Weekend Trip to Howdy Glamping

I had a very nice stay at Tom and Andri's. They both said hello to me at different points and made me feel very welcomed. Andri told me a great place to walk my dog and Tom showed me some of the new facilities the place is getting. Lovely quiet stay.

You can expect a friendly host who goes the extra mile. Good communication and a friendly welcome. This is a simple, small campsite that is easy to find and is very quiet. I can recommend the free range ducks eggs - same day fresh.

Nothing but good things to say about Walkmill! Clean, well looked after, incredibly peaceful, and Claire was very helpful before and during our stay. Perfect for the first night of our trip in our van. Will definitely be back & would recommend to anyone. Thanks again!

1 night at The Old Chapel Campsite

Me and my fiancé had a lovely camp on Ted’s land. Fire pit and fuel were a good price. He sells eggs that he produces on his land for a good price too. There are plenty of hikes nearby in walking distance and this location makes for a great base camp. It’s easy distance to the lakes and other hikes nearby. Ted is very accommodating and let us use his toilet whenever we needed. He was kind of enough to give us a tour of his animals and let us bottle feed his orphan lambs. I would recommend this quiet spot to anyone and we will be returning.

Weekend Trip to The Old Chapel Campsite

Such a good experience! Ted is the absolute salt of the earth, he’s so helpful, accommodating and even let us feed 2 lambs in the morning. We camped in early April so it was still cold, but it meant we had the field to ourselves, apart from sharing with sheep and ducks which were all really sweet and just leave you be. You’ve got gorgeous surrounding views and walks, great for newbies at camping. Not as wild as the photos appeared but that didn’t bother us. We’ll definitely be coming back, just to see Ted again, if nothing else :-) x

Lovely campsite with excellent facilities. All very clean and in good condition. The hosts were very helpful and the little shop is stocked with some great stuff. Considering how remote the site is, it was very easy to find. The area it's in is great for peaceful walks.

An amazing stay, amazing location with an even better view! The pods were well equipped and the underfloor heating was amazing. I will definitely be returning. Perfect location for our hike up Blencathra.

Weekend Trip to Kestrel Lodge Campsite

Beautiful views. Super friendly hosts who were very welcoming. The shower and toilet facilities were clean throughout our stay. The land was tidy and well laid out. There is a shop with all supplies you may need to get with an honesty box for payment. Lovely quiet site. A good little pub a 20min walk away. Campfires provided for each pitch. Would definitely recommend and would love to go back!

It was fun but I wouldn’t use the fridge deffo worth £25 and it is well for the young ones experience the feeling of camping on there own with there friends.

Ended up staying in the bunkhouse as the weather wasn't great which was offered to us and ended up having a great night, the facilities were plenty and easy enough to use and the location was remote so we were able to have a peaceful evening.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the log cabin, from the great atmosphere to the welcoming and helpful people close by, it was one of nicest glamping experiences. The cabin was such a cozy experience along with the beautiful view right outside of your cabin. If you are looking for some time away to relax or for long walks or even a little boat around the stream Ottermoss is the place to go.

King Garth

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position. In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you. The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river. My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay. You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk! Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there. This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host. The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

Overview

Made up of seven forests dotted around the valley of the River Tweed, Tweed Valley Forest Park is Scotland’s most popular forested area and just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh. Glentress Forest is the park’s hub and known for its mountain bike routes, walking trails and exciting tree-top scramble. Cardrona is the perfect place for taking peaceful long-distance walks and cross-country horse rides. Caberston offers a climb to an Iron Age hill fort. Yair offers a Biodiversity Trail and river views, Traquair has the best downhill biking and the trails at Cademuir, and Thornielee lead you through wildlife-filled woodland and away from crowds.

Best for outdoor activities: Glentress Forest Lodges sits alongside the mountain bike trail centre at Glentress Forest.
Best for views: Rosetta Holiday Park is set on the grounds of a Georgian mansion with views of the Venlaw Hills.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Not all sites are open year-round. Check ahead of travelling.
Booking in advance is highly recommended during school summer holidays.
Most sites allow booking well in advance, so you can plan as soon as you know your travel dates.

When to go

April through September is the best time to visit the Tweed Valley Forest Park, but the height of the summer season does bring crowds and booked-up campsites. If planning to visit in the summer months, it’s a good idea to at least avoid school holidays and weekends—if unavoidable, be sure to book sites well in advance. Spring and summer is also the best time for viewing wildlife, including ospreys.

Having your own transport is essential for visiting, and getting around, Tweed Valley Forest Park.
Glentress Forest is home to visitor facilities, including a good cafe and the Wildlife Room where you can watch live feeds of ospreys and other wildlife.
