Our three, brand new wood and canvas yurts are nestled in our private, woodland hotel garden beside the beautiful conservation (SSSI) river of Scandal Beck. Just a short drive from The Lake District, The Yorkshire and Durham Dales as well as The Scottish Border, we are perfectly located for you to explore.
The yurts themselves are individually decorated with full size furniture, electricity and double beds. The yurts are all located in the garden of The Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale, a multi award-winning hotel, restaurant and bar; recipient of 2 AA Rosettes as well as AA pub of the year for England 2018/19. As part of your stay in our yurts you will receive a full cooked breakfast and buffet option included in the price for 2 people in our hotel restaurant. We like to think of ourselves as a cosy home from home with a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout. We are very dog friendly in the hotel, restaurant, bar and yurts so please bring your furry family members.
Our beautiful woodland is also home to red squirrels (which are seen daily), protected, freshwater crayfish in the river, an otter (seen very infrequently but the nemesis of our ducks), 6 Indian runner ducks, free range chickens and our two cockerels! (Dogs are very welcome but are to be kept on a lead whilst in the woodland itself).
We are very dog friendly and charge an additional fee of £15 for 1 dog/ £20 for 2 dogs for an additional cleaning fee and for some dog friendly goodies such as poop bags and treats. The price of this yurt is based on an occupancy of 2 people. Any other people who will be staying on the sofa bed will add a charge of £40 per person per night for breakfast and their stay.
All yurts come with electrical battery pack, chargeable lanterns, tea/coffee, homemade biscuits, log burning stoves, towels, full breakfast included from the hotel, an outdoor seating area and access to our outdoor toasty warm woodland shower as well as our very cute, wooden toilet cabin. Hairdryers are available in the hotel for your use.

Ted was a kind, friendly host and the campsite was wonderful. Only issue was having just one toilet but it’s not really a big deal as we’re used to wild camping, just one more would be great though. Absolutely beautiful scenery, a nice quiet site with a stunning view. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely visit again :)

We had the most amazing 3 nights staying at Ted's campsite! The views were incredible, we went to bed and woke up every morning surrounded by fells. We rented a fire pit from Ted which was great and kept us warm into the evening. We walked to a lovely pub Dufton and did some lovely walks right from our tent. Meeting Ted was by far the highlight of our trip. He was so helpful and generous. We hitchhiked from Newcastle so were without a car and Ted offered us a lift around the area many times! He even took us to a chocolate factory - his generosity and kindness was so wonderful and greatly appreciated! If you want a camp that makes you feel like you are wilding camping with amazing views and an even more amazing host then this is the place! Thanks Ted you make our trip :)

Great spot and starting point for walks up Murton Pike and High Cup Nick. Nice little site, portaloo and tap as described and Ted is a fine fellow. Fresh eggs and he also let us stay in our campervans so worth asking if it’s been dry enough. Would stay again

Weekend Trip to Cherish Glamping
Amazing 3 nights in the yurt. So cozy and snug with the woodburner going but also lots of space with the bed, tea, coffee and breakfast bits, the table and sofa. Breakfast was delicious and the whole vibe of the place was really friendly and welcoming. Loved stargazing from the hot tub. Walked to Askrigg Waterfall one day (plus food from the lovely bakery in Askrigg village) and visited the Creamery in Hawes on another day. Beautiful part of Yorkshire!! Thanks for having us

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Teds campsite last night and have to say it was 10/10. Ted welcomed us at the gate, rented us a fire pit and wood with some matches for next to nothing. Had plenty of recommendations for breakfast and the abundance of pubs in villages surrounding. Lots of nice hiking trails around. We visited high force waterfall in the morning after we’d left after taking home all the farm fresh eggs ted had to offer. The night previous we’d had a lovely meal at one of the pubs in appleby and had a toasty from in the bakery in the morning which we delicious! Such a nice first njght away for me and my boyfriend made extra special by the lovely ted a perfect host in giving you your privacy but also a perfect helping hand !

My girlfriend and I decided to go camping completely last minute in our TentBox, so there weren’t many places left, but honestly, stumbling across Ted’s campsite felt like a win. It’s very back to basics, which was exactly what we wanted. No noise, no crowds, just a quiet spot tucked away from everything. The road nearby is private and barely used, so the only cars we saw were locals or farmers passing through.
The field is surrounded by sheep, chickens, geese and all sorts of wildlife. We even spotted lambs, rabbits and pheasants wandering around like they owned the place. At night, the little stream running along the edge of the field was ridiculously calming.
Ted himself is genuinely lovely :) you can tell he really cares about the people who stay there. He also sells fresh eggs, which we obviously bought, and they were great.
It was so quiet that we actually debated whether we should even bother going for a walk or just sit there and enjoy doing nothing. In the end we walked up Murton Pike (1 hour each way). On the path only was us and the sheep, and the view from the top was completely worth it.
For a last minute choice, we couldn’t believe how perfect it turned out. Proper peaceful, simple, and exactly what we needed.

Loved our stay at Walkmill!
A clean, friendly, well-spaced site with all the amenities needed.
We stayed on a tent plot, and despite a last-minute change of plan (adding another night to our stay) we were welcomed with no fuss.
Well situated near Warkworth, we walked to both Warkworth and down to nearby farm brewery Rigg and Furrow on each night for our stay, which gave us loads to do, and the scenery was beautiful.
I’d recommend Walkmill to anyone looking for a comfortable stay in beautiful Northumberland.

When to go
Summer is the most popular time to visit Hamsterley Forest, but it can get busy. Set out early to snag a parking spot and get a jump on the crowds. Outdoor activities are possible year-round, and it’s worth revisiting to make the most of each season. Come in spring to stroll through the bluebell woods, in fall to admire the changing leaves, or in winter for crisp walks through the snow.
Know before you go
- Haldon Forest is located on the eastern edge of the North Pennines AONB, about a 30-minute drive from Durham.
- You will need your own transport, as there are no public transport links to the park. Paid parking is available.
- There are restrooms and a café in the park.
- Some of the park’s trails are wheelchair accessible.
