide away meets beach and secluded back garden feel. Llwyn Celyn – Like hundreds like it, is a small holding, a farm of some 12 acres, these days it is still farmed, though very quiet with only the sound of sheep from our family folk, and is set midst a small hamlet of ten other holdings. Llwyn Celyn’s “Mehefin Coed” is situated in the heart of Pembrokeshire’s National Park – The Preseli Mountain Range and birth place of Wiltshire’s “Stonehenge” and their blue stones, to which the quarries can be seen and walked to a few minutes away from Mehefin Coed. From our pictures, we hope, they give you a sense of relaxation and to forget the World outside away from our part of the UKs wonderful Pembrokeshire.

(6)
5 units · Tents · Llanbedrog, Wales
Our site is in the far northwest corner of Wales UK, on the wild coastal edge of the Llŷn Peninsula, or Penllŷn in Welsh. We are surrounded by sea and look across to the mountains of Eryri / Snowdonia. The camping area is part of our private property where we live and work, along with our dog. We are restoring our land to a wildflower meadow and other nature friendly habitat, but allowing use of one field for seasonal camping and occasionally larger gatherings. We are in an ideal spot for cyclists and walkers exploring the coast of Wales (we are a short diversion from the national coast path). Low carbon travellers are welcome, with Pwllheli train station about 5 miles away and we are also on the main Pwllheli to Aberdaron bus route. We can accommodate a limited number of vehicles including camper vans and smaller motor homes (please check size with us first to ensure your motorhome is not too wide for our track). The field is accessed by a good quality track which bypasses the house and garden and goes direct into the field. So we can accommodate cars, tents and camper vehicles, however larger vehicles may struggle with the initial access to our priority which is narrow, so please contact us first to check this out with us. There is an outdoor tap for water by the house and a composting ‘eco’ loo in the camping field. In the near future we will be installing a water supply in the camping area. We can also provide a bbq/ fire pit but ask that you source your own fuel. Exclusive whole site group bookings are possible. **new for 2024 : we have a family size bell tent and a large teepee available for hire, fully set up for you, with or without bedding. please send us an enquiry in advance** There is a wealth of wonderful footpaths, interesting landmarks and fantastic beaches in the nearby area. Local eggs and other produce can be bought locally too, and there is both a farm shop and village post office/general store. We can help you with finding what you need. We will be nearby at the house to offer assistance so we also ask that you are considerate and also respect our privacy, minimise noise, keep gates closed and access clear.

The best campsites in Cardigan Bay with horseback riding guide

Where to go

North Pembrokeshire Coast

Heading southeast from Cardigan through North Pembrokeshire, Cardigan Bay culminates at storm-tossed Strumble Head, having wound through Newport and Fishguard. Along the way are striking sights like Dinas Head (a headland cut off from the mainland by a stream), vast sandy beaches like Newport Sands, and the ruined Abbey of St Dogmaels. Newport has several facility-rich campsites—otherwise, sleep out near Strumble Head in a yurt rental.

Ceredigion Coast

Ceredigion boasts the lion’s share of Cardigan Bay—a stretch running from Cardigan to Aberaeron and Aberystwyth up to the Dyfi Estuary. The area is plastered in campsites, with the New Quay area and the coast north of Aberystwyth offering especially good choices. Great hiking can be found along the Wales Coast Path, which takes campers via comely harbours like New Quay with its bottlenose dolphin-watching trips, an abundance of idyllic sandy coves, and rolling dunes around the Dyfi Estuary.

Southern Snowdonia Coast & Llyn Peninsula

Cardigan Bay’s northern portion is flanked by Snowdonia National Park, where the sandy, castle-studded seaboard jostles for position with the jagged mountain peaks and emerald-green valleys behind. The shores then swerve west for 30 miles out onto the lower-lying Llyn Peninsula AONB. Many of North Wales’ best beaches hem this coast, and among many excellent pitching places, the dune-rimmed coast around Morfa Harlech and Morfa Dyffryn stands out.

Cambrian Mountains

Bare yellow-green hills scored by narrow wooded valleys loom inland above Cardigan Bay. Although never surpassing 2,475 feet, these are mighty wild places that cross by Wales’ toughest long-distance trail, the Cambrian Way. This, Britain’s remotest land south of the Scottish Highlands, is most easily accessed from Aberystwyth to the northwest. There are scarcely any campsites in the middle, so places like Aberystwyth, Tregaron, and Lampeter on the western periphery are your best options for camping bases.
