Meandering country lanes and vine-clad hills stretch north of Beaune along Burgundy’s famous “Route des Grands Cru” wine trail. Follow the UNESCO-listed trail between ancient wine cellars and boutique wineries, stopping to sample wines from the Côte d’Or, Côte de Beaune, and Côte de Nuit appellations, and visit the markets and foodie hotspots of regional capital Dijon.
West of Beaune, the vast farmlands and wooded hills of the Morvan Natural Regional Park afford plenty of ways to get back to nature, whether hiking, mountain biking, or horse riding along miles of hilly trails or camping in the heart of the woods. The Cure and Chalaux rivers run through the park providing ample terrain for canoeing, fishing, and boating, as well as whitewater rafting.
Over an hour’s drive north of Beaune, the Forêts National Park stretches north of Dijon into the Haute-Marne department. Ranking among the largest protected natural areas in Europe, this sprawling wilderness has more than 200 kilometres of hiking trails, 1,000 kilometres of mountain biking trails, and 600 kilometres of rivers to explore. Bring your binoculars, as it’s also brimming with wildlife, including rare black storks.
Beaune fills up with wine lovers each summer, so expect crowds, especially through July and August. In-the-know campers time their trip for early fall instead, when events and festivals are held around Burgundy to celebrate the harvest season. Beaune’s top event is the Wine Auction in November. As in the rest of France, the main camping season is April through October, but there are always a few campgrounds and Hipcamps that welcome campers year-round.
