Nestled between the Western Lake District Fells and the Irish Sea coast this site is situated on a working dairy and sheep farm. Farm tours can be arranged on arrival. A play hut with outdoor games, drying room with communal fridge and freezer (some units have their own small fridge). Natural hedges surround the site. Four fruit trees near the shower block
Half a mile to Gosforth village with Bakery, Cafe, 4 Pubs providing food and an Italian restaurant. Gosforth and Seascale villages have play parks.
Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, Wasdale, Scafell Pike and Sandy Beaches with Cafes selling local ice cream are nearby with most Lake District attractions within an hours drive and Edinburgh a three hour drive away.
There are 5 campervan/motorhome pitches, a modern take on a shepherds hut with underfloor heating, a heated pod and two gypsy caravans with electricity to book. All pitches are on gravel positioned to enjoy views over farmland to Scafell Pike and other fells, they are surrounded by grassy areas with seating and a picnic table. A wooden play hut has outdoor games and toys inside. Awnings can be added on the 3 larger pitches. Tents can be pitched next to units for extra Barbeques are allowed on gravel with our Gypsy Caravans having a campfire There is a communal fridge freezer. Farm tours can be arranged. Wildlife and farm animals can be seen in the surrounding fields. Grocery deliveries accepted from supermarkets. There is also a holiday cottage on the farm sleeping 6 over two rooms.
Situated midway between the Western Lake District Fells and the Irish Sea Coast makes this site ideal for lower or higher level walks. Sandy beaches at Seascale and St Bees have cafes selling locally made ice cream alongside play areas to keep children happy. Scafell England's highest mountain is close by as are a number of Wainwrights.
Nearby is Muncaster Castle and Gardens with its Hawk and Owl Centre, also Ravenglass, a Roman port. You can ride up the Eskdale Valley on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Perhaps take a stroll to Stanley Ghyll waterfall. There are cafes at both terminuses with a museum in Ravenglass where nearby you can sample Ravenglass Ice Cream. Wasdale and Ennerdale are close by both valleys having cafes and pubs.

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon
I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position.
In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you.
The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river.
My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay.
You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk!
Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there.
This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host.
The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back to basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see. This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still are a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed.

We loved our stay in Tan Pod over the weekend. It was cosy and had exactly what we needed for a comfortable stay. The shower had great water pressure and was nice and hot. The amenities were ample and the bed was really comfy. The view was gorgeous and a joy to wake up to. The grounds and surroundings are beautiful. Perfectly situated between Keswick and Penrith with a delicious farm shop 10mins drive away. We would stay here again.

The campsite was breathtaking, peaceful, and had little noise, though it was next to a working farm where work starts after 10:00 a.m. and stops before 6:00 p.m.
It was a relaxing experience with wonderful staff, and the toilets and showers were clean; it is one of the better showers I have been to. I will definitely be going back with other freinds!

Loved our trip. We booked site 2 with compost loo and shower. We were unlucky with the weather after 3 months of heat waves and no rain got every day raining but even with that loved it. Everything was easy and felt really relaxed. Also loved the sauna. Will be back for sure.

Perfect in so many ways but a little maintenance needed. We pretty much had the site to ourselves, beautiful area, the host was the friendliest host I've had so far. For the price I can not complain. It is a working farm so be prepared for the smell of manure but that did not bother us. Great toilet facilities but require maintenance. But we were happy wanted to stay longer . And will definitely be returning . Preferably in the pod as we stay in the gypsy wagon, nice but the pods looked more welcoming. Thank you for your hospitality

I stayed in Rosella one of the two Gypsy caravans at Thornbank farm. It was just me and my two dogs and it was just right size wise for one person and two dogs but would also be fine for two people. There’s a comfy double bed to sleep in and seating at one side of the van. The van comes equipped with toaster kettle mini fridge and air fryer. It was tricky to keep my dogs contained overnight but one of them is a jack Russell and he wanted to be out hunting farm cats! As long as you have a good sturdy line to attach excitable pets to it’s all fine (from previous camping trips I had brought one anyway). The views and setting are beautiful. The location is in close vicinity to Seascale, St Bees, Whitehaven coast towns / beaches. Food wise you can manage for some meals self catering but there’s a local pub the Lion and Lamb I ordered a fish and chip tea from - delivered to the farm - it was lovely. The owner Cathryn was warm and welcoming and helpful too. Me and the dogs will definitely be back one day. Highly recommend.

This was a very peaceful camping experience with spectacular views. The camp site is well kept and the toilets are clean. The farm tour is great for children as they get to see some of the animals and is also a great learning experience. Cathryn is a wonderful host and was very welcoming.

My partner and I had a fantastic time here, plenty of space on the plots, we had friends stay in the one opposite with their van, very ideal. Amazing views from the site but if you enjoy hiking there’s even more to be seen, toilets/showers kept clean and toilet roll never ran out you won’t need to bring your own if that’s a worry, fire pit on the plots are a lovely touch, perfect being able to get the £6 bags of fire wood on site, cash or card! Great signal on camp too as there’s 5G masts close by, for those that care! Bats at night to watch and a peaceful stream to fall asleep to. Gareth can’t be topped, he’s an amazing addition to the campsite, thank you🙏🏼

Very good campsite in a lovely location. We went when it was probably at it's busiest, during the school holidays, yet it was still comfortable. The facilities are really good. The shower/toilet/washing block is clean and well maintained.
We would definitely stay again but probably when it's less busy as it was hectic at times.
That's no complaint towards the site though, they do a great job and the heavy horses there are spectacular to see.
