Nestled into the Teesdale countryside, get back to nature in the luxury of a cosy Shepherd’s Hut. Whether you’re looking to unwind, explore, or both, Toadlands is a special place to do it. The space
We have two Shepherd Huts totally private from each other with separate access .The huts are supplied with Luxury linens, cotton towels and bathrobes. Fully equipped bijou kitchen, induction hob, ceramic sink, microwave, fridge with ice compartment. Generous bathroom with spacious electric shower & heated towel rail. Luxurious Hypnos bed and mattress with plenty of storage. The hut offers a cosy interior with walls finished in dark blue tongue and groove paneling, an oak floor and contrasting white ceiling. Sumptuous Linwood fabrics have been used throughout on the windows and furniture. Double glazed hardwood doors and windows combined with electric thermostatically controlled heating ensure consistent comfort throughout the changing seasons. Outdoors, relax in the wood fired hot tub or sit around the fire pit sipping wine or enjoying mugs of hot chocolate whilst enjoying the wonderful views of the Teesdale countryside. we are a stone throw away from the railway walk that can take you to the neighbouring villages of Romaldkirk, or Middleton- in-Teesdale, or hop in the car and take a short drive to the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle.

Cars can be parked approx 100 metres from the hut, access is from the B6277 along a private grass lane, waterproof footwear is recommended for pedestrian access during wet weather.

Our three, brand new wood and canvas yurts are nestled in our private, woodland hotel garden beside the beautiful conservation (SSSI) river of Scandal Beck. Just a short drive from The Lake District, The Yorkshire and Durham Dales as well as The Scottish Border, we are perfectly located for you to explore.
The yurts themselves are individually decorated with full size furniture, electricity and double beds. The yurts are all located in the garden of The Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale, a multi award-winning hotel, restaurant and bar; recipient of 2 AA Rosettes as well as AA pub of the year for England 2018/19. As part of your stay in our yurts you will receive a full cooked breakfast and buffet option included in the price for 2 people in our hotel restaurant. We like to think of ourselves as a cosy home from home with a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout. We are very dog friendly in the hotel, restaurant, bar and yurts so please bring your furry family members.
Our beautiful woodland is also home to red squirrels (which are seen daily), protected, freshwater crayfish in the river, an otter (seen very infrequently but the nemesis of our ducks), 6 Indian runner ducks, free range chickens and our two cockerels! (Dogs are very welcome but are to be kept on a lead whilst in the woodland itself).
We are very dog friendly and charge an additional fee of £15 for 1 dog/ £20 for 2 dogs for an additional cleaning fee and for some dog friendly goodies such as poop bags and treats. The price of this yurt is based on an occupancy of 2 people. Any other people who will be staying on the sofa bed will add a charge of £40 per person per night for breakfast and their stay.
All yurts come with electrical battery pack, chargeable lanterns, tea/coffee, homemade biscuits, log burning stoves, towels, full breakfast included from the hotel, an outdoor seating area and access to our outdoor toasty warm woodland shower as well as our very cute, wooden toilet cabin. Hairdryers are available in the hotel for your use.

The one and only Mosedale Glamping Pod is tucked in the corner of the farmyard next to the garden & stream. This gives guests the unique experience of staying in the heart of a Farm, with wonderful views of the lambing fields & hay meadows. The veranda is the perfect place to sit and watch Farm life in a quieter corner of the Lake District.
The Mosedale Glamping Pod sleeps 2 adults in a made-up double bed. Shower en-suite with towels, mini kitchen for basic food prep, with fridge, underfloor heating, wi-fi, smart TV and of course the stunning double-ended luxurious Bath.
Several local country pubs, the closest only 2 miles away – an easy 30-minute road walk.
Fabolous dark sky for star gazing and if you are lucky, the Northern Lights.
Walk Wainwrights from the farm gate such as Carrock, High Pike, Calva & Back ‘O’ Skiddaw or Bowscale, Mungrisdale Common and Blencathra.
Bowscale Tarn is only a 40-minute walk, the perfect location for wild swimming and picnics, and Lake Ullswater is a 20-minute picturesque drive. The tourist hotspot town of Keswick is only 14 miles away.

