Camping in Hoy & Graemsay

Hoy, the High Island, offers a dramatically different landscape to the rest of the relatively low Orkney Islands. Visit the otherworldly Rackwick Bay, a favourite getaway of Orkney author George Mackay Brown. Hoy’s moorland, hills, valleys and coastal cliffs offer an ideal playground for Hipcampers who want to spend time exploring truly remote terrain. Be prepared for the weather and come well-stocked with food and water if planning an extended excursion. If arriving in late spring, you may get to witness Hoy’s two resident sea eagles raising a new set of chicks—a big event for bird lovers. On a sunny day, those in Stromness long for the invitingly empty golden beach just across the Clestrian Sound on Graemsay. Both islands are accessible via a passenger ferry from the Stromness Harbour.