Initially I wasn’t sure taking the lantern to do your (compost) toilet trip of 1.5 minutes but it worked as long as your mind doesn’t run wild in the dark when you’re on your own! But it all adds up to the whole experience of glamping without running water and electricity in the yurt. I loved the hot shower outside (I also used it to wash my hands after using the toilet), the sound of the stream, the hares who were very elusive, the log burner and the pub breakfast (included in the booking) and the pub food. I had to leave very early, it was still pitch black and I looked at the sky, it was magical with the stars and I even thought I could see 1-2 galaxies; I’m probably exaggerating but it was that clear without the light pollution. I loved the whole experience! Thank you!

We had a wonderful little getaway here, exactly what we needed nice and quiet and surrounded by nature, the pod was clean and cosy and provided everything you need for a stay. The bbq was really nice and worked well. Can was really wonderful and helpful especially with a little mishap we had. 10/10 I would recommend going here and we will definitely be back!

Weekend Trip to Hadrian's Wall Country Yurts
Caroline was fantastic! She made the check-in and check out so easy and ensured our comfort throughout, and the yurt and its facilities were perfect! This place is a gem!
External cooking facilities were great, as was the wood fired hot tub!....perfect for a just needed getaway!
Would certainly stay here again and again!...the yurts décor and cleanliness was exceptional.
Top tip...order the pizza oven...its really worth it.

What a delightful little find. Absolutely lovely little hut in total isolation. Everything you need to get away from it all. Perfect evening sitting outside by the fire listening to the countryside. But equally great tucked up inside with the log burner on listening to the pouring rain.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, surrounded by beautiful countryside then this place is for you. Great location. Great communication - Ruth came to see us when we contactedher about the WIFI. Use of private bathroom and shower. Only thing for us is that those facilities were across a farm yard and the cabin didn't have its own supply. The bed was comfy and the cabin stayed at a good temperature (even when it was cold outside). Fire pit available. Would recommend

My 2nd time coming here and it didn't disappoint, I didn't want to leave. The pod are beautiful and cosy, exceptionally clean and well looked after. The pods are situation slightly upground which gives them a spectacular view Its so peaceful if you want time to unwind and I really enjoyed the company of the two chickens and the three ducks that visit. Also I love the log bundles that you can buy for the fire pit as it makes starting a fire so easy. Carole and Howard are so friendly and hospitable. Would definitely recommend.

Great directions from the host to this site. Well located with beautiful views towards Malham Cove and handy that there is a farm shop with cafe on site - great breakfast baps! Spotlessly clean and well-equipped glamping pods (4) with outside picnic tables and fire pit/BBQ. Comfortable bed and sofa. All added up to an excellent, relaxing stay.

Absolutely beautiful site, friendly people around us and the onsite pub food was amazing for one of the nights we visited (pie and gammon are 100% recommend). It was a quick drive from most places we had a day in barnard castle, and this is very pretty. Our dog loved his stay too everywhere we went was dog friendly, with plenty of dog walking spaces for him to run around. Our pod for 4 was very comfortable and picnic bench outside was ideal for breakfast cereal, bring your own cups bowls cutlery and plenty to keep kids busy we took board games and quizzes and he could watch YouTube on his phone. Glad there was a mini fridge kettle (for cuppas) and microwave (for popcorn) we left alcohol outside as it was cold enough overnight. I loved bird spotting on their fields too we will definitely book for the summer time

When to go
Summer is the most popular time to visit Hamsterley Forest, but it can get busy. Set out early to snag a parking spot and get a jump on the crowds. Outdoor activities are possible year-round, and it’s worth revisiting to make the most of each season. Come in spring to stroll through the bluebell woods, in fall to admire the changing leaves, or in winter for crisp walks through the snow.
Know before you go
- Haldon Forest is located on the eastern edge of the North Pennines AONB, about a 30-minute drive from Durham.
- You will need your own transport, as there are no public transport links to the park. Paid parking is available.
- There are restrooms and a café in the park.
- Some of the park’s trails are wheelchair accessible.
